[Showoff Saturday] I built a UI Kit in Bootstrap and MIT Licensed it

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 02:57 AM PDT

    Hey guys 👋

So almost a year ago I developed a UI Kit written in Bootstrap 4 and I thought today would be a good day to share it with you. Pixel Lite is licensed under the MIT License, so you can do whatever you want with it!

    Repo: https://github.com/themesberg/pixel-lite-bootstrap-4-ui-kit

    Demo: https://demo.themesberg.com/pixel-lite/

PS: lucky stars help us on Github 😇

PS2: we're the same guys who created the Windows 95 UI Kit 😂(https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/f7tnks/showoff_saturday_i_created_a_windows_95_ui_kit/)

I was bored so to boost myself I created this little game, feedbacks appreciated

    Color Tile Game

The above link takes you to a color game which I had created in 2016, the idea is to select the color that will be formed when three colors RED, GREEN and BLUE are mixed in certain percentage. It was made with basic html, css and js website hosted in GitHub itself.

Recently, I was super bored and when I looked at the codebase it was really poor, unreadable and had no feature, the logic was poorly implemented. So I decided to rewrite everything from scratch using ES6 and adding a few features like login for my friends so that we can store our past gameplays, also a leaderboard to keep track of who is doing better.

It took me almost 4 days(3hr/day) to complete the project. The current implementation is much more better than previous one, the codebase is readable, modular and neat. I have also worked on the UI to make is more user friendly by using flat colors.

If anyone is into front-end development I love to hear your feedback on this app.

If you like the repo, do let me know by 🌟 ing it 🤓

Note: I am not interested in collecting any data or advertisement so u don't need to login to your profile, that part is just for me and my friends.

[Showoff Saturday] I made Exodus, a free (MIT) landing page template for Bootstrap 4

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 07:48 AM PDT

    Hi!

I've made a landing page for Bootstrap, which features an unconventional animated background in order to attempt to create a first impression that sticks with people. Check it out!

GitHub repo: https://github.com/vantagedesign/exodus-landing-page, with links to the demo and documentation.

    Demo: https://docs.vantage-design.com/exodus/demo/

It also includes a GulpJS workflow with SASS CSS and minification of CSS and JS, including a browsersync live reloading dev server. This way, you can easily edit Bootstrap's source code (color variables and stuff) to your likings. Or you can just use the precompiled JS and CSS if you're happy with the design already. Adding or editing content is just plain old Bootstrap 4 code.

I'll also be working on more free stuff like this if the response is positive, so let me know :) I also plan on adding more sections to the template. Which sections would you like to see?

What do you guys think? Is there anything I should improve?

I made a Discord Bot for team kills in Tarkov

I made a Discord Bot for team kills in Tarkov

    I'm a web developer and I've been addicted to Tarkov since the start of the year so I wanted to work on something to do with EFT whilst learning some new skills so;

My friends and I sometimes (kinda often) end up killing each other in Tarkov, so I decided to make a Discord Bot to track the killer and victims so we can keep track of the worst offender.

    You can log a kill:

    https://preview.redd.it/48cwvghrwmm41.png?width=358&format=png&auto=webp&s=de175bbb324cd5dd529d552bfadead4a3dd74910

Then view the team kill scoreboard:

    https://preview.redd.it/76x06g2twmm41.png?width=324&format=png&auto=webp&s=d6e96561eec5b1422a4bf2820bae20933b06eb79

And view the team death scoreboard:

    https://preview.redd.it/f7z0ua4uwmm41.png?width=292&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeb7139dcb0fcf2afe4014024f0415bed841eb04

Right now it's hard-coded to our server, but if there's a decent amount of groups of people that would want to use this, I'd be happy to try and build it out to be usable in any Discord server!

Regardless; just wanted to post for the sake of sharing and hopefully someone finds this kinda interesting/cool!

Remove Background From Image - free online tool

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:26 AM PDT

There are tools for removing backgrounds: ClippingMagic.com or Remove.bg. They work very well, but can be a bit expensive for many people.

I am the creator of Photopea photo editor and I wanted to make a free alternative to these tools. I came up with Magic Cut.

The interface is the same as in ClippingMagic - paint with red and green colors on the left and see the result on the right.

I would like to get some feedback :) If you were looking for a simple way to remove backgrounds for free, I believe it could be useful to you.

[Showoff Saturday] Looking for portfolio feedback and advice for the job search

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:16 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

I just updated my portfolio and wanted to get feedback from the more experienced members of the sub: https://digitalheat.co.

My resume can also be viewed too: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JRQABqvOONqYx-MQnxYHwbkjEUYea7gT. I do know that I should add a project section and improve some of my job descriptions though.

