Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:17 AM PDT I took a year off (of pro game dev) to make a game in 2014. That's not important right now. Cleaning up a HD I found a doc called "Lessons Learned" I wrote after making it. It's not really lessons more a harsh reality, and perspective from that time after finishing. Thought I'd share it. Solo developing your own game is like training all the best techniques of martial arts w/o ever sparring or getting in a real fight. There's a lot you know, and a world of things you don't. You can read about it as much as you like but until you do it, it's hard to "get it". I can tell you how creatively exhausting it gets, and how you'll keep pushing through. But not how that will feel as creatively drained stacks on top of itself. Or how much or your time will be feel like a complete waste, hunting and solving bugs that "shouldn't be there". That's a challenge that's hard to prepare for because its dealing with the unknown. I've read a lot of post mortems and felt secure that I wouldn't make those mistakes. That's like saying, "I would have just returned the kickoff for a touched down!" While possible, highly unlikely, even if you are confident in your abilities. It's still hard for even the best professionals with the best teams to do that. So that's where I started off. Naive and confident, great combination btw! I did have a few things going for me. I have a friend whos a great programmer who helped me out of more than a few binds, a wife who is super supportive, and money set aside specifically for me to live on while I make the game. Biggest lesson: Game development is a business first. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. But my perspective went from feeling like a 70/30 split with a publisher might be fair, to now thinking 30/70 might be. Not that I'm agreeing to that! But to say that I thought developing a game is the hardest part. Now I think selling a game is the hardest part. "Make something amazing and it will sell". But we only really know if its amazing AFTER we try to sell it. [link] [comments]

Doom Eternal was writing as a job queue, rather than a standard game loop, how was this done? Posted: 21 Mar 2020 10:34 PM PDT https://twitter.com/axelgneiting/status/1241487918046347264:
I have a hard time imagining how this would work better than threading or something, but I'd love to know more, given that Doom runs buttery smooth and it's a massive AAA game so it has to be well-architected. Cache wasn't a problem, and they didn't use fibers. More details are coming apparently, but I'd be very curious. [link] [comments]

