How do you balance your time between game dev and actually playing games?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:37 AM PDT

I haven't played a game in over two months. I have very little free time and I have been using it to work on my game.

However I feel that this may "disconnect" me from what actual things I like in game's, I fear my game ends with no souls.

Is this a common problem? How do you handle it?

I recently built a very minimalist JavaScript game engine - interested in feedback!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:56 AM PDT

It's called 24a2. My hope is that it enables people to build games quickly and simply by removing a lot of the things you usually have to think about. All you have is a 24x24 grid of dots. You can set the colour of each dot, and you can read keyboard and mouse input.

Here's an implementation of Snake, implemented in under 200 lines of code:

I've created a small website for it, which contains documentation, getting started info and a tutorial https://24a2.routley.io/ - please let me know what you think! If you're interested, you can also find the source code here https://github.com/jamesroutley/24a2

Personal Finance + Gaming App Idea

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I'm exploring the potential crossover between personal finance & gaming. Even with all of the options we have, managing your money still sucks.

I've been looking into creating a mobile app where users can gamify their money, learn to invest and manage their assets with in-app features.

Some ideas we think are interesting are: replicating real-world price data, time-skip features, build your own business, & daily games to help inform decision making.

What are your thoughts on this general idea? What would you want to see in a game like this / what would make you play?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

What kind of Math do I need to learn?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:45 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Sorry for my bad English :(

I'm currently struggling with Math, like a lot. I couldn't calculate a simple vector problem. I'm looking for a roadmap to learn Math for video games.

Currently, I tried to find the old game dev thread that contains a list of Math that I need to learn at Khan Academy, but I couldn't find it again.

So, which order I need to learn at Khan Academy?

I'm currently learning Basic Geometry and Pre-Algebra after that I will try to learn Trigonometry

Are ESRB and PEGI mandatory for releasing games?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 09:30 AM PDT

Simple question, but I'm curious and couldn't find a clear answer on google. As far as I am aware, ESRB and PEGI ratings (and I think there's other ones in Germany and Australia) are not given for free, so devs have to pay a fee. However my understanding is that these ratings are mandatory for boxed releases but not for digitals? Is that how it works?

Best books/resources to help my niece get into making games?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Hey there everyone! So like the title says, my 13 year-old niece has displayed an interest in making games. She lives a few states away from me, so I don't see or talk to her as much as I'd like. However, when I was talking to her a few weeks ago during her birthday, she mentioned that she would be going to a summer program where she would get the chance to learn about game design and possibly make her own game. My question is what would be the best books on game design that would help develop her interest in this field? I considered "Game Feel" by Steve Swink, but I thought it might be a bit too advanced for a beginner like her. What books and/or resources would you guys recommend I could get her as a late birthday gift?

What's the point of publishing poorly made blatant ripoffs in commercial platforms?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 08:59 AM PDT

Today I run into this game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1355570/Dungeons__Guns/

It's not even trying to hide the fact that it's just a dollarstore Enter the Gungeon: the aesthetics of the rooms, the projectiles, some of the enemies, mechanics and the logo LOL. It just looks like it was little fan game made in flash, but the thing is, it's being released on Steam, doesn't this involve some sort of investment?

Do these games make any profit? Or is there any benefit to publishing something like this on Steam?

How can I be sure that people will play my game and it wont be ignored?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:43 PM PDT

I am making a 2d indie game in godot and right now its a 2d adventure platformer game. It dont have anything really special from other games. I am concerned that my game will be ignored when its finally release. I know I should advertise it on Twitter, but is that really the best way? How did big indie games like undertale get so many people to play them? Should I add something to set it apart or something? Not having anyone play my game or very small would be very devastating to me.

Is it ok to use games assets/files for a game PodCast? And if so, how to do it? [Off-topic/PodCast]

    Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:48 AM PDT

Firstly, I read the rules and I believe I am not breaking anything, even if it is kinda off-topic. I couldn't think of any other better comunity to ask this.

Secondly, thanks for taking your time to read this.

A friend and I have a PodCast project (in Portuguese) where we discuss about games. It is still under development, but we actualy think its gonna see sunlight. In one of the episodes that we recorded so far we discuss about Underhand, an amazing game for android. We wanted to add one small audio of the game's radio, where it reacts to the players action, to illustrate it.

    My questions would be:

    1) Doing this is likely legal/ok, right?

    2) Is there an okay way to take this recording that does not involve playing the game and recording what is on screen? Is there a way to explore the game's files and extract that audio file from it?
