The first 'real' website I have made. Please could I get some feedback? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:59 AM PDT Here is the link: https://azmotion.co.uk/ I'm a 14 year old and I must say that web design is REALLY fun. I spent quite a long time on the website, so I appreciate any words! I am aware of glitches with the animations on mobile, and I'm in the process of fixing them. Thanks! [link] [comments]

"Hi, I need a website" - How to deal with small Freelance clients before the project starts? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:56 AM PDT I know there are a lot of posts about freelancing and how to get clients, but my problem is actually how to deal with the first contact. I work at a company as a frontend (sometimes backend) developer and once in a while someone sends me a message like this:
I usually reply saying "Sure, what's the idea?". Then the person usually says that the goal of the website is to promote something, to be found at google or to have a website that's better than the current one. This person has low budget and is not tech savvy, so the problem can be easily solved with WordPress and a theme (even though I don't like It, It's clearly the right tool here). At this point, I don't know what to do or say because my mind just thinks "Ok, I can do It, sounds pretty simple". But as this answer sounds terrible, I usually say "Ok, I'll estimate the costs and get back to you".

How to/should I bring up concerns about the web development with my boss Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:46 PM PDT TL;DR My boss asked an external developer to build a company website and I have been semi-managing them. My opinion of the developer is pretty low and I think the site we have is slow, poorly built and hard to update and maintain. I am not a professional developer and am a fairly recent graduate so my experience is limited. I am unsure if my concerns are valid or how to communicate them properly if they are. ————————— The company I work for is very small and family run. My work is mostly design based but I have a range of responsibilities. Recently we have been hoping to grow more and have updated the branding and website. Initially I was asked to create the website but I was delayed due to other projects and was contacted by an external company we work with, they had been asked to build the new company site. I was a little put out but am not a professional developer so I saw the logic of them building it rather than me. They told me that they would use bootstrap and make it responsive. Anyway they later asked me to check their work and it was, in my opinion, a mess. My prototype was written with just my own HAML/SCSS which I complied to an S3 bucket. My boss can be quite fickle so I felt most comfortable with writing it like this. They had mostly copied the compiled HTML and CSS from my prototype and then used some of the bootstrap classes and JavaScript. A myriad of @media (max-width: ) had also been added presumably to make it responsive. They seemed to have tested the site in chrome using the built in responsive test sizes and I wouldn't call it responsive as it would look broken at a number of sizes they hadn't tested for. I raised some concerns with my boss but I was fairly polite as 1) I know he respected them and presumably they have a good track record and 2) I am not a professional or used to corporate web development so I wasn't sure how warranted my concerns were. I have however remained concerned, it takes me a long time to describe the changes they need to make and then checking they have actually done it. I have tried a number of ways of communicating to them but they don't seem to be capable of doing more than 1 simple thing at a time before asking me to check it. My opinion is that they have made the site badly and it is hard to update the design or content as a result. I suggested using a site generator and/or a CMS but neither my boss nor the developer seems to understand why that would be helpful. The site is fairly simple but is running on a server with laravel. I have been tempted to rebuild it myself with a CMS using gatsby ir something but that seems rude and I don't want to use company time nor my personal time. I have ended up doing a lot myself as it takes more time to go back and forth with the developers and sometimes I don't have a fully realised prototype to share and that would also take too much time. Do you think my concerns are valid and should I bring them up in a more forthright manner, if so have you any suggestions? I am happy to share the site address if you want to look at it. Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:20 PM PDT "finished" my first website the other day. You can find it here. Learned so much, and still a long way to go! Going through the process of converting this site to run with Flask now. Eventually I would like to add functionality for the user (me) to add and remove content through an "admin" UI. One thing I would love feedback on specifically is on the portfolio page, you can click on the images to enlarge them and see extra images. However, it is not immediately obvious that one can click on them. What are things you can do as the developer to indicate that an image is "clickable" without explicitly stating it? Newbie building a plain HTML blog "from scratch" -- where should I start? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:16 PM PDT Hi all, I'm a computer scientist with basic skills trying to learn to write a website. I have the hosting basics down. I have a lot of Linux experience, have a Linux server setup, managed get Nginx reverse-proxy over Apache webserver working, and I can write basic HTML. I'm working on a very simple, flat-structure static site generator, which takes Markdown posts, spits them out as HTML, and syncs them up to the server. It'll also generate (and sync) a sort-by-date.html and sort-by-tag.html. No JavaScript, no CSS, no PHP backend. I'm doing this to get my hands "dirty", but now I want to clean up and do this "the right way", preferably using minimal extra technologies (e.g. no Node.js, no SQL server, no Kubernetes, etc.) I also still want to do it "by hand", i.e. no WordPress or other blogging software. So, only HTML, vanilla JavaScript, CSS, and maybe some PHP. I'm not a minimalist or against any specific toolkit! I just want to become familiar with the core web technologies that were here 15 years ago and will still be here in 15 years. So, my question: Does anybody have any recommendations for tutorials like this? One that builds a blog from scratch? Or even an exemplary sample codebase of this sort? [link] [comments]
Vertical line that follows mouse Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT Hello all, I am trying to make a red vertical line show up wherever the mouse hovers, within a particular div. I would like to use CSS, which is the trick. Is there a way to do this with just CSS? Thank you! [link] [comments]
I made a PWA vue aplication. Would like feedback! Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:49 PM PDT I decided to dip my toes into making a PWA vue app also hosted on netlify instead of github this time! It's a calculator app that keeps track of history of the equations you've typed in. https://pwavuecalculator.netlify.app/#/ Features: -Adaptive to multiple screen sizes -Multiple color themes with specific light/dark modes for each theme -Calculator displays text of equations typed in and stores them in local storage displaying them on the nav -If the equation history list is greater than 10 it then loops through each item replacing that with the new equation to prevent overflow -All data and themes are stored in local storage so that your selected theme, whether it's light or dark mode, and equations are saved and displayed upon the pages reload That's basically it!! I would greatly appreciate any feedback, also feel free to lmk if y'all find any bugs. Also is this a good project to put on my future portfolio? [link] [comments]
Brushing up on HTML and CSS, and this is the first site I deployed! Any feedback welcome! Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:13 PM PDT https://distracted-snyder-95ccaf.netlify.app/ Just spent the past month brushing up on my HTML and CSS fundamentals and practicing using Flexbox, and to solidify my knowledge, I've been working on a mock site the past week with vanilla HTML/CSS and some JS for one of the local karaoke joints (responsive on mobile too). Any feedback is welcome! [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:42 PM PDT Hi all! I'm relatively new to the front end design aspect of development. I also lack a creative gene and generally see things as black and white. Are there some general rules or factors you keep in mind when crafting the design of a site? For example specific spacing or color schemes to avoid/use. Thanks in advance !! [link] [comments]
Why build a website over using the popular site such as squarespace? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:21 PM PDT I'm new to programming, and have picked up HTML and CSS as a start, i'm interested in building websites to later build them for other people. So my questions is this; whats the difference between building a website yourself for a client, as apposed to them just using a website builder site. people IRL have asked this and they just jump to that option, what can I, and a web dev provide to a client that something like, WIX or Squarespace cannot?
