I've created 6 episodes so far in the Game Mechanics Quests and I'm planning a lot more, but I need your FeedBack if you've watched any of them in should I keep the same video/Code/tutorial overall style or invent something new. (Code on Github and Links in the Comments)

Any beginner-friendly programming principles to adapt when making my second game?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 03:43 AM PDT

Hey! I just made my first game (small) game, and although I managed to finish it the code is a mess! Im not very proficient in either C# or unity and would classify myself as a beginner, but I am still wondering:

Whats the most important thing/things to have in mind when writing clean code? Any go to resources that a beginner can easily adapt? :) TY!

    2d Walking animation perspective angle

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Hey guys I'm working on a game and I am completely brand new to animation and I was wondering about the community's thoughts on this:

For walking animations do you make your character's perspective look like the camera is dead on the side of the character so that it is just their profile or do you think it's better to have a slight angle as to see their face better? I feel like my character (a spider) is much easier to animate as a dead on profile angle, but I feel like the face of my character looks kind of odd from just a profile perspective. Is there a common rule about this sort of thing that I'm completely missing in the video game animation world?

    Are banner ads worth it?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 11:34 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm having trouble deciding whether to include banner ads in my mobile game. I'm getting close to releasing it and have already put in skippable video ads at set intervals, and if I were to include banner ads they would feature on the pause/settings page. However, I'm afraid that these would just annoy the player, while their payout would be really small and not make much of a contribution to my earnings from the game.

Would anyone be able to tell me if including banner ads in my game is actually worth it, or should I just use video ads instead? Thanks for your help :)

Oh, and by the way I'm using Unity Ads.

Tips and tools for VR game development

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 07:08 AM PDT

Hello! So I have been coding 2d and 3d games for a while now, and just a couple of weeks ago I got my oculus quest. Then I thought to my self*: "wouldn't it be cool to make my own game on the quest!". So I tried making one and it went great. Here's the problem, there are so many ways to create a vr games. Some people use tools like VRTK, others use things like the Unity XR Interaction toolkit.

My question is there a "best" way to create a VR game. Is there something I should think about or somethings that you guys would like to share. I don't know which tools will save me most time, or which ones will be most adaptable. Anyways I would love to know if anyone has a guide or any tips about what tools too use and such.

    Suing over a game clone?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 12:58 PM PDT

My friend is making a game that very closely resembles an unfinished game that already exists. In fact, the entire point of my friend's game is to produce a finished product of that original, unfinished game, with some changes so it isn't an exact clone, but rather a revamped, originally coded, completed version of the unfinished game.

The developer of the original unfinished game is threatening legal action on my friend. The unfinished game has no trademarks, patents, or any other legal backing. It is solely the concept of one man, born out of a common trope used in anime. The assets used in the game are almost exclusively from the Unity store. My friend, however, is using completely different assets that he made from scratch, custom animations, with models that look different.

The games are admittedly similar in objective and aesthetic. Both of the games take place in an anime school, both feature a schoolgirl killing her schoolmates to win the affection of her crush. Every week there is a new schoolmate that must be eliminated. That's where the similarities end.

Can the developer of the first game use legal force to prevent my friend from developing a game based on the same rough concept, or is my friend doing something totally legal?

Can anyone here publishing on steam or xbox explain me how is he doing about taxes?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:37 PM PDT

    Hi ,
I'm about to sign contracts with xbox to give me devkits to publish my game , but they told me I need to have some kind of registered company or sole trader ... I choose LLC .I'm a single member LLC and I'm not a us resident or citizen.

they told me they will withhold 30% of the US revenue unless there is a treaty between my country and US , in my case there is no tax treaty between the two countries , I don't have a problem with the withholding , they can take as much as they want , but the problem is I don't have an ITIN and can't get one .

my question is : Am I required to send them (to xbox) some kind of form that requires an ITIN ?(for tax withholding purpose)
if yes, Can I use an individual EIN instead of ITIN ?

    I can't get an ITIN because :
    - my passport is not in english

    - it's prohibited by the law to send an official document by mail (which is required to get ITIN .)

    Thank you

Godot for Augmented Reality apps? (Especially, with Rust)

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm interested in creating augmented reality (AR) apps. Would Godot + Rust be a good choice for this?

It seems Unity3D is the leader in this space, but it also seems it's not possible to create AR apps with Unity and Rust ergonomically (which I'd like to do, if possible). Further, it seems developers are generally happier with Godot than with Unity (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I never used a game engine before, and I'm new to Rust. A friend of mine (who is a Cinema 4D user) wants to start an AR app development business with me, and I'm researching my options at the moment.

I'm not really ecstatic about learning C# for Unity (I probably could/would use F#, however), and even less to learn C++ for Unreal Engine, so it would be great if Godot is a good choice for AR/VR.

A disadvantage of Godot compared to Unity seems to be that there are much fewer resources available (tutorials, ect.), especially for AR/VR. This probably would be a significant disadvantage for me because I'm completely new to VR/AR, 3D, game engines, etc.

Our main target will be Apple ARKit for which Godot has support, but I'm not 100% sure if this functionality is ready for production. If I understand what I've read correctly, this feature is still in alpha – is that correct?

    So my main questions are:

    1) Is Godot ready for production in regard to ARKit augmented reality apps?

And 2) what are the disadvantages (and advantages) of Godot (in regard to VR/AR) compared to Unity3D?

Also thanks for any other tip or hint!

What do you call someone who provides extremely valuable music composition feedback?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 05:54 AM PDT

I hired a composer to make a track and it was great. Then I had someone who is really strong with music review it and constantly give it revision suggestions such as changing instruments, changing melodies, etc. I would like to properly credit her, because the track went from great to wonderful. Music feedback seems too vague and does not communicate her talent. But I feel music direction is reserved for the composer and would undermine his talents. What's a suitable term? Supervisor? Quality Assurance?

    Thank you

Submitted my game to Google Play, says its live but cant be seen in store?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 05:26 AM PDT

Hey guys, I just released my first ever game onto the google play store, its a small augmented match 3 game where you match a sequence to coloured gems to make them explode, I won't put the name because I don't wanna look like I'm shilling it.

The google play console has it listed as "all updates live" but its not visible in the store and the direct link only works for the people I gave beta access, and just links them to the beta.

Should I understand this as its "live" as in all the updates have made it to the beta stage, but the game has not been pushed to production yet? There is no indication that the game shouldn't be visible in the store. Thanks :)

Is it legal to use certain youtube video clips in a game?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 08:45 AM PDT

    Example:

I plan to make collectible audio-logs with recorded speeches of people like Alan Watts, Carl Jung and such.

Is it legal to take a video, extract audio and use it as audiologs in a game? The clips of Alan Watts are from the 60's, so most likely in the public domain, so are the videos of Carl Jung, taken in 1950's, I think - I am not sure if it is public domain, and if it isn't, if anyone would mind.

How is it with using these old videos and audio? Where can I find if it is fine to use them?

Achieving a simple rain effect (3D)

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 11:39 PM PDT

I just finished following an official unity tutorial to make a roll the ball style game and now I want to extend it just to learn more about unity. I was wondering how to make it look like as if it was raining within the bounds of the platform. I've looked around for some resources but most of them seem overkill and I only want a really minimal rain effect (think tiny blue lines hitting the ground.)

Also how would I make the ground look a bit watery? Do I have to use shaders for that purpose?
