    What have you been working on recently? [June 27, 2020]

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:04 AM PDT

    What have you been working on recently? Feel free to share updates on projects you're working on, brag about any major milestones you've hit, grouse about a challenge you've ran into recently... Any sort of "progress report" is fair game!

    A few requests:

    1. If possible, include a link to your source code when sharing a project update. That way, others can learn from your work!

    2. If you've shared something, try commenting on at least one other update -- ask a question, give feedback, compliment something cool... We encourage discussion!

    3. If you don't consider yourself to be a beginner, include about how many years of experience you have.

    This thread will remained stickied over the weekend. Link to past threads here.

    My first contribution to an open source project

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:22 PM PDT

    I'm learning Web development for about 6 months now. Yesterday I came around a typo in the tutorial I was learning from. It's an open-source project so corrected it and made a pull request. It was accepted and successfully merged. I'm feeling so proud of myself. This feeling of contributing to an open-source project is amazing!

    I am lost while trying to fullstack develop a website

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 06:56 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

    I am new to developing a website from scratch fullstack. I have knowledge in HTML, CSS, JS, Python, but I do not know how to use this knowledge to create a fullstack website. Right now, I have a completely finished web page. On the website, I have two features: a simply survey users can fill out and a list of items (say, shopping list, for example) that displays data from a database. The problem I have is that I do not know how to connect backend to frontend. I am using angular for my web framework, but what do I do next? I am so lost. I want to store the data filled using the survey, and I also want to keep other data to display onto my website. I am lost. Django? REST API? JQuery? SQL? Please help. This post may sound very vague and confusing, I just need help with fullstack web development.

    tl;dr: please help with outlining fullstack web development, and how to connect the backend and frontend

    Thank you!

    Understand and not just memorizing.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:56 PM PDT

    Hi folks.
    I consider myself as a beginner in programming, specifically in Python language.

    I've been stuck in the "Tutorial Hell" for about 5 months until I realized that all I need to do is understand instead just memorizing what Python's tools I should use in certain kinds of problems.

    I downloaded Introduction to Computation and Programming by Jon Guttag and started to study everything I knew again, from scratch, from Types of Data to Functions and OOP and I caught everything in that book having the mindset of "Understanding" not Memorizing.

    Hope you're great guys!

    A little help, please . How to get over this coding anxiety?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:17 AM PDT

    I'm entering into 4th now of cs grad and most prolly placements are gonna start as early as possible according to our training and placement cell but still the college is not clear about this whole situation cause the pandemic has affected everything.

    So to prepare for my placements, I have to start coding and solving problems. I have intermediate knowledge in c, c++, python. But the main problem is I can't solve these problems. Lost the touch of solving them. Everyday I see one problem, and think, "oh man, that's difficult one", and I don't even try to solve it out of just sheer fear that I will fail to do so. This coding anxiety is real. I even started to solve easy sql problems so as to feel good about myself, to keep me motivated.

    And tbh I am depressed and really worried. I don't know when our placements gonna start, they just told us to be prepared for anything and I'm very afraid. I can't tell my parents, no. They hope a lot from me.

    So to distract myself, I listen to music, watch series, just lie in bed for countless hours. I fear to even start solving the problems. And I know if I don't start trying now , I would be creating a hell lot of problems in near future and this thought makes me more anxious and worried. This has been going on for weeks now and I am slowly slipping into utter despair and apathy. I honestly cry at night thinking how I am alone, not able to do anything. I pity myself.

    A little help for this lost soul would be much appreciated, thank you.

    How do you create a user interface for something developed with Java or Python?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

    For instance, I have code written on IntelliJ that allows users to input the amount of points scored and allowed by a football team for each game, and then methods will spit out point differential, average points per game, assign a grade, perform a binary search, etc.

    If I wanted to put this on a website, or create a program with a user interface, how will this be done? Will HTML or some other front end oriented language be used to design this interface, while the Java code runs behind the scenes?

    I've always wondered how programs go from IntelliJ and Eclipse to an actual, commercial, user friendly website or program like Microsoft Word or a web browser.

    What would look in a fresh CS or IT graduate?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:14 PM PDT

    Title error -> **What would you look for...

    If you are hiring for a junior role, or even interviewing someone for an intern position, what are the major concepts someone should be well versed in? If some's presenting a personal project, what would you be looking for in the effort that went in creating it?

    Are language diversity and GitHub proficiency a must in the field?

