What have you been working on recently? [March 14, 2020]

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:04 AM PDT

What have you been working on recently? Feel free to share updates on projects you're working on, brag about any major milestones you've hit, grouse about a challenge you've ran into recently... Any sort of "progress report" is fair game!

    A few requests:

    1. If possible, include a link to your source code when sharing a project update. That way, others can learn from your work!

    2. If you've shared something, try commenting on at least one other update -- ask a question, give feedback, compliment something cool... We encourage discussion!

    3. If you don't consider yourself to be a beginner, include about how many years of experience you have.

This thread will remained stickied over the weekend. Link to past threads here.

Might be worth looking at if you're an affected student (seems like most schools are now).

I wrote a small resource guide for new programmers, "theProgramming.toolkit", to lay out all the tools you'll need to code in one article.

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 07:13 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm the relatively new programmers from a while ago that wrote an article with a stupid name to "prevent common issues we see on the subreddit" or whatever.

I also recently wrote another little guide that packages the most important programming tools I know of in one article. At the very least, it'll save you time. At most, it'll expose weak parts in your workflow.

Feel free to shit on the article, I'll try to add what ya'll recommend.

So, here's a little guide. Inshallah, and stay away from large crowds.

LPT: Write your next task in your source file for tomorrow

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 04:37 PM PDT

Everyday after I commit my changes I write out what my next task is in the source file NOT AS A COMMENT (but you can if you want).

In the morning I always build my code. However because I wrote my task outside of the comment it fails and brings me to the function I was looking at yesterday. I write a very specific comment like steps to reproduce the condition I need to debug and what I suspect the problem is or what the problem ISN'T (or a recommendation for the next task to do). In the morning I don't need to think or get my coffee. Just breathe a few times, let my coffee/tea cool and read what I wrote a few times. I then know exactly what to do and get a jump start on my day.

What is the best way to register for continuous updates from a server in Android?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:56 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub from this question, if there is a better one please point me to it.

I'm trying to find the best way to get continuous updates from a server in Android without polling. There are three scenarios in particular I'm thinking of.

    1. An Uber-like activity which shows the position of the driver on a map with real-time updates
    2. A news feed activity which gets updated when there is new news to show.
    3. A real-time chat app (I think XMPP libraries can be used for this, but not sure if that's the best way)

Would FCM be good for these use cases?

Study abroad program cancelled, looking for online courses

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 05:47 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm a junior in college right now and studying abroad in Thailand. Unfortunately, due to the virus, my study abroad program has been cancelled. So I will likely be stuck in thailand for a while unable to work or take courses....

With that in mind, I now have a ton of free time. I was wondering if anybody had a good set of courses to take? I'm mostly interested in .NET / C# as that is what my internship over the summer will be focusing on, and I already have about a years worth of experience in web development experience with .NET MVC5. I would love to learn more about backend, as well as more about the delivery pipeline / deployment. Also looking to get some experience is AWS or azure, as I built a blog in django as a side project but am having trouble figuring out how to host it. The technologies required for my internship are .NET, Azure, Elasticsearch, Docker, Kubernetes, and SQL.

    I'm open to any recommendations!

Anybody know what Apple is using for this neat scroll effect on the MBP website?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Hey, on Apple's website for the MacBookPro 16inch, there is this really neat scroll down effect that as you scroll down the page, the MBP opens and then the specs are beneath it. I would like to know what is causing this. I inspected the elements and figured out which div this is all happening in, but as a current self taught coder, I am not familiar enough with what's going on to actually figure out what they are using. I can't post a screenshot of the elements, but if you open up your console on the page, I think it's the viewport-animation div that houses this. Any idea how this works?

Am I passionate about Programming or am I Lying to Myself

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 06:04 PM PDT

Okay so Im a cs undergrad and I came from general engineering in first year because the computing modules were my favourite. I really, really enjoy coding, I code for about 3-6 hours every day weather it's college work or my own projects. so the thing is, am I passionate or am I just doing it because it's my course? I know I should be able to answer this but when I associate it to being academia I feel like I'm not doing it for my own leisure even though I get that feeling from it so I'm very confused with myself and don't know how I feel. I want to become a programmer, I want to make cool projects to feel proud of, I think about Programming all of the time, I'm not incredibly good at it. However I'm getting a lot better at a very fast rate but I feel like there's a stigma for being passionate = being exceptionally good at it so that's also a conflicting thought. I don't really have many friends in my course although I'm a very sociable guy, the people in my class just aren't for me and it's a bummer because being in an environment with other people that share an interest is very motivating and enhancing. So I get that I'm going nowhere with this but now that you guys know what my situation is, what do all of you think? Are you passionate? In your workplace can you tell the difference between someone that's there to code and someone that's there for the money? I should also mention the money doesn't outweigh my interest in it, it's just a great bonus but if you invest yourself enough I'm any field, you're bound for success!

