Introducing Reactive Resume v2, the free and open source resume builder!

    Hey r/webdev!

I've been waiting all week for today (Saturday) to be able to post this here. 🥳

It's with extreme excitement, happiness and relief that I can now say, introducing… Reactive Resume v2. With nearly 1.7k stars on GitHub, around 100 closed issues and feature requests, I heard you loud and clear and revamped the project from the ground up, and boy, am I excited to hear what you guys think about this!

Without much ado, here's the link to the all new Reactive Resume:

    https://rxresu.me

    https://preview.redd.it/3l440ri56jb51.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=220089afa56c9df4268caa2f910b37940c4b81f6

For those of you who are not aware of the project, here's the cliff note: Reactive Resume is a free, open source, ad-free, private app that focuses on making the mundane tasks of creating, updating and sharing your resume a piece of cake.

Here is a subset of features introduced in the all new revamp:

    • Manage multiple resumes with one account, and sync your data across devices
    • Sign in with Google, or sign in anonymously just to test the app
    • Send your resume to others with a unique sharable link
    • Structure sections and change layouts the way you want to
    • Import your existing JSON Resume in one click
    • Everything is still free, and always will be.

Here is the link to the GitHub Repository, if you'd like to go through the code (it's in React, hence the name): https://github.com/AmruthPillai/Reactive-Resume and if you have an itch to contribute to the project, it would be extremely helpful to translate the app into your own language so people across the world would be able to use it with ease.

Please do take a few minutes to go through the app, and if you loved it, let me know in the comments below on what could be better. Thank you so much for all the support!

Advice for my portfolio site as a beginner

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 08:41 AM PDT

Hey guys, I appreciate any comments in advance. I'm looking for advice on what to include or take out of my portfolio. Before I make it live I want it to be almost perfect, or at least good enough. I've already posted to r/Frontend before and I got some advice on the look of the site. I was told it looked very 2001 so I spent a few days redesigning it and I feel I've gotten to a point where I'm happy with the design and layout. A link to that previous post is included here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Frontend/comments/h7vh4w/draft_portfolio_site_could_i_get_some_feedback_to/

I have a few questions about certain parts of my updated site:

    1. Should I include a photo of myself? Some people have told me to include it as it adds a feeling of it being more personal, whereas others have advised me to treat it like a resume. You wouldn't include a photo of yourself on a resume (in the UK anyway) so its advised not to include one on your site.
    2. What sort of details should be included in my section telling a bit about me? I've included my name, age and where I'm based. I've also mentioned about my work experience unrelated to web dev, but I've counteracted it with how I first got interested in web development through watching my dad run his own site for 10 years and creating a site in school when I was 15 using Dreamweaver.
    3. How many projects should I include? My first project, an information page about characters from a video game, was very naff and was created by following a tutorial, but my most recent was a soundboard which I created myself with no help and not following a tutorial
    4. Would it be a good idea to include a page about what I've been up to? Not so much in a blog layout with different posts, but as a timeline of what I've been up to recently with the most recent at the top.
    5. On each page about my projects, what sort of information should I include when I talk abut the project? I was thinking to obviously include the technologies I used to create it, but also a few sentences about my thought process and the inspiration behind the page.

My first working project. See Spotify's audio analysis of your favorite tracks, adjust these features to better control the track recommendations that you receive. Optionally create playlists with the recommendations.

Been working on my portfolio website for the last couple of months. It's a fun side project and I really enjoyed learning about some UI and frontend development. The site is not yet complete, but any feedback would be great! Link: https://vitaliy-ostapchuk.netlify.app/home

Coding on an ancient laptop: can this machine get the job done?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:53 PM PDT

After awhile without a computer, I managed to buy my cousin's laptop for 50 bucks. It's old, REALLY old. It's a Centrino dual core with 1.8GHz and 3gb of RAM. It's says it was designed for Windows XP, so I suspect it's +12 years old.

It came with Windows 7 Ultimate and it was impossible to use it, so now I'm running AntiX Linux on it and this little warrior allowed me to start to learn programming (currently through Angela Yu's bootcamp on Udemy). It's running Visual Studio Code and Brave Web Browser, although it crashes sometimes and I'm forced to turn off the machine.

But here's the thing: I'm such a crazy dumbass and I want to start freelancing on this laptop and earn money to buy a new one. Do you guys think this laptop could be used to start working?

You see, I've been doing some small projects on HTML and CSS, and the laptop had no problems so far (unless I open too many tabs on the browser to Google stuff or watch tutorials). However, I don't know if it'll be capable of running JavaScript, jQuery, Node.Js, React, and all the stuff web developers need.

I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Edit: No, there's no way I can get another laptop right now, even those you find on eBay for 200 bucks. I'm poor af and I'm an adult, so I can't ask anyone to give me one. No jokes, I'm so poor that I'm posting this using my neighbor's Wi-Fi (I'm also using it for Udemy) LOL

[ShowOff Saturday] I created a simple Portfolio Builder using the MERN stack

[ShowOff Saturday] I created a simple Portfolio Builder using the MERN stack

Hi guys, sharing this MERN stack project I created. It's a portfolio builder website where anyone can create an account and then create or update their profile. They can also share the public link of their portfolio with others.

    Video

    • Git Link: https://github.com/h4wwk3ye/Portfolio
    • Responsive design.
    • The NodeJS backend part is written completely in Typescript.
    • The frontend is written in React and uses Material UI as the UI framework.
    • Global react state management is done using RecoilJS, latest react state management library by facebook.
    • Profile Images are uploaded to AWS S3.
    • The project is deployed on Amazon EC2.

This is just a hobby project I did as I wanted to create a portfolio but also wanted to do a full stack project so created this project. Created this in last 12-13 days so there would be errors.

I need some help determining what type of database I should use.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 11:58 AM PDT

Ever since I started learning about databases, the use-cases between SQL and NoSQL have been confusing me. I keep hearing "SQL is for relational data" but I am not really sure what relational means. Can I not imitate an SQL table with a simple Mongo schema?

I am working on a project right now and I am about to begin start building the backend. However, I am not so sure what type of database to use. The app is a simple fitness app that tracks users statistics (like calorie intake, weight, reps, sets, etc.) and also provides a simple sample program to follow. It's not exactly clear to me if this data is relational or not.

    Any help would be appreciated.

What is the fastest way to create a simple/scalable web app

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 12:36 PM PDT

Hi there, recently I got a small project to create, and I'm a little bit confused about what framework or anything. I know php, html, css, mysql, javascript. but I did not develop any project with frameworks before, the problem that if I want to make everything from scratch it will take time, and I only have one week. I'm a fast learner, but I just don't know how to start, since I only have one week to deliver. The project is for a tylor shop. there should be a login, 2 types of users. one for affiliates, those will take measures of the clothes that tge cutomer wants. and the other one is for the accounting dept. to show all the orders with name, order, etc.. I know it's easy and I can make it in one week even if it was from scratch, but I just want to develop it with a framework or something, for future purposes and scalability.