I feel like I’ve lost all sense of creativity or artistry in using game development as an outlet. Posted: 22 Mar 2020 12:49 AM PDT First of all, quick disclaimer: I apologize if this is a bad place to post this. I guess the main point of this post is to vent a little, so I'm sorry if it's a bit lengthy or a bit depressing. I just really, really need to get this off my chest. I struggle with pretty severe depression and anxiety, I'm lonely as hell, and every day is an uphill battle. I'm doing alright I guess. I'm not suicidal by any means and I've definitely been worse off before. I'm by no means a "successful" game developer, but I've been working solo for around five years. I've made dozens of jam games, two Steam games, I've gotten hundreds of gameplay videos from big-name YouTubers, but I'm just not happy with my work. Game development is all I have - it's my one and only outlet. It's how I express myself and it's where I go when I have nowhere else to go. The problem is, I'm terrified that it's stopped working. A few years ago, I was constantly entering game jams. I'd eagerly await the theme's announcement, and as soon as I'd hear it, I'd be flooded with ideas. Stupid ideas, silly ideas, fun ideas, thoughtful ideas, unique ideas. The last few jams I've entered, I can't come up with anything at all. It's not that none of my ideas are good or unique - I just genuinely can't come up with ideas. That's been for like five jams over the span of a year, but what about long-term games? I'm working on a game right now. It's about 30% through development and I'm just hitting roadblock after roadblock, because I can't think of any ideas. I just can't. It's like every bit of creativity I had has just died. I've tried making new projects, but I can't think of anything. The most important thing to me, above all else, is to make meaningful games. This is my only passion. My only form of expression. My only outlet. For the past year or two, it's felt like I'm losing that outlet. I feel like I can't express myself through my games anymore. I don't know how to. I need to - like, for my own sanity, I need this outlet. But I'm losing it. I try to express myself but I just som't know how to anymore. It feels like I've lost that artistic-ness, that ability to express and cope. My work is becoming dull and passionless, and it's tearing me apart. My games feel generic and meaningless. Even though the gameplay's fun, the concept and gameplay is unique, I don't feel like it's saying anything. I don't feel like I'm saying anything. I feel like I'm trying so desperately to put myself into my work, to cry out through my work, but it's fading into silence... and it hurts. I'm trying to put meaning in my games. I'm trying to tell my story. I'm trying to express myself. I'm trying to use this outlet. It just isn't working anymore. I'm sorry again for the long, emotional post. It's been wearing at me for some time now and I just don't know what to do anymore. I don't expect you guys to have all the answers but I guess I'm just looking for any kind of input I can get. Thanks so much, hope you all are doing well. [link] [comments]
Bored with nothing to do in quarantine? Write a Vulkan renderer. Posted: 21 Mar 2020 11:42 PM PDT I am writing one currently following this tutorial and am really enjoying learning about all the low-level details (that used to be hidden in the drivers). It takes a lot of time to get done with all the boilerplate though, so this might be a good time to get started if you have thought about learning Vulkan in the past. [link] [comments]
Anywhere I can join forums on card game coding? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 10:23 AM PDT I´m looking to figure out how to alter and play around with coding. making different rules for card games, maybe even play it as a browser game. [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 12:09 PM PDT So, i really want to creat a game similar to Super Mario 3D world. Even thou I'm going to change a lot of things in the game, but the general atmosphere is going to be the same. I want to know, would I be able to port it to the PS or Xbox? I know that Steam has games that are clearly Mario inspired, there is even one game on steam that says in its description "similar to super mario". It's a PC game, but I'm not sure about consoles. Do you know any games on the PS or Xbox that are clearly inspired by a popular franchise (like Mario, sonic, super smash, etc...)? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:17 AM PDT Today I watched a video on directX 12 ultimate and I learned that it features mesh shading. Idk what I was doing in the cave and hence idk what it is. So what is it? How does it work? I have gist that it has something to do with polygon counts and computer adjusting it in runtime but I don't know exactly how and what it is and how is that beneficial. Is there any volunteer foreign language translation groups? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:10 AM PDT I have a game with a small amount of menu text and a couple basic paragraphs. I was wondering if any groups do translations as volunteers? I can provide an excel file with all the text. [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Mar 2020 11:35 AM PDT NOOB QUESTION. I wanted to extract League of Legends character models to make make thumbnail for a YouTube video but I have never seen anyone do that for LoL videos (There are some people who do that in CS:GO and Fortnite community) Is it illegal to use those models alter with textures a bit (Like making blades/skin etc a bit more realistic) and use it for making content related to the game? Exent: Failing to send reports and to pay us / help or advise needed Posted: 22 Mar 2020 04:47 AM PDT Hi, We are a smaller developer that has several games live with Exent that do distribute them via their stores: So far we always got sales reports and payments more or less on time. But since weeks there is no reply to any of our emails. Q4 royalty reports are overdue since weeks, nobody is replying to any email, very concerning. Is anybody here partnering with them as well and has similar issues? We are a smaller team and really concerned about what is going on with them. Thanks [link] [comments]

How to implement a forward-fixed vehicle controlled by steering behaviours? Posted: 22 Mar 2020 06:29 AM PDT I've been experimenting with steering behaviors and I'm really satisfied with the result. However, a flaw I've noticed early on is that the vehicles can abruptly flip at times. For example, if a vehicle is moving forward, but a force is applied bring it backwards, it will eventually flip after the velocity reaching zero. In my game, I would like to implement it with spaceships, so the sudden flip would be unacceptable. I've been trying to think of a solution for it, but nothing seems to be optimal. Has anyone else had to deal with this, and what solutions are there for getting around it? [link] [comments] |
