Would you want a YouTube series explaining physics and maths and how they apply to video games and game design?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 12:26 AM PDT

After seeing quite an amount of people who have a lesser understanding of both mathematics and physics, I wondered if people would like to watch such thing, as making a good physics script requires some(or most) of that understanding...

How do I stop making tools and start making games?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:10 PM PDT

I am one of these delusional people who convinced themselfs that we need to make a game engine. I always told myself I hate the workflow of Unity and alike, and I always got frustrated using a conventional game engine.

However, I made a realisation recently which really scares me: Maybe I just don't like making games?

My game engine is far from being done, but it is far enaugh that I could start writing game logic and make something presentable. But somehow, I've been procrastinating harder than ever before. The literal next step in my plan is start programming some collisions and start controlling a character, yet I still really want to improve my render pipeline and add features, which are unnecessary at this point of time.

I really want to make a game, but I start to think that I don't actually enjoy the process of making a game. Somehow, I am only productive when I am working at my engine.

Did any of you have a simmelar experience? How did you manage to get out of this and how did you actually start making games?

How to Visualize the Memory Layout of Your Game (Memory Profiler Series: Part 2)

This neat memory map visualization mode helps you find out:

    • How is your memory layout structured?
    • What memory regions does Unity have?
    • How fragmented is your memory?

Indie dev as a side job and anxiety

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:47 AM PDT

So long story short: I'm 27 and a software developer, working on the field for about 2 years. I started software development mainly because of games although I didn't get to the area, here in Brazil there's a few game studio companies.. I try to study about game development of work, it's complicated because I have a five months daughter. I like game programming and currently I'm also studying about pixel art and game art subjects. The problem is I get my anxiety really high because I kinda blame myself I should study about programming in general, not games, since it's the main income that my family have.. I really wanted to open a game studio someday.. I don't know if I should only focus at least on game programming since it's not far away from my main field, and then I don't "waste time" studying about other game topics.. I really enjoy though..I think I'm a very multidisciplinar person. Thanks.

Should I pursue what I think it will bring most joy or should I focus now on what I already have? (my job)

How do you find people to work with you on projects?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:13 AM PDT

Hello! I have been wondering how do some of you find people to work with on projects.

For example I'm working on a project and I'm mainly focusing on the programming and the behind the scenes part of things, I don't really have a good taste for designing things like UI/UX, environments, etc, characters.

I heard about some businesses like WeWork and IWG that provide workspaces and you can cooperate with others in the same workspace. This sounds really cool, however, I don't really have the funds for it now, maybe in the future when I get some income from my projects.

What other ways are there to find people to collaborate on projects with?

    Thanks!

    Building a long-term mindset

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:03 PM PDT

    Hey all,

So I have really just been doing game dev as a hobby. I really enjoy playing around with engines, prototyping and such, but have never really put time and effort into a long-term project. I've started to try and commit to some bigger projects lately, but can't seem to get my head out of the space that things should be more complete than they are, or that I should be able to get everything done within a few weeks.

I imagine this is an issue that a lot of developers have gone through, so I thought I'd ask your stories of how you transitioned yourself from a short to a long-term mindset when it comes to game development.

    Game Dev Commentaries

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I've been watching a lot of Valve's game commentaries, and I'm wondering if there's any other games that include similar in-game commentary?

As far as I know, Valve's the only one I've ever seen do this. I wish this was more common, but I understand it can be time consuming and devs usually have other ways to explain their ideas and process outside of the game.

I need a little help on how to achieve this.

I need a little help on how to achieve this.

I want to make a game based around the topic of logic gates.

The game should detect camera input and should be able do detect if the shown logic gate is correct.

My question is, how to make it detect if it is correct or not. I have used Unity3D as a starting point because I have already some knowledge about using this engine. But I don't know if unity is the best option out there to achieve this task.

    Does AWS GameLift provide storage?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:29 AM PDT

Hey everyone, sorry for the dumb question. I'm currently write a Technical Design Document for a university course and i'm really having an hard time understanding the GameLift service. On the website it says that GameLift offers 50GB of storage per instance, but from my understanding it is deleted when the instance is removed. So if i need to store player data do i need to get an additional storage (like S3) or is there a default storage provided by GameLift?

Experienced marketer wants to help an indie game dev with marketing

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:23 AM PDT

    Hi all

I want to help a game dev bring his game to the market.

I've been a professional marketeer (freelance) for 7 years now, mainly active in the startup scene launching products with great content, community building and paid ads. Most of them succeeded and some have been sold or have consistent revenue streams.

I have always been a gamer and I'm thinking of focusing on marketing for indie games, but I haven't done marketing for a game before.

That's why I'm looking for an indie game project to kickstart my career in game marketing :)

If you are making a game and need help with marketing, hit me up!

    Alot of questions.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:02 AM PDT

I just graduated hs and i want to learn game development as a hobby am welling to throw some money into it to but i have some problems.

1- i have 0 experience with everything thats related to making games (writing , coding, pixel art, making music etc..) And i want to learn all of those even if it took a year or two or even more but i l don't know where to start there is a lot to learn its overwhelming me.

2- because i have 0 experience i don't know the exact tools that i need (programs , engines, Daws etc...) or hardware ( drawing tablets, music making tools etc..) i know some of what i said isnt needed but i dont know what exactly or what to get.

3- where to learn? Due to covid it has to be online do i get skillshare and learn every program that i need (engines , daws etc..) or is there anything better?. As i said im welling to pay money for all of this but i dont want to go overboard.

4- in what order do i learn do i start with coding or music or art?. Im not sure where to start.

i know that this post sounds like im ranting but i really want to invest my time and energy to game development but i want to get head start by asking you about the start.

If you ask what type of game i want to make my answer would probably be 2d game with pixel art . But thats for the final product after i learn everything that i need. For the time being i will do with anything beginner friendly.

Thank you for reading this long post.

I'm making a camera system for my game like old-style resident evil games and wasn't sure if should use either a singleton or an observer.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:51 AM PDT

Hey guys so I'm creating a camera manager system in unreal and I wasn't 100% sure how to make if efficiently. I have one working at the moment but it's quite arbitrary.

Basically I want to make a camera system that changes camera on entering a new room, similar to old resident evil games or telltale games. The level would be a series of rooms in a house.

To do this I was going to create a camera manager class which would deal with functionality and have a class derive from camera manager that would be responsible triggering when a player is entering a new room. I'm still new to game dev so I was unsure if maybe I should attempt to create an observer system or even make the camera manager a singleton and have it deal with functionality while the derived class would deal with the collisions and specific room information.

Sorry if my question is a bit vague, I can expand on anything if needed! Thanks a lot in advance! :)

    Panda3D and Shark 3D

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 10:51 AM PDT

Quick question - does anyone here use either Panda3D or Shark 3D?

How do these compare to Unity and UE4?

I'm still a beginner with all of it, but I'm a little more experienced with Python than C++ or C#.

    Input is appreciated!

An easy tool for sharing before & after screenshots

    Posted: 02 Jul 2020 01:39 AM PDT

We've been working on our game for nearly 2 years now and when doing so we often revisit areas and update them (add in new models, refresh current ones etc). To continue to do good social media we've often posted these but it's always been a bit of a pain as it's hard to appricate before and after photos when they are above each other, so I've made a little gamedev tool that I hope some of you might appreciate.
