    Geo APIs

I'm working on a geographic project and was wondering if there was an API that could give me city, district/county, and state based on a zipcode. I know Google has a Geocode but it seems to only work for city and state. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

What decides/determines the layout of the virtual memory address space of a process?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 08:02 AM PDT

What decides/determines the layout of the virtual memory address space of a process: program code, data, stack, shared library, heap, ...? For example, this figure.

Is it the OS, ISA, assembly language, compiler (from C to assembly), assembler (from assembly to ISA), or something else? I have seen descriptions of this topic in both assembly language and OS.

    • I first saw the description in OS books, and I thought OS decides the layout of the address space of a process.

    • Then, I saw the description in assembly languages, where we have to be sure about how stack frames are arranged in memory. Since assembly language exists not depending on OS, I guess ISA decides the layout of the address space of a process?

    Thanks.

Is the storage ordering between the elements of an array called endianness?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 10:25 AM PDT

In Computer Systems: a Programmer's Perspective, there is an example showing that in function echo(), a local char array buf of 8 elements fits exactly into a memory address.

Is it correct that a page is the smallest addressable unit in virtual memory?

Is the size of a page here 8 bytes?

What is the storage ordering between the elements of an array (not necessarily a char array) called? Is it byte ordering (i.e. endianness)? (Note the char array here has exactly 8 bytes and fit into a smallest addressable unit, so all the elements share the same memory address, and their storage ordering isn't in terms of increasing order of memory address, so I guess it is like endianness. But if an array need more than one the smallest addressable units and each element is larger than 8 bytes, then I guess it might not be suitable to call the storage ordering between the elements "endianness"?)

    Thanks.