    Best online courses for a time-rich cash-poor learner?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:33 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    I've read the 'New? Read me...' & FAQ posts and have a good idea of what language(s) I'd like to learn, but I'm a little overwhelmed with the various online resources available and don't want to sign up for something that ends up being unsuitable, especially if it costs money.

    I intend to start off on the HTML/CSS/Javascript route and eventually on to Python and/or C#. I do have some relevant experience but am absolutely treating this as starting from scratch.

    I'm looking for structured courses that don't limit progress to x hours per week, and don't cost too much. I'm currently unemployed and living with family in full shielding due to Covid, so I can dedicate a huge amount of time to learning but don't have much money to spend and can only consider fully online courses.

    I've looked at Udacity and CodeCademy so far. It seems like Udacity would be both too expensive and limit me to x hours per week. I could afford the CodeCademy Pro membership but it's not entirely clear if their courses would also limit my time invested. My number one priority is being able to dump as much time as needed into learning as quickly as possible. It also seems like CodeCademy might be pretty weak in terms of actually testing/applying the knowledge, although I am happy to come up with my own projects to do this if the lessons are good enough on the theory side.

    I'd be incredibly grateful if anyone has any feedback on either of these options (or any other relevant suggestions).

    EDIT: MASSIVE thanks for the responses from everyone, I half expected this to get deleted for being too FAQish so thanks for the great suggestions. I started out not being able to find anything that quite fit what I was looking for and now I've got several suitable paths to choose from, what an awesome community!

    Google Sheets importxml function only works 3/4 times

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:46 PM PDT

    So I was building my personal portfolio tracker and decided to scrape dividends and yields from yahoo finance. Am not super savvy with programming (otherwise wouldn't be here) but I really can't seem to figure out why some weird things happen.The spreadsheet looks something like this

    Ticker Yahoo finance link Scraped data Clean data xpath
    https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/ //*[@id="quote-summary"]/div[2]/table/tbody/tr[6]/td[2]
    GOOGL =CONCAT($B$2,A3) =IMPORTXML(B3,$E$2) =REGEXEXTRACT(C3,"((.*))")
    BLK =CONCAT($B$2,A4) =IMPORTXML(B4,$E$2) =REGEXEXTRACT(C4,"((.*))")
    ABBV =CONCAT($B$2,A5) =IMPORTXML(B5,$E$2) =REGEXEXTRACT(C5,"((.*))")
    AFL =CONCAT($B$2,A6) =IMPORTXML(B6,$E$2) =REGEXEXTRACT(C6,"((.*))")

    the form of scrapped data should be xx.xx (xx.xx%) with x a number or N/A (N/A) in the case of no dividend or cut dividend. So in clean data I would expect to have N/A for GOOGL, and some x.xx% for BLK, ABBV and AFL but for GOOGL and BLK I get #N/A (on hover it says error Imported content is empty) and for ABBV it just keeps loading and only AFL shows the correct x.xx%. A couple of days ago BLK and ABBV still worked so maybe it's just too many importxml functions? (41 currently, might increase). I should have done something right as it works for most tickers but not for all of them, how should I fix this?

    Boot USB won't work?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:38 PM PDT

    Sorry if debugging isn't the right flair, joined the community just to make this post (for now).

    Here is a quick timeline of what should've been a very simple task but simply has not been.

    > Download latest Ubuntu

    > Use Rufus Portable to make an SDXC into a boot

    > It is not recognized on ASUS X205T

    > It is recognized on HP 15-ce0xx but defaults to Windows 10

    > Use Rufus to make a USB into a boot

    > It is recognized on HP, default

    > Download Linux Mint 18.2 32-bit (can provide exact link if needed)

    > Overwrite USB to boot with this

    > Recognized on both, both default

    Literally where did I go wrong. Is it Rufus? Also I am sleeping after I post this before I get Super Cranky, so supplemental information may not come until tomorrow. Thanks so much in advance!

    Making an email template for iPhone

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:52 PM PDT

    I wanted to know how I would make an email template for iPhone that would automatically open the mail app and allow and have the prewritten email.

    I've figured out how to make the prewritten email using the notes app but I am not sure how I would make that a link so I could distribute to other people. Would I have to transfer from using my notes app to coding in html? I'm really unsure because I have never done anything with iPhones or even html yet.

    I'm a doctor looking at learning about computers/programming to help broaden my understanding of hospital tech systems. I guess my goal is to be able to holistically comprehend how programs work for things like imaging, communication and patient data storage. Does anyone have any suggestions for a programming language to start with?

