Posted: 14 Mar 2020 08:45 AM PDT I'm talking in depth about a game design choice, how I've luckily foreseen the problem it would give me later, and how I reworked the whole system to solve my problems, while also improve it in every way to make it more interesting for the player. I'm usually not making videos like this (last one was a year ago) as it takes a few days off from working on the game, and I don't feel very good at it yet, although I'm sure it comes with practice, like everything else... From my point of view, it's work time traded for (if the video is well made enough) community growth / communication, and it's not easy/natural neither for an introvert like me, but I'm a hard worker. Anyway, now that I have this new system, I'll be able to craft some more interesting consequences for players actions, which is quite exciting for me! I do hope you'll find this interesting, if you have feedbacks or questions I'm happy to read or answer them!... [link] [comments]

Paying for a Game Design Document? Posted: 14 Mar 2020 12:02 PM PDT TL;DR - Want to pay for a GDD. Looking for suggestions, past experiences, advice? Thanks! I want to make a small game in my spare time (roughly ~5 to 8 hours a week), but I would like to have a plan before I start working on it. I'm struggling to put a game design document together, and I thought it might be good to pay a professional to write one for me which I can then take, break down into tasks, and get to work. My first thought is to go to Fiverr, but perhaps there are better options out there? I'm curious to hear if anyone on here has done that before? I imagine it is possible, since I also think I would eventually commission some assets, music, and sfx to pull the whole thing together. I don't see why I can't do the same with the GDD? Just finished "Console Wars" by Blake J. Harris, here's a quick review Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:46 AM PDT Book Review: "Console Wars" by Blake J. Harris"Console Wars", or its robust full title "Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation", documents the fourth generation of video game consoles through the eyes of Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske, with occasional perspectives provided by Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President Howard Lincoln and Sony's Olaf Olafsson. OverviewThe book starts in 1990, after the home console crash of the early 80's and subsequent revival by Nintendo with the Famicom/NES in the late 80's. The book's main plot follows how Kalinske took the then unknown Sega from a 5% market share to 55% of the home console market through marketing the Genesis as an edgy, more adult video game console in-contrast to Nintendo's family friendly image. The book ends naturally as Kalinske steps down as the CEO for Sega of America shortly after the launch of the Sega Saturn. "Console Wars" covers famous game industry moments: the launch of the Super NES, the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega's "Welcome to the Next Level" marketing campaign, development and abandonment of the mythical Super NES CD-ROM, the infamous Nintendo press conference where Nintendo backstabbed Sony by announcing an ill-fated partnership with Phillips, the launch of Mortal Kombat and Sonic 2, the launch of the Sega CD and it's controversial title Night Trap, the subsequent 1993 congressional hearings on video games ratings, the transition from CES to the creation of E3, Nintendo's development of the graphically groundbreaking Donkey Kong Country, the forgetful launch of the Sega 32X, the pivot by Sony from looking for partnerships with Nintendo and Sega to developing their own console and finally the downfall of Sega with the launch of the poorly received Sega Saturn. Why You Should Read It"Console Wars" gives a great glimpse into the history of the game industry written from the perspective of the players who were there. The book is first and foremost a product marketing book. From an educational standpoint, it provides a great insight to the chaotic nature of product marketing back in the 90's and gives readers a look into how, almost purely through marketing, a failing brand was able to capture the majority share of a market. Although magazine and television ads are no longer the main avenue for brand management today, the overall sentiment and strategy Kalinske and team deployed remains effective. Also, the book gives insight in how multi-national corporations think and why they make the decisions they make. The corporate cultural difference between Nintendo of America and Sega of America couldn't be more stark. Nintendo believes in something more than profits, shying away from violence and aggressive marketing, while Sega has a hunger to prove itself and succeed at all cost. The other culture clash is between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. The book paints Sega of America as the reason for the Genesis' success and Sega of Japan as the reason for Sega's downfall. Releasing the Sega CD and 32X too soon after the Genesis and refusing to partner with Sony on the Saturn, allowing the Playstation to dominate the fifth console generation, are all blamed on Sega of Japan's CEO Hayao Nakayama. Finally, I believe in the value of studying the game industry's history to help guide its future. Understanding how and why the video game industry has arrived at this point in time is critical to avoiding similar missteps both Sega and Nintendo made in the future. I honestly wish there was a "Console Wars" written for each home console generation; I would read them all. [link] [comments]
Oculus Quest Hand Tracking Limitations Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:03 AM PDT Hi all, For a university project I need to take a deep look into the hand tracking feature the Oculus Quest provides. It's my understanding that tracking basically stops at the wrist for most applications, however this project requires to track from the wrist down, possibly up to the elbow. Is anyone aware if this is currently possible with the tech Oculus provides and if so if there are any example projects I could take a look at. Thanks! [link] [comments]

