My 5 ebooks on regex and cli tools are free for the foreseeable future Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:15 AM PDT Hello! Amid all the pandemic fears, today I made the decision of making all my ebooks free for the foreseeable future. Use either of the below links to download them together as a bundle: There are five books - three of them on regex (Ruby, Python, JavaScript) and two on cli tools (GNU grep and ripgrep, GNU sed). Currently working on GNU awk, which will take another month if I want to include everything I had planned. Now, I'm thinking of releasing as drafts and see how it goes. I plan to release book markdown source as well in coming days. Already done for Ruby, see https://github.com/learnbyexample/Ruby_Regexp Stay safe and happy learning. [link] [comments] |
First basic python program, would like advice on how to make it better Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:00 PM PDT https://repl.it/repls/KnobbyInsecureTriangles I just made my first rock paper scissors vs ai program in python without looking at anyone else's code to do it and I wanted to search up some other ways people have done it, but a lot of what I found seemed incredibly confusing and unnecessary. Any and all advice is welcome! [link] [comments] |
Suggest best public universities in Germany for MS in Computer science Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:20 PM PDT I am an international student and want to apply for MS in Computer Science programs for this Winter 2020 session. I have already done a research in DAAD & made a list, but I feel like I might've mistakenly skipped many great public universities ( no tution fees, English Programs ). I have no helping hand or a friend so I had to do this all by myself, so I really need a help on this. Please mention any other universities which I might have skipped. I am sharing the uni list here:
n.b - I have excluded RWTH Aachen since the application period is already over. Application fees isn't a problem for me as long as the university is public without tution fees. Getting into a good computer science program is my goal. Preferred programs are anything except embedded systems/games engineering. I am really in need of help, so will be posting at multiple subs. Thanks in advance! Hope to get some response!!! [link] [comments] |
Lost and clueless about web apps Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:15 PM PDT Okay so I wanna learn how to make a web app . I wanna make a web app where users can connect with their own accounts and have a dashboard showing some stats/graphs with a calendar showing things to come/deadlines and of course they can input some data to change those things on the dashboard. I'm specifying the context in case there's a particular language/technology that makes it easier to do that. In the past few days I looked up on the Internet about web apps and websites and to be honest I'm clueless about where to start. I keep reading about php, ruby, python, react, javascript and all those things and now I'm lost. I'm not completely new to programming (1st year software engineering student mainly studying with C++) but it's the first time I'm doing web development. If you guys could help me sort this out and maybe give me some clues about where to start, which technology to use, maybe some small tips and where to find resources to learn all of that it would be perfect for me. I know I'm asking for some basic stuff and it might sound really stupid but I'm truly lost and I really want to learn. Thank you for reading my post :). [link] [comments] |
I don't see what i should do after learning basic programming Posted: 19 Mar 2020 12:30 AM PDT I am in my college first year and just finished basic c++ and doing dsa but i have no idea what to do after that. I like competitive programming but i want to learn some other skills as well. Pls help i need ur experiences [link] [comments] |
What is the most comprehensive Python book that you know? Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:52 PM PDT I can only think of Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun but was wondering if anyone else knew of others. [link] [comments] |
Surprisingly having trouble with Java after learning C++ Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:33 PM PDT Hey guys! Java is actually harder than I expected. I tried w3schools since I was familiar with C++. It seems that looking up one term just leads to another, and then I hear completely different definitions of some terms. Also, everything being in a class just makes me uncomfortable. ex) So you have to put static before every function that doesn't need an object? How do references work? In C++ you can just put a & sign in front of the parameter and the variable is passed by reference. How do I remember the names of all the modifiers? Etc, etc. Any tips? I'm about to check out Hyperskill (the maker of IntelliJ's tutorial) since I'm using IntelliJ. [link] [comments] |
Its third time may be after other dsperations/frustuation in the row Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:57 PM PDT have been learning through both theoritical and practical programming/impleameanting own ideas of how program flows/and how much a time/ And its really slow in my case may b the reason is in my vocubalary problem.I am from Nepal and really best stuffs in it is N/A here and nepali literature in IT/cs is really in poor form. May may be I am Too concentrating to have celetic memory throughout my whole school life.Another defect in me may be due to many nights awake after I started practical programming and thinking of need in more theoritical understanding. <out of topic>celetic memory i'vd developed through slowlearning<and may be language oriantiation/deorientaion> while still on 2.5 <now i am 24> I now only realizd the learning process in childhood/something like learning mother tongue / or the basics in learning of a child/ bts my vocubalary is too low need some guidance from experienced ones please, help me decide its celetic memory and i can't decide which one to keep c++primer(tried it slows me down)* even than in(accelerated c++) which creates thinking of is this way(path) right to choose ,c++ programming language (takes all stamina you have, have a really good code examples) tried it all easy to understand the third one even learnc++.com is great) tried a bit of c++reference/*) *these i didn't have studied in detail//others went through a lot of details /exercises/theory and practical in over 18 months having between nearly only a month gap in between/my first orientaion on c++ was through sams:learn c++ in 24 hours(2nd edition) about 4 or 5 years before both c++ times i had learnt java before 4-5 years simple java, inbetween 4-5(i.e 2.5 years ago j2me) then java tutorials before the first before this orientation in different js(veu, react, node , even {elixer, cuda, asembly,c,crypto, opengl, smfl} tried some coding too) loved some and hated some more but selection must be one and only /////// before all ofthese learnt some json, js php was only dedicated to php when wordpress came in nepal and till and after the laravel //////// tried it all oop, security, image captcha, optimization, abit msql/i,ajax while first learning object model ,it took a lot of time a really a lot was really confused with functions after functional or object based scripting )still confused in js ////the main problem now is i am just learning vocubalary,at first i understood like a bit but now everything is confusing can't get a word in texts/am i demotivated?no?till project based motivation is still on. like i am deep like in my sub-councious and uncouncious too slow like 10-20 words but a single page in full....I understand too well basic english but words are like too much advanced in those books.even combination of known words is confusing and can't get it.y'all can help me asking questions or giving any solutions to these.I Think i might need a really good career councelealing...which is not available in nepal. which one book can you suggest for my really slow learning.I am a self learner/autodidact/ /*know/experienced in some observational psychology.and can i include some of my cognition and psycs phelosophy dunno some cognitive bias might be included which if i can't differ it from which one to include*/ [link] [comments] |

