About blob file storage for dynamic website Posted: 06 Jul 2020 06:25 AM PDT Hey, I'm developing a dynamic website in React.js with a REST API that talks to a postgres relational database. The majority of data being handled is plaintext, however I now also need to support user-generated content in the form of images and audiofiles. I don't think storing blobs in an RDB is a good idea, so I'm curious what else I can do? Are there any services for hosting files? For more context, there are basically three types of files that need to be stored:
Speed of retrieving data for 2) and 3) is not a big concern, since they can mostly be preloaded while the user is using the app. EDIT: I have reconsidered my data usage a bit, and realize that a lot of the data will be exclusively accessed by the uploader. I'm now thinking that it might be optimal to run a local database for all users in addition to the cloud database for shared/public data. I imagine this'll be fine for the desktop app (electron) and mobile app, though I'm not sure if this is possible for the web app? Localstorage is fairly limited isn't it? Average size of data stored for each user should average to about 100mb I think [link] [comments]
Resources to become a stronger front end dev? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 11:08 AM PDT Hi friends! I'm a full stack dev, but my strength definitely lies in the back end. My boss has asked us to set goals for the upcoming quarter, and I said that I want to become a stronger/better front end dev so that I'm a stronger full stack overall. This includes reading 5 articles, attending 3 webinars or courses, and reading a book. Does anyone have any recommendations for resources to continue my front end education? [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:38 PM PDT Long story short, I changed careers to a Front End Dev from a completely unrelated field two years ago. I had an amazing job as a React developer but was unfortunately let go because the company I was working for was one of the large dating apps and they took huge revenue losses due to COVID and let go of a bunch of people. Being the least experienced person on my team I was naturally on the chopping block. I love FED but the job market is dead here in Toronto right now. I am thinking about picking up something new like maybe PHP and possibly WordPress and exploring that space. I know the pay isn't great but being unemployed is even worse. Anyway I guess I am just looking for recommendations. Stay on my current track and continue to improve my skill set and apply for jobs, learn some new tech and try that, or possibly freelance. Thanks in advance. I am very frustrated by this situation and appreciate any help. EDIT: Node seems like a possible avenue also since I already know JS pretty well [link] [comments]

how to hide streaming files from dev tools? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:41 PM PDT How do streaming websites hide their media files from being accessed in chrome's developer tools? Some sites you can open dev tools and see the direct link to the current file and download it directly. But on Spotify this is not possible. What is the setup behind this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:30 PM PDT Hey folks, We just changed our company's domain name and launched a new website at the new domain. We want to redirect visitors from the old site to the new site and avoid SSL warnings in browsers. What's the best way to accomplish this? [link] [comments]
About to create a meta guide for junior devs Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:52 PM PDT Hi, I'm planning to build a course for junior front-end developers. I've noticed a trend with junior colleagues where a lot of their uncertainty comes from not understanding WHY we use some tool and HOW they actually work. My thinking is that by building a simple app in native Javascript and then in React would help in highlighting the pain points of why such technologies exist in the first place. It would include a dive into DOM and a bit of history of the web. I'd finish it off by implementing a rudimentary react clone (in <150 lines of code) to demonstrate how it works and use that once again to recreate the original app. I'd like to remove some of the magic out of the tech stack, peel back the curtain to show the wizard behind. This should help the newcomers into FE overcome some of that imposter syndrome and give them enough meta knowledge to continue on their path to senior devs. I feel like understanding the wider context is paramount for the growth of an engineer into a proper craftsman. I'm picking React because I'm most experienced with it, but the crux of what I'm trying to show is applicable for most of today's frameworks/libs. It's a bit meta, supplementing the plethora of tutorials and courses that get newcomers up to speed to build stuff while glazing over the motivation for why. Would you be interested in that type of content? Can you think of some must-haves that would help you or would have helped you on your journey? [link] [comments]
Is it worth the time / even possible to sell websites ? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT Hello everyone I hope to be in the right place to ask this question, I read the rules but if I'm wrong I will remove my post. So lately I've been looking for a way to make money by using my (little) knowledge on webdev and I stumbled upon a video talking about selling websites. Sadly I lost the vid and I can't seem to find people talking about it that are in my situation and that are not doing an ad for Wix. In the vid they seemed to say that their method was to do a website for someone, then call them and ask if they wanted to buy it and then sometime they would sell it for a good price. So I thought I could ask here this question : is it viable for a student to do websites for little businesses and try to sell them ? Or is it a waste of time ? Thanks in advance for the answers :) Ps : my knowledge can be resume to 2 years of learning programming but I already done a website for a town hall [link] [comments]
Building an Android App for a WordPress website - Which is the safe way to do so? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 05:23 AM PDT About 3 years ago I built a simple wordpress website using a free wordpress.org theme for a tour guide who organized tours in my region. He has been blogging about tourist places in the area and other activities - the site has about 900 posts today. The posts have text, photos and embedded YouTube videos. He now wants to build an app for this that will have a home page with details about him and below that a list of categories with images for each. Clicking on them should open the post lists. A simple app with minimal design and more focus on the content. Googling this shows me a number of one-click app generator sites where you enter the URL and it generates an APK file or some in the form of a wordpress plugin. They sure look good but I am a bit apprehensive since they generate similar looking APPS which I think might violate Google Play store rules. From what I read google is quick to ban such apps permanently without giving them a chance to explain. I don't want to be caught up in that mess. So considering all that which is a good and google-safe way to build this app? OR should I just skip all these easy generator methods and custom build this app by hiring a developer? Best platform for hosting Java web app? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:54 PM PDT Hi everyone! I am a student looking to deploy my first Java project on the web permanently. For class, we used Heroku to deploy our projects, but I am not sure how scalable Heroku is. I was looking into Azure or AWS, and I am wondering if anyone has any advice over which to choose based on easiness of use, cost, and scalability. Thank you so much! [link] [comments]

