    Why the hell are most posts on this sub someone desperately looking for way to AVOID developing??

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:21 AM PDT

    I think the point of this sub is getting lost and it's just becoming tech support for new or non developers looking for an easy prebuilt way out of their problems.

    I'm 100% into helping, coaching, mentoring other developers who are trying to genuinely learn and need some help, but this is getting ridiculous.

    "Hey guys, I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas. Is there a way to copy and paste an entire website in 2 seconds, but also have it be completely different? I need to do this for a client with a $50 budget?"

    Do other dev’s feel like their portfolio projects aren’t good enough to display soon after or even during development?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 12:18 PM PDT

    TLDR - I don't feel like I can put my side-projects on my portfolio because they're no longer an accurate representation of my skill/knowledge due to having either learned so much during development or through client events that posed a negative impact on the final result.

    So I've been doing a few side-projects outside of work (they're fine with it, but I can't put my solo work projects on my portfolio) to improve my skills and learn new technologies I wouldn't learn at work - as a hobby, not for money, just with the condition that I can put them on my portfolio website when I'm done. I like to keep my portfolio site up-to-date as a showcase of my knowledge/skills/hobbies rather than as a tool to get work.

    I have a few of my personal projects to go on but the two IRL client projects I have to go on; the first one was so simple and the client wouldn't let us deviate from a 2000's looking style, and the latest one I am finishing now I cringe at when I see some parts because I have improved so much during development but can't change those bits because it has been approved long ago. They just aren't a true reflection of my current skill and I feel they are held back.

    I could put these on my portfolio as proof of real world experience (though it seems pointless now I have a full-time job) but then I feel people would look at them and think "eww" as it devalues the rest of my work. They say to only put you best projects on show. I could write a good case-study about them but posting a picture of them would look underwhelming.

    What do you guys think? What would you do?

    Personal Website

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 03:52 PM PDT

    Hello, I've been trying to get into web development/web apps, etc, and I was thinking that building a personal website would be a good start/practice. I've been playing around with some HTML/CSS based templates and it's a bit dense/hard to figure out. I have a few questions -

    1. Do I have to use HTML/CSS? I've seen people build websites with react and was wondering which might be easier/more beginner-friendly.

    2. Are there any tutorials I could watch that walk you through the whole process?

    Thank you!

    Advice Needed

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 02:24 PM PDT

    I am new to web development and am working on a project for my school. It is a simple quiz that I have been using wix to design. There are 15 questions, and based on the questions it will sort the user into one of four different categories. I need advice on how to incorporate a counter for each of the four categories. When a button is pressed, one of the counters will be increased by 1. At the end of the quiz, I need to evaluate which counter is highest and then send the user to a different page based on which category they fall under. Currently, I have each answer button linked to the next question, but I want to also link the answer button to the counter. Any help would be much appreciated!

    What are things like Insomnia used for?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:48 PM PDT

    I've been reading about Insomnia and I got to use it, but I didn't quite understand the purpose.

    For example, I have a backend with Django / DRF, and that provides me with an interface to interact with endpoints, and I believe that almost every framework is like that. So, if I have this, why would I use something like insomnia?

    Maybe to interact with external APIs? I intend to create a web development course, and if it is useful for example, working with the github api, it may be useful. Because I can make API calls in Insomnia, see the structure of the result, etc. Although I can also do this through the browser.

    Store/use Google API keys generated by your users?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:40 PM PDT

    I have an app that uses Google Translation API and its reaching its limits.

    Since I have a lot of users, I thought I could give them an option to generate keys from their own Google Account, have them store it on my end (along with their account info), and then use their own keys to facilitate the Google services for which I've been using my own key so far. That way they probably won't reach the limit individually, and more so, they could upgrade their limits on their own. I wouldn't need to manage any monetization from my end at all.

    Google would be getting a lot of requests with different API keys from the same IP address.

    Is that allowed as per Google's policies? And in general?

    A Zapier for developers?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:30 PM PDT

    Probably like many of you here, I've been building various apps for ages. One thing I've noticed is that almost all apps (mobile & web) often have the same functionality. For example, when users register you send them some sort of welcome email or you update their profile in Zendesk whenever they update their profile, etc.

    At my company, we often do this kind of stuff with a mix of AWS SQS + Lambda functions. It's been getting really messy lately because there's so many of them.

    Curious if anyone has done these kinds of small functions via a third-party. I know it's not very "enterprise-y" but perhaps Zapier?

    Tutorials for good on hover effects?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:21 PM PDT

    Hi there. I'm developing my online portfolio and am looking for some good on hover effects for the portfolio pieces. The kind that will allow me to show more info and links when they hover over the image or screenshot. Anyone have any good resources for learning about this? All my results I get from searching are from sites selling you effects, which obviously I don't want.

    Should I leave my current full-time job to a contract-to-hire amidst a pandemic?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:08 PM PDT

    I'm a Front End Developer working at a company that's behind the times, no framework( react, angular etc), business casual and I just started working home for the first time because of COVID-19 virus. It's a billion dollar company with lots of benefits etc.

    I just received an offer to another big company as a Front End Engineer, making 27k more, it has modern workplace, tech stack etc. Only downside, I have to work through a contracting agency for 6 months before I get on board. No PTO but I have 5 sick days. It's a very well known financial company.

    I'm paranoid because I feel like if there is another recession, I'll be one of the very first to be let go. I'm 26 by the way if that matters. And also 5-6 years experience.

    Cost of website development

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 04:06 PM PDT

    Hello ladies and gentlemen,

    I have an idea I have been mulling over in my mind for awhile in regard to content creation and wanted to eventually incorporate a newsletter and subscriber options.

    I'm looking at Ghost as it appears to be very clean and has some seemingly easy integration that I'm looking for.

