My first game just became the #1 top selling, recently released discounted Action game on Nintendo Switch. Solo developer. AMA!

I've been working as a solo developer since 2018 on Frontline Zed, which had a successful Steam launch in 2019 (getting into New and Trending) and today just released on Nintendo Switch!

Its the #1 recently released discounted Action game:

How designers create levels in games

    https://youtu.be/219vrFLiO2U

Have you ever thought about the way any location goes from the very first draft? In fact, sometimes they get a bunch of corrections or even are remade from scratch.

So today we're going to talk about the process of level design and instruments used by professional level-designers.

Most people here want to get into gamedev. I want out.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:39 AM PDT

Throwaway for obvious reasons. I've been a gamer my whole life. I've been working in the gamedev industry for barely 5 years, as a programmer. A good, loving-his-job programmer. This was my dream since childhood - to make games. Worked at an average company, not a start-up, not a AAA one either - I can't really complain about it. Involved in a lot of things, I actually enjoyed it for a few years.

Lately I've grown tired of this whole thing. Of gaming. Of the whole gamedev process. Of the weird work/life balance. In these last 6 months, I've grown to hate every working-day (huge red flag, I didn't ever think it would get to this).

I want out, but I have no idea where to go, what to transition into. Basic software development does not really seem attractive, web development even less so. Stuff like machine learning/computer vision seems interesting, but I have no clue if I would actually like working on it. Same for cybersecurity (and from my newbie 1 hour research, this field might also require always being on-call, which I despise).

I also fear that my lack of experience in these fields would make me have to take a pay cut and/or start from a junior, entry role (there goes my 'almost-senior' level).

Not sure what I'm trying to accomplish by posting this, maybe hoping another viewpoint would help me sort stuff out. Even my friends say I'm a bitch for complaining, so I don't really have somebody to talk to about this. Maybe some of you already went through this, in which case I'd love to hear about your experience.

Any suggestion helps. Thanks for reading my rant.

    Issues Releasing To Steam

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:20 AM PDT

UPDATE: Solved. There was an issue with Steam on their end, they did not clarify but they needed to republish the store page and packages themselves.

My team and I released out free to play title on steam at 12am today, however it is now 10am PST and our game is still unavailable to download from the store page. We've contacted Steam with no response. We know it is not an issue with the game's build or store visibility, as we have checked everything on our app and store admin, and users who received press keys have been able to play the game with no issue. We are extremely frustrated as emails have already gone out to users who wishlisted our title, but they are unable to actually download the game, so we fear that because of this we will loose that potential player.

Has anyone had this issue or know a solution? We have waited 9 hours for steam to respond but we are really running out of time here.

Multiple Cameras in Unity, near and far clipping planes

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Hello. In my game I want to have large draw distances about 4-5km and I also want to be able to get really close to some things. If I set my clipping planes to be really close and really far then i get some flickering in the shadows in the distance, this can be easily solved by making my near clipping plane about 1m, but that's way too far for what I need.

I am wondering if it's possible to have two cameras active at the same time and one camera has clipping planes of say 0.01 to 1 and another camera which has a clipping plane of 1 to 5000.

How would I set this up so they don't over lap each other? will there be any problems? and performance hit by having 2 cameras even though they aren't rendering the same stuff?

Anything I need to keep an eye out for?

Can I add items to a game built with Unreal Engine?

    I'm looking at this: https://store.steampowered.com/app/904960/Cine_Tracer/

It's used to previz films. But it's very limited in terms of props and locations.

Can I add my own locations and props?

    Thank you!

What genre of music would you guys say goes best with video games?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Other than orchestra, what would you say would be the music genre that covers the most ground when trying to give a specific theme for a game whilst not taking the attention away from it?

I know that all music can be used to set the mood in a way you want and something like dubstep could even be used to add sadness to a game if done correctly, but I am specifically asking about what genre would you say has the least amount of finagling around to get to work?

Combinations (either an actual combination or simply alternating between two or three genres) are also acceptable answers. Just no more than three.

I'd love some words of encouragement.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 07:46 AM PDT

So here's where I am. I've done a bunch of YouTube tutorials and even bought a few courses on Udemy. I've made two basic games that I've uploaded to itch.io. That said, I don't feel I've actually learned anything. I'm confident I can make some models and rigs in Blender and I can find my way around Unity but none of the coding is sticking. I have to look up code on how to do eeeeverything.

I'm in a position right now where I just don't know what to do. Should I have a game I'm actively working on or should I just be doing tutorials? Should I focus all my gamedev time into trying to remember lines of code? I'm feeling overwhelmed and want to quit because I feel as though I'll never actually get it

How to best raise awareness for a porject?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:26 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for advice on how to best raise awareness for my project that is currently in devlopment - while not quite ready to show yet the time is coming. I was thinking social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and YouTube) to show trailers and devlogs, and as platforms to engage with those interested, but would love to hear fellow devs on their approach; thank you 😊.

In Unity how do I keep gameobjects destroyed after loading a new scene and then going back to the previous one?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 10:21 AM PDT

I'm incredibly stuck in my game right now. This is my first "big" game I'm making and so far it's been pretty easy sailing. I just now hit a massive road block when I realized I need to start using stuff like playerprefs and static variables, and I'm not sure how to. I've watched a lot of tutorials but I still feel like none exactly describe how I fix this. In my game, you have to go around and pickup these "flowers". There isn't an inventory system or anything, so picking one up basically means to walk up to it, press E, and it disappears. The point of picking it up is that every 5 flowers you pick up, it adds on to the music. I have a simple function saying if the amount of flowers picked up = 5, then play the new part of the song. How do I make it so when the player goes to a new scene and comes back, the flowers are still destroyed, and the variable of how many flowers the player picked up is 5, and the new music plays right away? I'm really new to this so more in depth examples or video links would be really appreciated instead of broad answers. Thank you!
