Hacktoberfest Megathread - Share your projects!

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 06:57 AM PDT

If you aren't familiar with Hacktoberfest, it is a one-month event, presented this year by Digital Ocean, Intel, and Dev.to. The goal is to submit 4 high quality and useful PRs during this time, supporting open source, and get a limited edition T-shirt, or plant a tree in return!

    https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/

For the latest news about Hacktoberfest, rules, and an FAQ, check out the Hacktoberfest website:

If you are intimidated by contributing to open source, don't be! Check out these resources:

Please don't take this opportunity to submit low quality PRs, as it's against the spirit of Open Source, as we've seen from past experience.

This mega-thread will serve as a resource throughout October, showcasing repos from members in our community.

Comment below with your projects that have open issues, are accepting PRs, and welcome first-time contributors!

    Static resources and Git

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 09:31 AM PDT

We have projects with large resource-folder(s) with a ton of images in it. Logically they are not included in the repository. When we we're using CMS systems which we're using most of the time the image paths/ids/whatever are saved in the database. When a colleague clones a project to work on it locally, he takes newest sql-dump from a folder included in the repo. For the images he has to copy the resources-folder from the remote server (internal test server).

This no prob for the most of us but in the last time there are more and more colleagues complaining and wondering if there may be a better solution like a dispatcher for both DB and resources-folder. How do you guys handle this kind of problem? It's absolutely no solution to add the (huge) ressources into the repo. For the DB, yes, we did this already and I think for this purpose it's ok. This would be also interesting in terms of CI/CD (multiple staging systems dev/test/staging/prod)...

Not sure what sub to use - facebook has cached an older version of my page and I can't get it to update. On mobile, their browser will only serve the old version.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 07:30 AM PDT

I've used the sharing debugger, and when the post is shared the correct image/title/etc comes up, but when a user clicks in, they're still served the cached version from about 16 hours ago.

I've cleared all FB apps on my device to confirm it's not just me, is there anything else I can do here? Trying to get this updated so that a partner can share to their audience.

Iframe - scrolling to top of parent page

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have an application (Tadabase.io) that's embedded into a SquareSpace site via iframe. The application is on a sub domain of the squarespace site (app.domain.com)

When users are navigated through the embedded app, I need a way to scroll the parent page back to the top when a new app page is loaded.

I've tried some onload="" stuff from stack exchange but nothing is working.

    Can anybody help me out?

Dedicated server vs managed database: is extra price is worth it?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:38 PM PDT

For $50/mo I can get 8 Tb + 32 gb ram + 6 core server. Whereas, Amazon RDS the cheapest option I could find are like $50 for 300 mb.

I get automatic backups, security patches, ... but I've found Postgres is pretty reliable and stable.

For my semi-commercial products why should I spend $500 when I can get all of it for $50.

How much more knowledge do I need, I rather master linux and postgres than pay $500/mo, would probably help me in my career.

So what are some benefits of managed databases?

Is running your own dedicated servers really all that difficult?

    EDIT: * title

How would you build a landing page in 2020 (+ with a blog)?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hey,

so, my Django + React skills are quite good. For my current project, I have to build a landing page that is a completely different service from the main app, though. I also need my landing page to do well on SEO (so no dynamically rendered React)!

I had a go just writing out everything in plain HTML CSS, but it's really tedious and will take a couple of days to get right. I thought that there has to be an easier way to do a landing page. How would you build a landing page?

It would be awsome if the landing page would also have a blog.

    Cheers!

    Webapp instant messaging.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:29 PM PDT

I am currently in the process making an instant messaging webapp and was looking for guidance on where to start and what tools I should be researching and using. I have a logg-in and registration page already connect to a Microsoft Azure Mysql database. I want to have the chat work similar to low end kik. I also looked into socket io but still a little confused. This is my first time working on a webapp fully. I hope to get some guidance. Thank You.

Is it worth creating websites/web apps to sell? Any experiences?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 12:00 PM PDT

Long story short, I am a web developer from Europe and since I don't really want to freelance, I was thinking about creating web apps to sell (I mostly work with Angular, Laravel).

E.g I buy a domain, create a "productivity tool" platform, host it on a shared hosting and put it on flippa for 400-500$. It is just an example but I hope you get it.