    Is there a looping or a pointer problem in my C program?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:10 PM PDT

    Hey reddit people. So I was trying to solve this intriguing question: question And I tried with this code:

    include <stdio.h>

    typedef struct{ int house_nmbr; int zip_code; char st_name[51]; char country_name[51]; }ADDRESS; typedef struct{ char name[51]; ADDRESS billing, shipping; }CLIENT; ADDRESS READ_ADDRESS(){ ADDRESS *AD; printf("Enter the house number.\n"); scanf("%d", &AD->house_nmbr); printf("Enter the street name.\n"); gets(AD->st_name); printf("Enter the zip code.\n"); scanf("%d", &AD->zip_code); printf("Enter the country.\n"); gets(AD->country_name); return *AD; } void READ_CLIENT(CLIENT *c){ ADDRESS A1, A2; printf("Enter the following information about your billing address:\n"); A1=READ_ADDRESS(); printf("Enter the following information about your shipping address:\n"); A2=READ_ADDRESS(); printf("Enter your name,\n"); gets(c->name); c->billing=A1; c->shipping=A2; } void FILL_CLIENTS(CLIENT C[50]){ int i; for(i=0; i<50; i++) READ_CLIENT(&C[i]); } void FIND_CLIENTS(CLIENT C[50], int d){ int i; printf("The clients with this zip code: %d have the following:\n", d); for(i=0; i<50; i++){ if(C[i].billing.zip_code==d || C[i].shipping.zip_code==d){ printf("Name: %s.", C[i].name); printf("Billing address:\tHouse number:%d\tStreet name:%s\tZip code:%d\tCountry:%s\t\n", C[i].billing.house_nmbr, C[i].billing.st_name, C[i].billing.zip_code, C[i].billing.country_name); printf("Shipping address:\tHouse number:%d\tStreet name:%s\tZip code:%d\tCountry:%s\t\n", C[i].shipping.house_nmbr, C[i].shipping.st_name, C[i].shipping.zip_code, C[i].shipping.country_name); } } } int main(){ int d; CLIENT C[50]; FILL_CLIENTS(C); printf("Enter the zip code you want to find the clients holding:\n"); scanf("%d", &d); FIND_CLIENTS(C, d); return 0; }

    However it showed me this on the screen whenever I run it: error

    Can someone please review my code and tell me where I did it wrong? Im mostly a beginner to pointers and functions so I think I've messed it up with them but I'm not sure where..

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:09 PM PDT

    Hi guys, I just finished a 3-hour course learning web development (HTML and CSS) on youtube by Daniel Scott (Bring Your Own Laptop). I'm a realtor so I'm building a website as a landing page to promote myself. He taught me on making websites as well as hosting them.

    I was told that I should learn HTML, CSS, and Javascript when developing a website. Should I start learning how to use Adobe xd, so I can start designing a mockup of my website?

    Looking to set up equipment tracking database with QR code

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 07:01 PM PDT

    This is an engineering company, we are thinking of setting up a database to keep track of equipment. is it possible to do the below, if yes how:

    Assign each piece of equipment we own a QR code that we can scan with cell phones when we take on jobs. Then we know where things are.

    When the user scans a piece of equipment's QR code, they have 2 options.

    1. Add an entry to the database with the following fields: name, job id, date, location. This will append their info to the database, keeping the previous log
    2. View all history for the item scanned in chronological order.

    Looking to make an extremely barebones and ugly app which does nothing but work. Graphical user interface does not matter at all. The app should be simple and ugly.

    Why is there a string library in C++

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:21 PM PDT

    This is a stupid question, but it isn't explained in the tutorials I was watching and I tried initializing a string variable without including the string library, however, the string variable still works. I was wondering what is the point of including a string library in C++, when it does not give you any error by initializing a string

    Functional Programming Paradigm vs Declarative Programming Paradigm

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:11 PM PDT

    What's the difference between the two? I thought functional was a sub set of declarative but after reading some sources I think both are separate. I see both terms being used interchangeably. Does functional include some capabilities of declarative, but then what makes declarative totally different?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:03 PM PDT

    I have used this term throughout my education, but I have never used a formal definition associated with it. What makes a data structure then? Is a data structure something that has structure inside in how it contains the data and can manipulate it? Is that the main way to define it?

