My 10 year game development journey

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:17 AM PDT

Hi! I wrote a long article on my experiences as a game developer for the past 10 years - from making flash games, to mobile, to finally Steam. I was going to post the whole thing here but didn't realize there was a 20 image limit on posts... and the article has 78 images, so I hosted it on my site instead.

    Here is the link: http://nicotuason.com/10years.html

Thanks and I hope it makes for a good read!

Unity has become an absolute nightmare

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 08:13 PM PDT

I've been a regular Unity user since I was a young teen just playing around, I'd say I became a pretty serious user around Unity 5/Unity 2017. It was then I jot a job in the software industry and I've mostly been away from it(discounting a project a did for work using unity 2017 or 2018 I can't remember exactly)

I remember I loved how easy it was to use, to prototype games and get things going, thought it might be fun to get back into it and make some games.

To my surprise Unity has become an awful mess.

    • Multiple versions, none of which are considered the "core" release

    • Official tutorials and documentation are all outdated. Things change so often their own team can't keep up

    • What is this mess of a package management system? Now I have three confusing ways to install new libraries

    • Want to start a vr project? Good luck. OpenVR not supported anymore. Official documentation says to use VRTK, a package unofficially abandoned for 9 months. Now pitching us UnityXR, unfinished and zero documentation and no support for Vive

    • Abandoned networking

    • Another new input system? And surprise! Little to no documentation, but the old system is already not supported

I know most people on the subreddit use Unity, but you have to admit this is an insane way to manage software.

Honestly, it's almost more viable to create your own engine so you don't have to deal with this mess. I think I'm going to go with Unreal for the next year until Unity can figure itself out. It sucks because I'm a huge fan of Unity they just seem to be stuck in this wierd disorganized limbo.

    What do you guys think?

Are armor systems in 2D games just modular sprite sheets?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:27 AM PDT

I'm getting to the point of making an armor system in my game, but I'm a little confused. I have been animating in photoshop so far. To equip armor, do I basically just use scripts to replace the body of my character in the sprite sheets with armor?

How can I convert the FPS Microgame from Unity 3D to work on Android?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 10:20 AM PDT

I am really new, and I would like try and make a game that uses the FPS Microgame tutorial as a starting point.

My goal is to put my game on the play store. So I am wondering if anyone knows how I could convert the keyboard controls into touchscreen joystick commands?

Thanks, and have a great day!

What ~free~ low-poly music would you like to see next?

Pre-COVID-19, I released two free albums of "low-poly" video game music, as you might hear in games for the N64 and PS1: https://kentkercher.bandcamp.com

I'm starting to plan for the third album in this series. Do you have any genres you'd like to see represented?

Is a horror game a good first game to make?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 09:42 AM PDT

    Hi,

So a little bit about me, I have been playing around with various game engines for a while now (maybe 7/8 years) but never really finished or published anything.

I am pretty decent at 3D modeling (mostly buildings and none living things) and I know how to program in python and C#. I am also familiar with unreal's blueprint.

So since, like a lot of people right now, I have a lot of free time I was thinking about trying to make a game and actually finish it this time. I don't want to make anything ground breaking, just a little game that can entertain people for a few hours. I probably wouldn't even sell it and just drop it on itch.io

Anyway for that first game I was thinking about making a horror game. I see a lot of indie devs making those types of games and it seems like they are fairly simple to do on the technical side (just basic movement, ability to grab a few objet, a basic AI for the enemy and you have something like slender or the tone of other games some youtubers seem to love).

Do you think that is a good idea for a first game? What difficulties can I expect and if any of you has any tips and tricks to do something decent in that genre.

    Thanks!