Since the salary is not high in my country, 800-1000$ would be really good money a month (if I make 2 successful sites a month).

Do you guys think it would work? I've used Flippa.com before but only for domain selling, but nobody bought it so I am still a newbie in this.

What I don't know is how the "shipping" works, I just give the buyer the credentials of the hosting and the source code? Should I provide documentation so they can maintain the site, or will they expect me to do it?

Any opinion and advice is welcome! Have a wonderful day

Where do freelancers from r/webdev hangout

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 01:26 PM PDT

I was wondering what is the best place to look at when you want to hire freelance dev talent. Ideally looking for a full stack developers .

Were given some options like toptal where apparently the top 3% of freelance talent hangout which seems like marketing talk for we charge top dollars, which is ok but I am not looking to build the next Google or Facebook.

Then you have Upwork/99 designs/ etc where apparently the bottom 33% hangout (pulled that number out of thin air) I have had some good and bad experiences there.

Which brings me to the question at hand where do the rest of you 64% hangout

something better than a bunch of nested fetches?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 01:21 PM PDT

i have some code that is basically something like this:

fetch then( fetch() then( fetch() then( fetch() ) ) )

basically a bunch of nested fetches to an API, using data from the previous fetch in some way. is there a more "best practicesy" way to do something like this?

What are the best ways to send mobile notifications without a cellphone app?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 04:40 PM PDT

I am building a webapp part of which includes the ability for users to configure how they would like to be reminded of events. There is no iPhone or Android app, but I would like a way to provide mobile notifications.

Currently I have email and browser notifications (plus add to calendar via iCal). I am looking into building a Whatsapp connector so that people can get mobile notifications via a whatsapp message.

What other (popular) applications could I connect to that I could send a message which would result in a mobile notification for that app? My target demographic is the US and Europe. I was also thinking about IFTTT, but there seems to be a lot of negativity about them recently and I'm unclear if I would need to pay to allow people to get IFTTT notifications of events from my webapp.

I can't handle how slow my companies WooCommerce site is... any suggestions?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 07:21 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I've been dealing with my companies WooCommerce B2B site for about 6 months now and it's embarrassingly slow and I have no idea why!

I've tried seemingly everything, from using Cloudflare to connecting a CDN, and am not sure where to go from here.

Any suggestions? I've also tried disabling tons of plugins and all that...

What separates a senior developer from a junior developer? I am in loop of doing same things for different projects. What should I learn/know to feel like a senior developer?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 07:14 AM PDT

So i've been developing internal web applications for company employees to use, and I cannot go forward doing than crud, importing/exporting csv files, manipulating some data, implementing ldap login. feels like this is all. what i actually need to know more to deserve senior salary? (i've done stuff with laravel, django and vue)

Trying to update to the latest WebStorm version on Windows-10 I got this error:

    Missing essential plugin: JavaScript

    Please reinstall WebStorm from scratch.

So I did. Presumably I lost all my configuration data. But now trying to start it again I get the same error again. Clicking OK exits.

Should I learn backend or frontend to get a job?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Considering I am self taught. I have heard that in colleges they mainly teach backend so it would be difficult to be better than them so lower chances of getting the job. Is that true?

Can anyone recommend resources that are text based or courses with supporting texts?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Hello! I'm starting to learn about web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) and have done a course on Lynda.com, but I struggle to understand and retain information in a video or audio format. I've had friends recommend courses on Udemy and EdX, but I'm really struggling with focusing because the courses were mostly video based.

Can anyone recommend courses or resources that are mostly text based? Having video supporting materials are fine, but I am able to understand much better when I can take my time reading the information first.

    Creating a live streaming platform

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 01:47 PM PDT

So i want to create a platform to host a live stream, let's say a football match per example. It's dedicated for a large audience. I'm thinking of a combination between azure media and a web application hosted in azure. Is that a good idea?

    Help with flexbox wrap

    Help with flexbox wrap

Hello and thanks for all your help,

I'm designing a SPA using blazor and I have foreach loop generating cards in the picture, inside a flexbox container with wrap. The biggest constrain is that the user can choose how many columns can the card be. How can I get the small card go under the first small card?

Edit: If there is a need I can provide the generated code.