C# windows form app how to disable buttons when the form opens

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 05:53 PM PDT

In my program I am opening a child form from the parent form. The child form is supposed to have a few buttons disabled until a certain action occurs. I have not been able to find out how to make a button disabled from the start of the form. So far I have the buttons disabled on the first click of that particular button but that's not really what the problem is asking. Any help is appreciated.

Got an interview! Not sure what to expect

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 11:36 AM PDT

    Hey guys

I've been self-teaching myself development practises for about 6 months now, working on all manner of things from JS/TS to angular, to nodeJS backend applications that use API's and user authentication like JWT all the way to more basic C stuff

I am still far from being competent in this field however and I am fully aware of this as fact, but still I found myself applying where there were open positions, usually for junior devs or straight web development positions

I recently found an open position at a game development company near me for a backend developer and I chucked my resume in on a whim even though I was 100% sure they would turn me down because of my lack of knowledge and experience..

They did, but they also offered me a potential QA position! I have an interview next week and i've been researching the position as much as possible, but I would love love some insight from people who have had this kind of position in the past

From what I can tell, this is mostly a position that involves testing new builds against the current working build, whether using manual testing scripts, or automated testing tools, and documenting the results -- Do QA teams also identify and report game bugs?

What about design level questions, should I refrain from asking them those?

I am pretty passionate about this game in particular and I have questions (More for my own internal curiosity) about certain design decisions made (Example: You can't shoot while falling) and why they were chosen -- Was it to slow the game down? Prevent B-hopping?

I also don't want to overstep my bounds or make people feel like i'm questioning the direction of the game when I'm in a position that doesn't require that kind of thought process

I also wanted to say thanks for this community -- I'm mostly a lurker but I think the outlook, motivation and insight here has helped me immensely along my path as a junior dev

I'm sorry if I lost the structure to this post, i'm just excited and a bit overwhelmed with all the research i've been doing

I feel stuck: what are some intermediate to advanced programming project tutorials I can follow along with?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 11:00 AM PDT

I'm a junior Computer Science major at university, and I've taken all of the beginner-level programming courses at my school. I can't start any upper-level topics until the fall, but I really want to apply what I know so far. The only problem is that I have a really hard time connecting the dots of all of the beginner things I know. I know a lot of individual things about Java, but how do I connect those things into a bigger project? Same is true for web development; I've studied HTML, CSS, Javascript, and PHP, but I have no clue how to combine these things into a larger scale project.

Does anyone have good tips for tutorials that take you through an intermediate to advanced level project? I'm interested in anything from game programming to algorithms to web apps, etc.

How long did it take you to read K&R (The C Programming Language)?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 11:20 PM PDT

I'm reading K&R these days. The book certainly is short if you look at the page-count (~200). However, it seems be teaching me a lot of good "skills" regarding writing good code. Developing that skill certainly would take more time than just reading through the pages.

So, I'm curious to know how much time did you people spend on completing that book?

Find which alphabet come more frequently after certain alphabet in english dictionary

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:36 PM PDT

I am trying to know which alphabet comes more frequently after a certain alphabet in english dictionary for example if the first letter is 'a' what is the frequency that the next letter will be 'b' in english dictionary and if the first 2 letter is 'ab' what is the frequency that the next letter will be 'c' and the list goes on.

One way i can find the number of combination of all the letter in english language is to use find all the sub sequence of 26 alphabet which is computational non polynomial

    So my question is,
Is there any other way to solve this problem or any cryptographic resource where i can find all the frequency of word after another.

    Thank you

What is a recursive helper method?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:14 PM PDT

I feel sort of dumb asking this because I have a very strong feeling I have used helper methods before throughout programming but just not familiar with the term. From I understanding a helper method is used to break down a method to solve an issue, make it more efficient, etc.? For recursion, I believe a recursive helper method does the same thing? Does the recursive helper method itself have to always be recursive or that depend on the situation? The reason I might be getting confused is that the word "recursive" in a recursive helper method. I apologize if this is a very trivial question.

Potential issues with many threads in python 3 threading module?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:46 PM PDT

    import threading import time import sched # Sends a message after 5 seconds (will be replaced with a given unix time stamp) def delay(message): s = sched.scheduler(time.time, time.sleep) s.enterabs(time.time() + 5, 0, print, [message]) s.run() t = threading.Thread(target=delay, args=["hi"]) t.start()

I'm making a python backend for messaging that will have the ability to send a message at a given unix time. I'm creating a thread to handle executing the function at the given unix time (above sends it 5 seconds into the future though) using sched.

I was wondering what problems might arise if a user were to try and send a ton of messages later, creating a ton of threads? I was also wondering if this is even that best way to handle executing a function at a later date in a server.

I had joined some names and seeing the availability of the domains, but what I liked the most (geekhouse.dev) did not sound like something "original", when I researched further, I saw that there are already stores and YouTube channels known with the same name , "geekhouse", so I tried to create a word from a sentence, and ended up creating this: "Fothure" ([Fo]r - [th]e - fut[ure])
