AAA Senior UE4 Programmer - Offering Mentoring!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I wish I could go back in time and talk to myself in the past while I was deciding what to go to school for, while I was going to school, or even just after I got out of school when I was looking for a job. Since I can't do that, I thought it might be nice to try and help someone else. If you've ever been interested in video game programming and want to talk to someone in the industry - I'm here for you. If you have a resume, or a project you want feedback on - I'm here for you. If your looking for a job and need to practice your interview skills - I'm here for you.

(Updated heavily after this point) If your wondering who I am - I've decided the hell with my anonymity - I forgot this is my main account and it shares the name with a ton of my other accounts. My name is Jack Bogaard and I'm a Sr. Gameplay Programmer (though I'm more of a general UE4 programmer) at Studio Wildcard working on Ark. You can find out a lot more about me over on LinkedIn Here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jtb0327/ - Be aware my profile is about a year out of date in some regards, so its not perfect, but it was good enough to get me an interview at Studio Wildcard. I have about 3-4 years experience in the industry, and its not common for someone with only that amount of time to rise to a Sr. Programmer, so I must be doing something right. I'm certainly no master, but I'm good enough I feel good giving those who are new to the industry or who want to break in advice.

Please be aware - I'm not here as a representative of Studio Wildcard and I don't intend on answering any questions about Ark specifically or about Studio Wildcard specifically - I hope you guys can understand why. Those kinds of questions are better answered by our Community Moderator, Cedric, over on twitter.

Thank you guys so much for the engagement on this post. It makes me really happy to see people wanting to take the chance to learn more about the thing I love. I've been a little overwhelmed by the number of questions, but rest assured, I will try to answer every single one. I'm currently writing up a document that I'm going to attach below that includes answers to some FAQs as well as some general advice regarding getting into the industry, resumes, interviews, and ue4 specifically. After that I'll be taking some time to speak with people individually and answer individual questions. If you have a good question, I'd love for you to post it here so everyone can see the answer, but I understand a lot of people want to keep their privacy like I did when I first posted this.

    FAQ Document (WIP): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ytVdhtxeNM5FKDUmZ-iXMqj4AzFjycNLY-fVagnrnS0/edit?usp=sharing

If you want to chat with me privately, please go ahead and schedule a 30 minute appointment with me via this link, then add me on discord - Ender#9959. If none of the times I have work, message me and I'll see if I can make an exception. I have tendinitis and so I'd prefer to chat with people than make it worse be doing more typing (I need to get some dictation software setup...) A lot of people have asked if I want payment for these sessions: No, they are free. I just want the gratification of helping others.

If you would like me to take a look at your resume, please have a version of it properly formatted in google docs so we can look at it together. A lot of people have PDFs, but don't realize a lot recruitment companies use software to sift through resumes that aren't able to parse text from a PDF. Also please make sure your resume can be read if printed gray-scale, is 1 page front and back filled as best you can, and has as little "dead" space as possible. A single column layout is preferred, but not required.

Becoming a Game Developer and Creativity

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:20 AM PDT

What are the steps to take if I want to become a developer? I am starting to learn C++ (as I've heard that its the language to know if you want to become one). I was thinking about making a 2d shooter like Metal Slug or something down the line for the PC or PS5, but I don't know where or how to start. I don't know if I am creative enough to do something like this. I'm not the best drawer so I don't know if I can make character models and stuff. Do you have any tips on how to become more creative?

I live in the NYC area and was wondering if there were any game studios in the area (like Naughty Dog or something) that I can intern at (how much do I need to know before I can intern?)

Triangular Grids - there are almost no games that use it. Only hex and square grids. Have you heard of any games using triangles, do you have experience of playing/developing these?

Building a basic FPS game concept in three.js

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:57 AM PDT

I'm interested in learning Three.js. I already have a solid understanding of JavaScript. I haven't learnt three.js and I've never built a project with it before.

How long would it take to develop a simple game with FPS controls? I just want to create a basic project where the user can walk and look around on an empty plane, no real game objectives.

    Thanks

    Portfolio VS Interview Skills

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:33 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently graduated from university with a degree in Computer Games Programming (BSc) with first-class honours and am now looking for my first job in the industry.

I was just wondering, in terms of landing a job, is it more beneficial for me to put my time into creating more of my own games for my portfolio (I am currently working on a twin-stick shooter using Unity), or is it better to study more practical interview skills such as data structures and algorithm questions, which seem to be asked a lot in an interview scenario.

If anyone could help me out with any tips on how to ace programming interviews or any source material to interview-style questions it would be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

Can we use ANNs to generate music matching the action on screen?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I.e. I think the future video games will have AI DJ component as part of the narrator, and it will add dynamic music to your dwarf fortress. Think dungeon getting flooded and there is something similar to Saint-Saens's Aquarium playing.

Should Steam hardware & software surveys be taken into consideration?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 08:41 AM PDT

Hello. While I'm working on my project I've been building little demos to check how it runs on different computers. The problem is the computers I'm running the demos on are just from family and friends, so they're all very very old laptops/desktops so I'm not sure if I can judge how my game runs based on them. That's why I've been looking at the "Steam Hardware & Software Surveys". So my question is should the results from these surveys be taken into consideration when optimizing?

Here is a link to this month's survey if anyone is interested: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

How did gba era sprites work?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 11:47 AM PDT

    https://www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy_gbc/dwmons2/sheet/49611/

Almost all these sprites seem to be roughly the same size (I think 16x16), but then we have the huge dude on the right -- is there a limit to gba sprite size?