I'm still aiming for a junior level position at this point since I don't think I could quite reach mid-level positions and wanted to know what I should do to improve my chances at getting an interview since I've never actually had a salaried dev job before (initially my career path was PR. Haha).

    [Showoff Saturday] Instruction Manual

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 06:47 AM PDT

Hello /r/webdev, I am working on a generic gaming wiki system and as a test I have worked up a bit of a Risk of Rain 2 wiki.

The project is called 'Instruction Manual' and you can view it at the following link - please keep in mind that only the homepage and character pages are fleshed out, as well as the entire system being pretty WIP.

    RoR2 Instruction Manual

    Instruction Manual Homepage

So why am I posting this?

I'd like to find a few people to go through and make a few pages, maybe update some content, and give me some detailed feedback on what they thought. Please DM me or comment here if you are interested in giving deep feedback.

Of course if you want to just play around with a bit and comment your feedback down below that would be very helpful as well - you can use the entire editor without logging in just hit the 'edit' button in the top right.

I graduate in a few months and I’d really love to work as a web developer but I don’t know if I have what it takes

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Hey all, In a few months from now, if all goes well, I will graduate and get an associates degree in IT. I really love web developing, so much so that I keep myself busy in my free time by working on my own little projects and when looking back at older works, I see that I improved and am getting better.

When I graduate, one of my goals is to find work, preferably as a web developer. For months this seemed achievable and I was convinced of myself but as the end is nearing, I find myself thinking more and more about it. I'm asking myself things like "Will I be able to keep up with the rest of the team I'll be put in, since they'd be professionals with probably more experience and knowledge than me".

I'm 21 years old, still young, but I don't really see myself studying more after my graduation, because I want to start making money doing the thing I love.

I'm reaching out to you guys, because I know some of you work as web devs and have a lot of experience. Should I worry about my lack of experience, how did you feel when you are about to start your very first job? Can anyone relate to how I am feeling, and if so, how has it gone for you?

[Showoff Saturday] I built a synthesizer using Tone.js and React

[Showoff Saturday] I built a synthesizer using Tone.js and React

    See it live: https://nudelholz.netlify.com/

    Browse the repo: https://github.com/Ansimorph/nudelholz

All of the audio is processed by Tone.js which is an abstraction on top of the web audio API. It allows to connect together signal sources and processors much like you would in a modular synthesizer. So I built one. A noisy one.

Apart from that the project is using React and Astroturf for CSS-in-JS. It heavily uses CSS variables both for theming and animation. The overall layout is built using CSS Grid. It would profit from subgrids, because most of the encoders are grouped using nested components. Which does not align well with CSS grid, which only does layout for its immediate children. All of the encoders build on react circular input, but wrap it in a component that adds some ARIA to make it a tad more accessible.

What I learned building this is that web audio signal and event processing is pretty smart, because it allows to schedule events for the near future, so that they are executed in sync with the rest of the music. This is why a lot of the state is handed from React to Tone.js at some point. That feels unnatural at first, but it allows to do things like modulation via LFO (Basically turning knobs with a waveform) in a very precise matter.

The synth can be controlled via MIDI in Chrome via an Allen & Heath Xone K2. Because I have one lying around and turning real knobs is fun.

Front-End done, is Ghost the right CMS for me (node.js based - one admin, two editors), or should I look elsewhere ?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:16 AM PDT

    1. I want no backend interference with my Front-End design (the data layer should only function as a link to the Front-End. If it comes with style, I can still impose my own style on top.)

    - Each member must have their own blog page within the website (in other words, three seperate blog "entities")

    - There must be a member authorization (sign in) function (the ui where members post content should be user friendly).

    - There will be text, sound, image and video uploads. Some single uploads may exceed 1gb.

    - Uploads: once a week.

    2. If you were to guess, what cost range will I be look at it for this service?

    3. This is my first attempt at moving beyond the presentation layer (vanilla JS), and I would need a smooth introduction into these configurations/ or be offered comprehensive tutorials. With that said, I seek a certain level of complexity, and using a website-builder is out of the question.

    Thx

    CPanel: How can I redirect a [site].ca domain to a https://www.[site].ca?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I've been looking at various redirect and CNAME options. Some seem to not agree with https, some are explicitly not recommended, as per here:

Please do not set up a CNAME record for a naked domain (@ hostname) since this may affect the operation of the domain's MX records and, consequently, the email service. In most cases, you will need to create a CNAME record for WWW (or other subdomain) and a URL redirect for @ that will point to http://www.yourdomain.tld/

I'm not totally clear on how to do this without causing some further error I won't be able to diagnose.

Should I follow https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/385/2237/how-to-redirect-a-url-for-a-domain (redirect) for the 2nd part and https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9646/2237/how-to-create-a-cname-record-for-your-domain for the 1st part (CNAME)?