    Coding Anxiety - Always Straying

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:49 AM PDT

    Good afternoon learnprogramming,

    I cannot decide on which langauge to learn, I get about a quarter of the way into a course on udemy and I think well maybe it would be better if I learned java, or maybe it would be better if I learned javascript. I would really like to learn some scripting and automation which of course would be python. Somewhere down the road I just relapse and say well i didnt look fully into ruby to see the capabilities or maybe php will be able to run this website better and then before you know it I'm back at square 1. I did the search and I found stuff about pick the project you want to do and not the language. I get that, but multiple languages and do projects I want to do. I also read that a programmer is a problem solver and languages are just tools. I feel like I'm taking a wrench and using it as a hammer job to be honest. How do you stay focused on one and not think think about another langauge?

    My background is a network analyst if it matters. I'm looking to transition out of the replaceable scene if you understand. In Florida, every you look is managed services and I feel like another job in that area will be contract or be outsourced to managed services.

    I like the idea of security, now I've hacked 13 boxes on my own which I'm damn proud of, meaning without looking through walkthroughs. I've really done about 50 but those ones I "cheated" I guess. Finding a career in security isn't really going to happen for me. I do have my security+ but everywhere you look is 5 years this 8 years that... i was watching heaths course on udemy which he says you dont need to know python to he good at this, I hear in my head, "You need to stop here and learn Python."

    How does one overcome this problem of always thinking something is better than the other?

    Thank you reddit.

    [Help] Classes, Objects, and Inheritance. Having issues accessing variables in a separate class in Python.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:32 PM PDT

    Hello! So I am teaching myself Python and going through a list of projects and trying my best to implement what I learn. I learned about classes, objects, and inheritance recently and so I'm trying to make a turn based python game (just a super simple command line kind) and implement those things. The tutorials I've watched only really explain like the basics and I know that if I have class Student and I give it variable like age, gpa, etc I can pass those by doing something like s = Student(19, 4.5) right. Like I get that but I guess I'm just a bit confused when it comes to my program so I'll paste my code below.

    Also, please note that the code is not finished or comprehensive! I have so much to add and adjust. I just have been trying to make sure that what I have so far even runs (without using classes, the code DOES run but now that its in classes it doesn't). I'll be adding exceptions, error handling, etc once I can get this to run. It runs through the display_game() function but returns an error user_health isn't defined. I tried putting those variables within the Game class, outside of all classes, at the bottom and passing the values through instead of assigning them in the init function but none of those worked.

    import random class Mechanics():

     def __init__(self): self.user_health = 100 self.user_move = input() self.computer_health = 100 self.computer_move = random.randint(1,3) class Game(Mechanics): def display_game(): print('Welcome to the game. You will be playing against the computer in a turn based game that affects your health. The winner will blah blah') play_game = input('Are you ready to play?\n Enter Y for yes and N to exit game.\n') if play_game == str('Y'): print('Lets begin! ') else: exit() def display_choices(): choices = ['1 = ATTACK', '2 = HEAL', '3 = BLOCK'] print('Please choose your move: ' + str(choices)) def get_usermove(): while user_health > 0: if user_move == str(1): is_successful = random.randint(1, 2) if is_successful == 1: print('You chose ATTACK! Your attack was successful, your opponent lost 20 points') computer_health -= 20 else: print('You chose ATTACK! Your attack failed and your opponent was unaffected.') elif user_move == str(2): print('You chose HEAL. You gained 10 points.') else: print('You chose BLOCK. Nothing happened.') print('Test') def get_compmove(): while computer_health > 0: if computer_move == 1: is_successful = random.randint(1, 2) if is_successful == 1: print('Computer chose ATTACK! Their attack was successful, you lost 20 points') user_health -= 20 else: print('Computer chose ATTACK! Their attack failed and you were unaffected.') elif computer_move == 2: print('Computer chose HEAL. They gained 10 points') else: print('Computer chose BLOCK. Nothing happened. ') print('Test 2') display_game() display_choices() get_usermove() get_compmove()

    I took out the parameter self on all of my functions. When I run my program it says I'm missing the positional argument "self" and while I get what that means, I don't get how to apply it to my program. I also tried changing all user/computer_health etc to self.user_health which did not work because self isn't defined even when I use it as a parameter. I don't understand lol. Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5?

    Also, is there a way to make my program run without calling all of the functions within Game()?

    Not running code during Interviews

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:21 PM PDT

    I know many companies don't allow you to compile your code when you are done solving a question. For example, on phone technicals for Goog, you are writing your code on a doc. I was wondering if anyone knew why? And if after the interview, would the interviewer then run the code themselves to make sure if it was indeed correct.
