Feedback Friday #413 - Bold Ideas Posted: 08 Oct 2020 08:39 PM PDT FEEDBACK FRIDAY #413 Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved! Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback! Feedback Friday Rules: Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game. -Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo -Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos! -Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback! -Upvote those who provide good feedback! -Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them. Previous Weeks: All Testing services: Roast My Game (Web and Computer Games, feedback from developers and players) iBetaTest (iOS) Promotional services: Alpha Beta Gamer (All platforms) [link] [comments]

Nigerian Wannabe Developer Copying My Game, What To Do? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:31 PM PDT I've been working on a game for almost 4 years now. It's going to be published on all major consoles and desktop next year. About 7 months ago, a nigerian "developer" (he was just starting) messaged me and wanted to chat. Over time, he started to ask more an more questions. Also intimate questions, like sales, download counts and more. He was also asking me a lot about my mechanics and programming and kept me "updated" about his game. He also stated to me that his goal is to make money. It seemed very fishy from the start to me. I suspected from the beginning that his intention was to copy my game, but now I know it is, and he is not even trying to hide it. The copying applies to art, gameplay mechanics, even ideas for tweet and reddit post headings. I've told him multiple times to stop copying me; he always told me he would; but he never stopped. I finally blocked him then. It's very obvious that his game is a very low-quality rip-off of my game and I don't worry about competition in that regard, especially considering he's copying everything; but still. What should I do about it? Do I have copyright to these components I named above? Am I able to intervene legally? [link] [comments]

Getting out of Tutorial hell. Suggestions? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 11:13 AM PDT Tldr: I'm an experienced and educated game developer but have lost all my confidence and just watch and copy tutorials. Confession time. I have a B.S. in Game Design and have somehow relapsed back into tutorial hell. I used to be able to stand on my own two feet when surrounded by peers that I could rubber duck and bounce ideas off of but I haven't been in a team environment for a year now and have slowly devolved. My confidence has dipped and I am always second guessing myself. Sometimes I'll come up with a great idea when I'm away from my computer and I'll think through all the logic of how to implement a mechanic or system but when I open Unity and Visual Studio I shut down. I'll write a few lines of code but then stop and think "I'm not doing this right" or I'll run into errors and lose all my confidence and shut down, a problem which never used to bother me since I enjoy debugging. A lot of times I'll write something that works but then wonder if theres more efficient or optimized ways to do it and come to the conclusion that my code is crap and worthless even though it runs fine. I spend so much time watching Brackeys, Code Monkey and Jason Weimann because it feels safe when I feel like I should be pioneering my own path. I've relapsed into tutorial hell and idk how to break back out of it. I'm an experienced and educated developer. I've been making games for about 3 years, have done game jams, worked on solo projects and team projects, studied game design and development in college, and have made a decent amount of games without the help of tutorials. I'm devolving as a game developer and it's super frustrating. Has anybody else fallen into this pitfall? How do you claw your way out of tutorial hell... again? [link] [comments]

Participating in a free virtual expo for us devs? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 04:08 AM PDT Hey all, In almost every single exhibitions as devs we have to pay for participating. This is not an inclusive experience because many can not afford that. So I was thinking of creating an exhibition for all of us who live in countries where the institutional framework does not help us at all. Create an exhibition with 0 costs for devs and play demos on spot? I would love to have your feedback and have a discussion should you want to participate 🙏🏼🙄 [link] [comments]

Tips / tools / resources for dramatic camera cinematography? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 11:38 AM PDT I'm making an isometric tactical RPG, and I'd like to open battles with some dramatic camerawork -- instead of just starting from the isometric view, maybe pan along a row of enemies, maybe rotate around some, and generally get a more dramatic view of the area. Might even try to do some during characters' actions to up the drama there. However, I've found it really hard to make these look particularly good using a regular spline-based camera controller. It's a lot of manual effort to compose and the look/feel just isn't that great. I tried writing some scripts to pan and zoom between spaces and views, and same -- it just isn't feeling like professional cinematography. At worst it feels jerky, at best the framing just feels poor or it's kind of boring. Does anyone know of any kind of resources for this, whether better tools or just reliable game cinematography techniques? Maybe favorite games that do this well? This is in Unity (re: tools), though I'm eager to learn from other systems as well. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Oct 2020 11:33 AM PDT Hi all - We've been working on a new human model (going for a stylized look), but I feel like there's something off about the face. Maybe it's the shading (ignore the eyelashes, theses are just placeholders). Wondering if you can provide some feedback. Link to model image [link] [comments]

Looking for a specific tutorial website. Posted: 09 Oct 2020 10:56 AM PDT Last week I was on a different computer and I found this amazing website with a lot of resources in video game algorithms with live demos and the source code was in java or javascript. the website had detailed source code on at least the follow.
The website was modern created in the last couple years, and and in depth source code and live examples. If this sounds familiar and you know the web url, please post it. [link] [comments]

Is it possible to add music on a Text adventure Game? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 10:39 AM PDT I would like to make a text adventure game. I was wondering if it is possible to add music so it plays on a certain instant, for example during a battle? [link] [comments]

Indie game dev masters at Falmouth? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 09:20 AM PDT Has anyone looked into this and seen if it is worth it? I'm curious about a master's but wary about a degree in game dev. It does seem like it can help you go through the process of creating a game from start to finish and connecting you to the right people to start your business. [link] [comments]

Are there any aspiring developers with like half knowledge of many gamedev things? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 06:32 PM PDT Okay, so this is mainly just for laughs, but I'd consider myself to be only about half as skilled as a regular programmer, regular illustrator, and regular musician So, I was wondering if there was anyone else around here who also feels that way, like they are decent at a bunch of different aspects of game development? Then if we put our minds together, we'd equal one very skilled person! [link] [comments]