What features do you miss/hate on Game Engines? Posted: 14 Mar 2020 12:12 PM PDT As a backstory, I have wanted to make a game engine for some years now and after I saw an old C game(-ish) I made back in 2011 when I started programming I saw that it had a lot of the components that needed already. So I, a few weeks I thought "I can make this professional" and started doing my own engine as a mean of learning how to deal with a big project. But, instead of going full on on doing things that I think would be useful, I figured it would be better to ask the community here: what do you think game engines lack today? What bothers you the most with the ones that you use today? I have used the search bar and I think a lot of people must have thought "great, another useless game engine post". While I have no expectations for it to be used on a commercial game at all, I hope to incorporate feature requests and make it as usable and useful as possible, as I am going to do it anyway. Posted: 14 Mar 2020 10:54 AM PDT Hiya! I'm very new to this whole thing, just started this morning actually. But I had an idea, I'm looking for 2-3 other people willing to work together in order to create a horror game on unreal engine. I've been wanting to do this for quite some time. I'm not expecting something like a AAA title, I'm just simply trying do create a free-roam style horror game. Are you up for it? If you are, add me on discord @Basil#9828 and I look forward it! (I'm 14 btw, and would preferably work with people between 14-16 but if not, that fine with me) [link] [comments]

How much c++ do I need to know to learn gamedev /SDL libraries? Posted: 14 Mar 2020 04:16 AM PDT Hey, I want to learn game development and how to make a game. Many people even this subeddit recommended me to start learning SDL libraries. The problem I have is I am not even understanding anything, even creating the main game loop. I know the basics of c++ (loops, operators, functions e.t.c) but I do not think is is enough. I stielll do not know how to create classes and objects. Please guide me and tell me the right path towards gamedev and I if I need to learn more c++ please tell me any resources I can learn from. For SDL I tried using this YouTube tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQzAHcojEKg&list=PLhfAbcv9cehhkG7ZQK0nfIGJC_C-wSLrx Thank you. Edit: Thank you for your replies I found it helpful. Posted: 14 Mar 2020 05:52 AM PDT For 1 month I have been trying to create a game. I started with story and game engines like unity, unreal. It seems I will be able to create something but I don't know how to add/make music and how to design visual work. I don't have enough budget to buy these or hire someone to make these. Is there a way to handle this problem? What did you do for your game? [link] [comments]
How would you Instantiate ( create ) and delete platforms in an endless jumper game? Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:35 AM PDT I watched many videos but nothing seemed to satisfy me. I want to make an endless jumper game, kinda like Doodle Jump. How should I tell the game when to create new platforms for the player to jump. I tried making it create a new platform each time a previous one is destroyed but it doesn't satisfy me, considering that I may want to make the number of platforms less as the player goes higher. Another option is every X seconds, this doesn't satisfy me either because if the player stands in one platform for many seconds a lot of platforms will be created for no reason, causing the game to get laggy. I haven't tried making it be based on the player's score (how high he is from the starting position), maybe this would work? What do you suggest? What would you use for such a game? Also, I made a game object which always stays at the bottom of my screen ( with a destroy script) so that everything that gets past it gets destroyed. Do you think that this is a good option? Is there a better way? Thanks for your time :) [link] [comments]
How do I make a web-hosted online RPG? Posted: 14 Mar 2020 09:21 AM PDT Thanks to Covid 2019 I've got six weeks with nothing to do; I wanna make a game that I can play with my friends online. Obviously there's lots already out there, but It's my junior year and I want to have something to show for these few weeks. So basically, how would I go about making a Runescape type game. By that I mean, what are some resources for making a game that players can run (and play with each other live) from web browsers as opposed to downloading. Thank you all! [link] [comments]

Physics & Collision - Characters twitching when steps up on physics objects Posted: 14 Mar 2020 08:33 AM PDT Characters starts twitching when steps up on physics objects in UE4 . To solve it I tried to turn off query colision for capsule and enable query&physics for character mesh. Tried playing with static mesh collisions - CCD, use complex, use simple. Set mass to little values as 0.01 Didn't help. Do I miss something or does physics engine needs to modified in ue4 for normal collision hanlding as well? In ue4 games like Dishonored, Bioshock - stepping on physics objects doesn't cause any crazy character spins and twitchings [link] [comments] |