    However, I'm an amateur in website development and so I was wondering what the cost of having someone else build it for me would be?

    Thanks!

    Integrating payment to a website

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 10:04 AM PDT

    Hello! Just here looking for a bit of advice. So my uncle has a business where they sell food to these big companies. I built him a website where the customers can pick what they want and when they want it and put in an order and then they'll come to the store at the date and time and pay for it, pick it up and leave. Everything was going well but due to the virus a few companies have asked if it's possible to add an online payment option to reduce contact even more, which makes sense. This is also something we were planning to add but much later down the road.

    So now I've been asked to look into it and if possible, implement it. I think I'm a pretty good developer but I've never worked with money/transaction stuff.

    So I got a few questions.

    1. Which platform should I use and is the absolute easiest? The most I've heard of is like stripe and Braintree but I'm wondering if there's any other simpler options

    2. What sort of claims/agreement do I have to put on the website, if any? Like do I have to put stuff like "we won't share your cards" or any other legal claims of any sort? Or do I have to be like "all payments handled by stripe" or whatever

    3. Any other general advice for doing something like this? I've always wanted to do something along the lines of integrating payments and we were planning to implement this in the future but this is much more sudden than I expected.

    Thank you!

    PS. The stack I'm using is MEAN and the country we're in is Canada

    Can I connect VS Code to a remote Linux server that is hosted by Host Gator(or any other hosting company)?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 03:55 PM PDT

    Instead of FTPing my files I would love to run my Wordpress installation, database, and files directly off of the server but have my theme and plugin files displayed in VS Code. I tried googling around but it appears it needs to be a VM created through Azure. Any links to how to do this or a general explanation would be great! I feel like I'm missing something simple but I haven't been able to connect to the server with the username and IP information .

    transferring domains and associating websites with domains

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi, thanks for checking this post out!

    My dad has about 20 domains registered with GoDaddy and 1 domain registered with BlueHost. The majority of his domains do not have websites associated with them. GoDaddy seems to be very expensive, both for their hosting and website builder options - would it be recommended to transfer the rest of the domains to BlueHost, or to another hosting site? His sites will likely be low-traffic, and they do not need an email server associated with them. They're just for his company.

    I see that I can use WordPress through BlueHost to build some sites (https://websitesetup.org/) - is this a good idea?

    Any advice or guidance on hosting and building sites for a reasonable price would be greatly appreciated. His birthday is this week, and I am trying to get this set up for him as a surprise. Thanks!

    For web development, should I bother learning jQuery, or just stick with React, Angular, etc?

    High school teacher seeking help.

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 08:58 AM PDT

    Hello all, apologies if I am in the wrong subreddit.

    I am a high school teacher in a state where school has been closed, but we are still expected to deliver content to our students digitally. I am teaching a class called web page design where students learn HTML, CSS, and some javascript. I am capable enough to teach these skills, but I am by no means an expert in the field.

    The goal is for every student to create their own website and have these websites shareable between students. I was planning to host their sites on the school's network drive, but that is not accessible outside the school (maybe there is a way to change this?).

    My question is; how can I host my student's websites so they may be shared and updated with relative ease?

    I have looked into google drive hosting, but it seems that this is no longer an option. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Advice: What are some sources to learn how to create a Minecraft server listing website with searchable tags?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    I'm a long time Minecraft player and have been so frustrated with the terrible server listings out there. Spammy and very limited functionality.

    My goal is to allow players to find the perfect server for them, without making as many concessions as they do now.

    What are some sources to learn how to approach this project? Anything would be appreciated, I'm more a designer and haven't done much web dev at all. But I'm here to learn.

    Thank you!

    Creating my first website for client/friend how to go about this?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 02:15 PM PDT

    I have a friend who wants to pay me to create a site for her. She owns drugs stores and wants to make a site to sell some of her drugs online, with the covid-19 virus, she is concerned about people shopping so much at her stores and wants an online site she can tell people to look at. She would also like to have people be able to pay on the site, enter adress info and shop online so she can deliver the products. I have been learning to code for almost a year now, more seriously in recent months and have good css skills and medicre javascript skills and a bit of react. I am currently unemployed and can work on this a lot, I think I want to avoid wordpress and do things more from scratch for more practice then if I used something like wordpress or shopify. She doesnt want to spend too much which is why I thought I would avoid something like shopify but if thats the best option I could use it

    How to separate my buttons so that they aren't on top of each other?

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:10 PM PDT

    So I'm trying to create some buttons that are side-by-side, left-to-right, in the top right corner of the page. I was able to place the buttons in the top right corner, but they are all on top of each other. How do I make them side-by-side, left-to-right?

    Here's the code:

    .MainClass {

    position: absolute;
    display: inline-block;
    top: 10px;
    right: 10px;
    float: right;

    background-color: transparent;
    border: none;

    }

    #Button1 {
    clear: right;
    }

    #Button2 {
    clear: none;
    }

    #Button3 {
    clear: left;
    }

    In the HTML file, the three buttons are all linked to the MainClass class.

    Good way to learn Java for web development

    Posted: 17 Mar 2020 01:06 PM PDT

    So I've been learning Java since last 10-15 days and finished the part 1 of highly recommended mooc course. As a front end developer, I've worked with JavaScript, Angular and React already.

    Was wondering what are some major topics and areas that I need to cover en-route to learning Java for back-end development? Mostly curious about:

    1) What design patterns are good to know (OOPS, MVC etc.)

    2) Tricky topics that I should take extra time out to learn(like generics etc.)

    3) Frameworks (spring-boot etc.)

    4) Build tools

    5) What kind of beginner projects should i practice with.

    Also, in what order should I cover the points above?
