    Blender Racetrack Unity Import Odd

    Hello all,

New to the unity and blender scene and hoping to maybe get some help. I am working on a little race track that I have created in blender. It uses a flattened cube and path to create the track. All looks well in blender. When I import into unity I get some odd artifact-ing on an upward curve.

    View in Unity

Does anyone know what could cause this? I am using a curve modifier on the block to follow the path model in blender and using an array modifier to increase the original objects size. Below is the view in blender.

    View in Blender

I am exporting the model as an .fbx from blender. I have attempted using a subdivision modifier to increase the number of vertices with no luck (Unless it needs to be applied before exporting?)

How do you flesh out a single-player story for a game? Is that what writers do?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 12:24 PM PDT

I've got a game I've been working on, and while the multiplayer aspect has always been very clear, the single-player story is something I've only recently started working out and is still vague. I have multiple ideas that have potential, but they are still vague and their potential as good stories is unclear.

Is this something a writer helps flesh out? I always assumed a writer takes an existing story and fills in the gaps with dialog and quests and such. I've got a bunch of mechanics and some ideas for how they might be tied together from a big picture point of view, but no idea how you go from that to building events and interesting conflicts and such.

I've always been hesitant to talk to writers because (shocker) I'm not a writer. How can I know from random samples whether someone will be good at writing my story? How do I spot the creativity behind the words they write?

Hey there. I want to move to Texas, and I need some help. I've been struggling to find a programmer job, as I don't have a degree. How should I go about landing a job? Where do I look? What do I do? How long do I wait to follow up?

Is it illegal to use a weapon idea from another game?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 11:52 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm currently developing a FPS game and progress is going well, we should be able to release it this month! Though I have some concerns, we're looking at different types of weapons other than guns and melee to help add a variety of new mechanics. We're looking at the TF2s demoman grenade launcher and we're considering using that mechanic design, but with an overall different weapon design. Could Valve still take legal action against us for using that grenade launcher mechanic?

How I made a game in 10 days

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:11 PM PDT

How to get started coding without any assets? I know how to code, but I have no 3D models or anything to use to TEST my code. How can I build and test my game without a 3d model to use for the player avatar, or enemies, etc?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 01:01 PM PDT

TL;DR: I can code, but I cant figure out how to get started on a game without having any 3D models, and I cant find any 3D models that would work. Pretty much all the code I would WRITE would involve the models somehow, so how do I get started without at least having placeholder models? It seems like I cant start coding without models, and I cant justify paying for models YET if I havent even written any code, so where do I get placeholder models in the mean time?

Title basically says it, but to expand on it:

Ive recently gotten back into an old hobby language I used to program in some years ago, and Im fairly proficient in it. Following the advice of the FAQ for this sub, I first recreated Pong, and then the original Super Mario bros. There were some challenges with SMB, but all in all it was something that was definitely within my skill level. Then I decided I wanted to make something of my own, and I ran into this problem; I have no assets to start with.

With pong, it was just a few rectangles and some text. With Mario, you can easily find the sprites online or even just recreate them in photoshop or even MS paint fairly easily. So when I started writing code to, say, arrange all the blocks and pipes and such in the correct order to make the levels, I HAD those blocks ready to use. When I wrote code to make mario walk and jump and such, I HAD the sprites of Mario walking and jumping and such already available.

But then I go to make something original, and... how can I write code to do stuff in game, if I have no models to do that stuff TO? How can I write code to make my player character model jump in response to the space key and run forward and back in response to the W and S keys or strafe left and right in response to the A and D keys, if I dont have a 3D model with a jump animation, and a walk animation, and a strafe animation? Same goes for trying to code pretty much anything; I need a 3D model for the code to use. Every time I think "Ok, I can work on this!" I end up realizing; nope, I need models to work on that. its like I can WRITE the code, but then I need models to actually RUN the code and see if its working right. Even if theyre just generic placeholder models, I still need SOMETHING to populate the 3D space in my game so I can even SEE if what Im coding is doing what I want to do.

I cant use blender or anything like that worth a damn, so making my own models is out. And while its easy to find free 3D models all over the place, almost none of them are animated. Im willing to pay for 3D models, but only for 3D models Ill actually USE in the final product of my game. Right now I dont know if Ill ever even HAVE a "final product", so I really just need some kind of placeholder model to use while I get things working. It doesnt really matter what it looks like as long as it works for what Ive described. It could be a 3d model of a generic RPG character or Link or Gordon Freeman or an anthropomorphic gerbil or megaman or anything else.

Ive tried looking around a lot and Ive found plenty of 3d Models, but it just seems like NONE of them are animated. I realize this may be a "beggars cant be choosers" kind of situation, but Im not asking anyone to MAKE anything for me, I just really, really wouldve thought there would already BE these kinds of assets out there for exactly this kind of situation. I wouldve thought youd be able to find game rips of all kinda of character models, but the ones I can find dont seem to have the animations intact.

How am I supposed to get started if I cant find any 3D models to start WITH? How have other people handled this problem?

Monitor recommendations to reduce eye strain

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:11 AM PDT

As the title suggests, are there monitors that create less strain on the eyes?

I dont keep my screen too bright or too dark. I try to remember to follow the 20/20/20/20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink 20 times).

What about eink monitors? They seem like they would be great for writing code.

Choosing between opentoonz, synfig, pencil2d, krita, tupi for 2D animations

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 08:47 AM PDT

I'm having a really hard time deciding. You're completely spoiled for choice when it comes to 2D animation. It's difficult to know where to even start. I'm happy to work in either pixel, vector or digitally painted art, so that difference doesn't matter.

Krita is great for general digital painting and it can do animation. It just feels really clunky to animate in, like that was some after thought. It does have a decent sized online community though.

Opentoonz seems to require some effort to learn and it's hard to know if it's worth it for game art, as it's mostly aimed at cartoonists. It's grown enormous, becoming a very popular art app.

Synfig has a lot of polish, nice features like interpolated animations and bones/splines and decent enough basic documentation, but isn't popular making it difficult to find info and tutorials for.

Pencil2D is simple enough that you don't need to look through tutorials to figure it out, but it really seems lacking in features.

I haven't even gotten around to trying out tupi yet.

Some people have also recommended using Blender's grease pencil, but that's going to take quite some time to learn if it's even worth it.

So, can anyone vested in game animation chime in on what they think. There's scarce little relevant info out there as the emphasis is on general animations for cartoons and ads, not gaming. Seriously, just any advice really.

    Titan-RTS

    Hey chaps,

just wanted to say hello from old blighty.

We are a very small game studio (3 of us), just working on our first game.

We think we have some amazing ideas (don't we all ) and a very rich story led game. I wondered how you would all feel about us sharing our path through the development phase?

This is some of the stuff we have been playing around with today, not too fancy but certainly fun :D

Or would you prefer to see up keep a sub reddit up to date (I don't want to spam this really useful resource).

In ECS based game development, why not use a linked list for components?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 11:55 AM PDT

So everyone is talking about why having same component types in contiguous memory is good and fast for CPUs, but it is definitely a hassle to implement.

So why aren't Linked lists used instead?