Looking for a headless CMS that supports self hosting static assets. Posted: 06 Jul 2020 06:38 AM PDT This is a newbie question, I'm sure, but I'm new to the world of JAMStack and I can't find anything out there that explicitly says that what I'm asking for is possible. I work for a company that's interested in moving their sites to a headless CMS. The one issue I'm looking into as I shop around is that our CTO insists that our static files be served from our own servers and not a platform like Netlify or Heroku. Are there any headless CMS platforms that would allow us to serve our sites from our own server? It's fine if the CMS itself is a hosted SaaS like Contentful or Prismic.io. We'd just like to serve the actual site itself from our own machines. Edit: Our goal would be to auto publish new posts or changes made by our content creators. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT Hi Guys, I'm a software engineer from another domain(embedded) who is just starting to do some webdev work. I know how to program but I don't know much about web development. I spent a few hours researching this without any solid leads so I thought I'd ask here. I'm not even sure if this is possible. Here is what I want to do: I want to use the IDE's(IntelliJ) built in debugger to connect to and debug my app while it's running in the browser. Further, I want to debug the app after it has been bundled/trans-piled with a tool like Browserify, Webpack or Parcel. (I firmly believe in debugging as close to your deployment environment as possible). The code is written in a mixture of ES6 and TS, so I definitely need a bundler. I'm still not sure which one is right for my needs though. I am kind of gravitating towards parcel because of the 'zero-config' aspect. I have been able to successfully bundle and deploy my app, I'm just not able to connect my debugger. I have been producing "map" files for all my bundles. It simply skips all of my breakpoints each time I launch the debug configuration. I have also been able to successfully attach my IDE's debugger to an app that is not bundled. I am using IntelliJ BTW. I'm not sure I fully understand the "Remote URL" portion of the Debug Configuration either. Can someone point me in the correct direction? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:47 PM PDT I have the code below. My desired outcome is exactly how it is in jsfiddle: works perfectly! In my browser, I get these two errors that differentiate it: code: http://jsfiddle.net/pbvwjL94/1/ ```` GET http://localhost/favicon.ico 404 (Not Found) realjs.js:236 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'style' of null at showForm (realjs.js:236) at HTMLSelectElement.onchange (testwriting.php:57) ```` In my browser, the writing sections work perfectly and the reading section works when I choose science. However, the error still appears. The other sections just do not work. I know it is a lot of code but I have been scouring the web for answers for so long and nobody has been able to help me. I really need it guys Thanks [link] [comments]

I've just been given my first job Posted: 06 Jul 2020 09:27 AM PDT Today i've been given my first job in web development. My client wants me to do a simple presentation website for his kindergarten plus a private area with login access where parents can track the day of their children and can interact with teachers. I have a question for you: how much should i ask for the whole project? I know this is not a simple task to begin with web development but i want to try my best (also i have plenty of time to deliver it). [link] [comments]
Does anyone use Satellite internet? Do you think it could support dev work? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 04:28 PM PDT Hi everyone! I am moving across the country in two weeks for my fiance's new job. We found a really a great rental situation, but it only has satellite internet. I'm pretty concerned about it since I telework 24/7. Just curious to know if there are any other developers out there who are able to complete their job with satellite internet. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jul 2020 08:55 AM PDT I haven't done this before and it looks like this may be browser dependent or otherwise varies from client to client. Does anyone know a reliable way to create a button that creates a PDF from on page elements and prompts users to save it instead of opening a print dialog? [link] [comments]
How 'in-sync' is linux epoch time across systems? Posted: 06 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT We are essentially trying to start a stopwatch on one "host" computer, send up the start-time in epoch time to the database, and then have clients (angular app) read the epoch time, do the subtraction to determine the current time on the clock and run its own internal clock tick-tick-tick from there via javascript. Margin of error is plus or minus ten seconds to be acceptable. Boss insists that if we do that, the users computers will be wildly inaccurate because the clocks between the users machine and our server will not be in sync in regards to how long ago "0" was in linux epoch time. I think he's batshit crazy and thats literally the point of using epoch time. It doesnt care about your system clock, because it knows how many seconds ago Jan 1 1970 was. He says the clocks could be so out of sync that it could appear to the user that our stopwatch is like a negative number or something. He says we should have an API that gets the current time for the server, compare that to the current time on the client machine, get the difference between the two, and adjust the stopwatch time accordingly. This seems ... dumb to me. Whose right? [link] [comments]
Taking an Angular Job, how much will my Angular 2 experience translate to AngularJS Posted: 06 Jul 2020 12:27 PM PDT Hello, I Just took a Job Offer for a Full Stack Dev role, I've been learning Angular 2+ for the past year. This Job said I would be developing new features in Angular 9, but also migrating/maintaining old AngularJS. I've never actually worked with Angular JS, how much studying should I do? is there anything vastly different other than JS/Typescript? [link] [comments] |
