Nephew expressing interest in making games, I'm not sure how to direct his learning? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 06:52 AM PDT Title sums it up, really. Nephew (7) repeatedly expressing interest in creating games but I'm a little lost on how to help him. Nearly all of the beginner resources I'm finding online seem to be targeted towards teenagers and upwards, which ends up being inaccessible to a 7yo in terms of language use/sentences/assumed knowledge. Initially we wanted to get him into a coding club in the local area but covid shut that down before he'd had chance to even start. So I guess what I'm asking is can anyone direct me to more appropriate resources? Please tell me they exist because If I have to learn how to make games myself so I can teach him I'm gonna cry. Much too smooth brained at this point in life. [link] [comments]
Sharing my Google Spreadsheet of Game Bizdev Resources (Starting with my list of 170+ Publishers) Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:35 AM PDT Hey everyone, I was inspired by /u/duartetb to share a public version of a spreadsheet that I've been keeping for a long time of Game Bizdev Resources. I have been cleaning up my personal doc and updating it, removing personal notes and contacts to give people a base list of resources that can be filtered as needed. Beginning with my Publisher sheet, I have tracked 170+ publishers around the world covering PC, Mobile, Console, and Freemium games, with some of their published games, as well as email links and form links to submit game pitches where I could find them. Eventually I will add and update additional categories of QA/Porting/Localization as well. Feel free to make a copy and keep for yourself to modify as needed. And feel free to ask me any questions you might have about gamedev, I recently have been doing a talk at Devcom and other places about the Art of the Pitch Deck with my friend Chris Wulf from Those Awesome Guys (He did a solo version of the talk at an event a few weeks back that you can watch here for free!). Do you use Google Ads to promote your mobile game? (Here's my first experience) Posted: 17 Sep 2020 11:05 AM PDT I have just finished a multiplayer card game and I would like to expand my player base. I thought Google Ads might be a good idea. So I quickly (and naively) composed a small campaign and waited for the first results. Interestingly, the campaign generated hundreds of clicks and even a significant amount of game downloads in only one night. Nice! I thought. The problem is that I do see if the game was actually played, as I track the players' performance to provide public rankings. And well, out of 55 game downloads none led to actual gameplay. I don't want to scream "fake", as I don't fully understand what's going on there yet. But, well, it looks suspicious. I would love to hear about your experience. Did you use Google Ads successfully and, if so, is there anything one should know when promoting a mobile game? [link] [comments]
Expectations for an "exploration" game? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:58 AM PDT Hey Gamedev, If you heard that a game was about "exploration" and that was basically all you knew about it what would your expectations be? What kinds of things would you expect to be able to do? I recently watched the GDC talk about meeting expectations and have been planning to market my game as and exploration game. I want to make sure that my game aligns well with general expectations of such a game. Thanks for you help in the impromptu and informal focus group! [link] [comments]
Any advice or tips on making a combat feel right? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:50 AM PDT So I'm making a Zelda breath of wild styled game but the combats more back and slash to it. As far as animations they're free ones so they don't do justice to the hack and slash feel, so that's something I'll be changing. But what makes a hack and slash feel good in combat? (Not devil May cry fast pace, a bit slower) - Hit Effects? - Hit Animations? - Enemy Knock Back ? - Minimun Camera shake upon hits (basic or lethal)?? Anything else I'm missing or advice ? PR&Marketing agencies Rates and best time to hire one! Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:52 AM PDT Hello everyone, I'm preparing a pitch for a game i have been working on with my team for a while now and i was wondering how much do PR&Marketing agencies charge to handle the whole lot from community building and management to contacting press, influencers, youtubers and streamers and everything in between. Also when is the best time to hire a PR&Marketing agency? should it be one month before release and another after release or two to three months before release? Our game is an indie game but with a slightly bigger scope than your usual indie game. it's an online multiplayer 3D platfomer game with emphasis on movement mechanics and will include various game modes. https://gfycat.com/sereneblandfish Thank you in advance for your help. Hi! I need your opinion about game music, developers! Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:18 AM PDT I have been composing music based in an illustration, trying to show the feelings and thoughts it reflect. It's for me a way to practice this functional aspect of the music and eventually make soundtracks for videogames (etc.). I'm in the "right way"? Would you consider this kind of music for your project? Here is an example: [link] [comments]

Can AutoCad drawing be useful for game development? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:23 AM PDT I know how to use AutoCad as I daily use it for 2D architechtural plans. Do you think AutoCad can be useful for game development? I know Photoshop for 2D and Blender for 3D are more used but AutoCad is what I know. 😁 What can be AutoCad useful for? [link] [comments]
Legal to give away Steam keys to Patreon supporters? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:49 AM PDT As the title reads, is it legal to give out Steam keys to patrons on Patreon? Reason I am asking is that I have a project being released soon. During my Steam store submission, I failed their review as my website linked to my Patreon page. This got me a little worried as now I am concerned that maybe there is something deep inside Steam's ToS that rules against this sort of practice? Does anyone know whether this is acceptable and won't get you kicked off the Steam store? [link] [comments]
How hard would it be to make a simple video game for a school project? Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:45 AM PDT So I am currently in grade 10 and my school has this big project where we are allowed to pick any topic and make a project out of it. I want to do something that is a little more unique than everyone else so I can get a better grade. My question is how hard would it be to make a basic video game on a program like unity? Thanks everyone [link] [comments]