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:42 PM PDT Hey everyone, hope you're all staying safe and healthy! Now that I have a lot more time being stuck at home, I want to work on a lot of fun personal projects and bulk up my resume. I've seen others on the Reddit also wanting to do the same thing, and I want to try to put together a Discord group with people who want to work on projects together or share tips and advice. I want to work on a personal site showcasing projects, use APIs and data to do something cool or useful and use TensorFlow to analyze data or photos. I have ideas for projects for each of these but I'd be down to brainstorm ideas, listen to suggestions and work on projects with others. Message me if you're interested! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:52 PM PDT Not really related to anything well sorta but I enjoy like I really enjoy programming and working on projects with my older cousin for his company but I recently made a mistake in joining the union (sheet metal) and it's not my cup of tea by a long shot, I am using the union job as a front to help buy me a new improved laptop I just don't know where to get refreshed and certified through credible sources via websites. Can't persuade my parents. I apologize if this has no relation I just need some insight. And guidance & mentor [link] [comments] |

How to utilize poor API documentation? Posted: 18 Mar 2020 02:38 PM PDT I am currently working with the Minecraft Forge API documentation. The Minecraft API documentation is poorly written. My main question is how do you utilize the docs, or what would be the best way to find out how to start creating a mod. My main goal is to not use the Minecraft modding communities for help or tutorials, i want to challenge myself. I want to find out how to use API's even when the Documentation is poor. Ive been coding for about 4 months so i am fairly new, this is the first time ive worked with an API. Is there a way of navigating source code to figure how to set things up? [link] [comments] |

The Odin Project: Why Ruby on Rails and should I skip it ? Posted: 18 Mar 2020 08:18 PM PDT I am looking to dive into The Odin Project (TOP), and for awhile I have seen many appraisals about it. I have a basic knowledge on HTML/CSS but looking to learn more on web dev. However, as I see in any of TOP's tracks they will teach Ruby on Rails (RoR). I am not sure if that's the one I should be learning ? Don't mean to disrespect, but isn't RoR a tech of 10 year ago ? Those with experience, do you think it's still relevant today ? Because as a beginner I think it's better to walk straight into the main road without any sideway confusion. Just need your advice. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Arduino kit/equipment recommendations for water pressure/flow control system Posted: 18 Mar 2020 08:02 PM PDT Hey all, My plan for quarantine is to convert a reverse osmosis membrane separation system in my research lab from commercial software and controllers to Arduino. The system uses a mechanical pump to pump pressurized water to the feed side of a membrane and automatically maintains the same feed pressure by continuously lowering the feed water flow overtime as the membrane progressively becomes more clogged. I hope to use Arduino to run this system. I'll have time to figure out the details, but for now I'm scrambling to figure out what kit/equipment to order before all shipping potentially shuts down. I have lots of programming experience, but none with micro-controllers, so any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Do coding bootcamps like App Academy and Hack Reactor background check? Posted: 18 Mar 2020 07:48 PM PDT I was an idiot and earned my first misdemeanor DUI. I am currently pending a court date and want to know how this will impact myself as an applicant in their "job guarantee" software engineering in person course. All thoughts are very appreciated.
