    Interview Take-Home Project Chat API

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 12:49 PM PDT

    I've been asked to build a simple chat API as part of a take home project for an interview. I'm supposed to disregard common features like security, authentication, authorization, and user registration. I won't share the spec here, nor am I asking for help building it. I am curious, about ways to improve upon a super basic API design.

    How would you go "above and beyond" building a chat API? What kind of features/design would impress you if you were on the other end?

    Thanks for the ideas!

    edit: they specifically mentioned that sneaking in "something cool" would be a bonus

    Unable to put inline images using Gatsby advanced blog template

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 03:43 PM PDT

    I am trying to write a blog post using markdown files as this is the easiest thing for me. I am using the Wonism Advanced Blog Starter and have found it to be exactly what I wanted so far, until I tried putting an inline image using ![alt text](/local/path/to/image) and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it work. I have already searched as best as I can and gone through this article from gatsbyjs.org and still nothing. I know the path to my images folder is working because I am using the same image at the top as the header image in the template (as a temporary placeholder).

    So what I have:

    ```md
    title info....
    images: '/local/path/image.png' <---- This works fine, no problems
    Title
    ![alt text](/local/path/image.png') <---- This just shows the alt text with no image ```
    Here's a link to the actual repository and branch that I'm having the issue with and any help would be appreciated. I just need to put inline images in, otherwise I'm going to need to find a different way to do my blog.
    Like I said, I tried everything in the gatsbyjs.org article titled "Working with images in markdown" and nothing worked, so I must have done something wrong.
    Thanks
    To open source or not to open source? That is my question!
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT
    Newbie web "dev" here. I was just watching this documentary on Vue js and learnt how the creator was so good at open source that he got a job offer from google without any interviews. It really inspired me. Now I just know basic html,css,javascript,jquery and I am learning Vue now and looking forward to the backend courses in my bootcamp. So, as a total newbie, is it good to dangle my feet in open source waters? I really like Javascript. But I have no idea how to open source or how to even get started. I want to become a full stack developer and specialize in the frontend. Honestly I like CSS a lot, since I am quite decent at it. One of my mentor is a prime developer at GSAP. Can't really call him a mentor, more of a friend. He has writes articles quite often at css-tricks too. But he is a bit professional and a very busy person, and his mentorship charges are like 25$ per hour. But he still guides me sometimes, of course for free. Now I wan't to know about open source in css/ javascript related frontend fields and how may I learn things to provide some value and where to even get started. All and any advice is welcome. Sorry if I sounded stupid for asking stupid questions, again I am a total newbie, so sorry for asking.
    Is there a (headless) CMS with a page builder / content editor?
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 04:32 AM PDT
    I'm looking for a (headless) CMS with which you can build your websites with Vue and then let your clients change the content of the page through a visual page builder (like Elementor with Wordpress).
    I have seen Storyblok and it looks like that one comes very close to what I'm looking for (visual content editor while being able to code the complete website with Vue), but I think it's quite pricey when you'd use it for smaller clients. Also I'd rather host the whole thing on my own servers instead of having to rely on the service of Storyblok.
    Built a client/api that uses zooms oauth api. Do I store the users access tokens client-side or (my)server-side?
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 02:07 PM PDT
    So I'm building a backend that uses another api for the first time, since zooms oauth2 only talks to another server. I have an issue of the authentication procedure, and I'm worried that if I store a clients auth token on the backend, another users will overwrite it? The auth token has to be sent with every request to zooms servers, and also has to be refreshed for a new token every hour.
    Server is express/node. I've usually used drf in the past, which abstracted away this user authentication stuff, so I'm kind of slogging through this one.
    How to deal with times in different timezones
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 07:44 AM PDT
    Hello,
    I'm not a backend developer. I do mobile development so bear with me if this question is kind of too basic.
    Say I have a platform like Zoom where people can book a time for a meeting/appointment in advance. I live in California and I set the meeting start time to 10 AM. and I send an invite to someone on the east coast. The start time for him would be 1 PM.
    What would be the ideal way to save this date value in a database? With or without the timezone component? (I read that only PostgreSQL has a unique data type for storing timestamps with timezones) So when displaying this date value to each user on the front-end, I can show the times in a localized way.
    Another approach I thought of is, when users sign up, save their timeszones in a separate field. And save the meeting times without any timezone info. And have the front-end fetch both parts and do the date/time calculations on the front-end itself.
    But I'm here to hear input from others who may have experience in this sort of thing than me.
    Thanks!
    Solar.css - Pure CSS Solar System Animation
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 06:53 AM PDT
    Would you choose GSAP over CSS or Vanilla JS animations? How to become a GSAP developer?
    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 08:48 AM PDT
    I have used GSAP a few times and I am completely amazed by the sort of animations that you can do with GSAP especially with SVGs. Do you use GSap or have you ever used Gsap? What are your experiences with it? How can I become a better GSap developer? Where to start?
