I’m David Aldridge, the Director of Engineering for Destiny at Bungie. AMA! Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:03 PM PDT I've been doing engineering on games for about 20 years, and I've been at Bungie for 12, doing everything from perf optimization to networking to coffee-drinking. I'm here today with Chris Kosanovich (u/BNG-ChrisK), the Engineering Manager on Destiny. Together, we lead and serve Destiny's engineering team of about 110 talented souls (soon to be more!). We're hoping to share fun stuff about engineering on Destiny, engineering at Bungie, getting into games as an engineer, and anything else y'all are interested in. A special note to our friends from r/destinythegame: we know you might have questions about current game design hot topics or future Destiny releases. As engineers, we're totally not the right people to answer those, so you can expect us to dodge them like crazy. Other than that, please ask us anything! Proof: https://i.redd.it/kctix0ead3751.jpg (edit) thanks everyone for the great conversation! It's 5pm our time and Chris & I are mostly signing off to go to other meetings, but this has been super fun. Let's do it again sometime! [link] [comments]

Is it fair for a publisher to ask for a 50/50 split? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:18 AM PDT I've been a hobbyist game developer for about 5 years. Recently I've had the opportunity to present a prototype to a publisher/developer. This guy has his own small studio that makes its own games, and he wants to put some of his studio's resources towards developing my game. This would involve help with the business side of things, such as marketing and getting me console dev kits, as well as the actual development of the game in the form of his developers creating assets and doing some level design. My question is: is it fair for him to ask for a 50/50 split? I've done some searching and it seems that 30-40% is most common, but this seems to be a bit of a different scenario since they're taking an active part in the development. I've also already asked to keep the IP and they're cool with that. [link] [comments]

How to make "roles" in a hide and seek game? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:17 PM PDT I'm fairly new to game development with some basic coding under my belt. My first project is going to be a hide and seek game where sight is limited in a close quarters area. I'm currently just going to make the basic game with primitive shapes and test all the logic to ensure it works. I'm about to make the "Hider" and "Seeker" characters. My question is, when I make these players and add user input to them, how can I differentiate the controller on each character so I can test them in the scene? If I obviously use getAxis for Horizontal and Vertical axis's but put them on both characters, they'd both move simultaneously. Would it be better to completely develop on role before going to the other? Perhaps I am going at it the wrong way since I'm new but I will appreciate any help that can be offered. Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:30 AM PDT Hello everyone! What techniques do you use in audio ducking to create the overall audio experience? For example, ducking the music when the player opens the menu screen, or ducking other SFX when the player attacks an enemy. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:06 AM PDT so, I've been doing courses on udemy, practicing on unity. I know some C# (worked with in web dev for companies) but I have 0 creativity or scope. I had a few ideas, but as soon as I start I get blocked. I've done the example games from courses, and I kinda understand. but I'm struggling to make the first step. maybe is hard to do it alone? are there communities which I can reach to join small teams for casual stuff? I thought of gamejams, but having a baby and full time job I don't really have the time to join a 48 hours gamejam and at the same time I don't see myself completing a game in that timeframe. where can I start as a new game dev? I was learning about doing RPG, but I think all the quests and stuff could take more than years to finish on my own. I don't know.. I feel discouraged on my own, I don't run away from work, but I don't know if I'm doing it well. I feel "inadequate" any tips? [link] [comments]

What kind of data that game devs need before they create/start a new project? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:25 PM PDT Hello people, I just want to know what kind of data that game devs need. I mean both big game developer companies and small developers. Is there any paid service that provides data for them ? How do they search or predict their potential market ? Are big game companies interested in acquiring other companies or their financials ? Thanks [link] [comments]

Beginner mobile game developer using Corona Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:02 PM PDT Hey guys So with the onslaught of Covid-19 I'm one of those blokes who lost their job during lockdown. I've been watching a lot of videos on mobile game development; tutorials, etc. and it seems like a lot of fun and perhaps even something I can do to make some money. Now, I'm a complete beginner with programming. I had Calculus at University so I guess that'll help me a bit. I was thinking I'd use Corona to make a few games and see if I like it or not. I've begun doing tutorials and have written some very rudimentary code. I'm beginning to understand Lua more and more, though I'm still a complete noob lol. Where do you guys think I should begin? What resources can I utilize online? Any forums/websites I should check out? Any tutorial videos I can watch? Where besides Reddit can I ask people questions about stuff like this? Like I said, I've got all the time in the world now and I'm really keen to become a successful programmer. Really any and all help is immensely appreciated! P.S: My first games are going to be extremely basic so I'm not trying to climb a mountain in a day or anything. I know there's a learning curve, but I think I've got the will to do it. Any game dev videos/articles that aren't for absolute beginners? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:37 AM PDT The average tutorial explaining how to do something usually is very simple:
I'm new to game development but not new to programming, so I dont need syntax explanation and the code above is easy to grasp without any explanation whatsoever. I'm looking for resources that explain complex mechanics and assume I at least know how to code. [link] [comments]

What Game Engine Should I Use? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:32 AM PDT TL;DR-i want to make 3d person game and I dont know what engine to use. I know this question is asked probably every day but I have some different questions than the normal "What Engine Should I Use?" T he games im looking to make or learn to make are 3d games with more realistic Graphics rather than the low poly graphics not that it matters since models dont have much to do with programming, the reason I bring that up is that I want to learn to makes games but also learn to program as that is the field im looking to work in, The main question I want answered is can I learn C++ through blueprints and which engine would it be easier to make games like DayZ or Ghost Recon (minus the multiplayer right now just mechanics) in. Sorry for rambling and all the non-sense just really looking for an answer as I have started projects and both engines and ditched both and really want to set in my decision on an engine (also on a less serious note, does ue4 blueprints even count as programming?not that it matters because we are all just making games) Thank you for any help or insight you give it all really helps.
