LearnSQL.com free access to all courses until 04/20/2020

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 09:51 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So I've been learning SQL for some time now, I've tried different websites and methods. Now that I have more time on my hands, unfortunately, I've invested in online courses. One site which I use is LearnSQL.com. Last Friday, I got an email from them. In the email, it stated that due to the current world situation, they are opening their platform to everyone.

    It's a browser-based e-learning platform with interactive courses.

You can learn MS SQL, My SQL PostgreSQL on various levels.

Moreover, you can find tutorials, guides, cookbooks, and other stuff on their blog - just check the "library".

If you are interested, read the full story here.

I hope some of you will find this useful. Please remember to stay at home.

    Cheers!

    Web Development or Web Design

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 07:51 PM PDT

Hey Reddit! I am a high schooler, and I want to be part of the web. I know that may sound weird. I've been trying to learn HTML and CSS, but it's hard. Should I keep pushing and fighting through it, or should I try web design? I saw this course on udemy that really sold it to me. I want to decide soon, so I can stick with that and learn while I'm young. My school currently does not have any programs like this, so what should I do. Where should I learn? I've watched a good amount of Colt Steele's video's, but I feel like web design is an easier and well paid job. What are your thoughts? What are the pros and cons? Thank you guys!

I am a professional mobile dev and about to learn web dev. Looking for some beginners to join me

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 06:53 PM PDT

I have been a developer for the past 7 years. Mostly focused on Android and have gotten some good experience on bigger projects.

During lockdown I am going to learn web development to grow my skill set. But I am looking for 5-8 beginners to join me.

I think the beginners will learn quicker and stick with it, with a professional alongside them. And I will learn it deeper because I will need to know it well enough to explain it.

I am using this as a test run, because I think it can be done for any professional dev learning a new language/platform.

Please reach out if you are interested in learning or know people who are. It will be free other than resources, and we will start with Free Code Camp curriculum.

How do you plan out a project?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 09:10 PM PDT

Hello guys, this is something that I never fully learned in school, I don't know if it's due to me being a online student and therefore I never got to sit in a classroom and watch a teacher break it down or if it's been explained rather poorly to me but I want to know how to break down a coding project and to work it out fully. I'll give you a example to help make the solution simpler.

Let's say I want to create a php project where you can create, update, and delete a person's name,, their address, and phone number from a database. How would you break that down? Where would you start. It would obviously need a form with three buttons.

To give a more abstract function, let's say you needed to create a store front for a client. Where would you start? Would you start by just designing it and working from there or would you plan it out step by step? Thanks in advance for any answers, I thought the examples would help remove the vaguness from my question and also make it more applicable to others that have this same problem. I'm currently trying to build up projects for my portfolio but when I read different project ideas, my mind draws a blank regarding where to start and what to do.

    Hi guys/gals,

I am an iOS developer who is sitting idle at home during lockdown. The projects I had have been completed and I am not expecting any new ones until the virus situation goes away. We are not allowed to roam outside and I am stuck at home.

I am willing to teach SWIFT, iOS programming to newbies. If anyone is interested they can send me a PM with basic details (e.g. skills they have) and then we can start from there.

    Thanks.

Beginner programmer want to learn HTML&CSS, JAVASCRIPT, C# and PHP while being in the Quarantaine.

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 06:19 PM PDT

Well...I recently started with my study "Software Developer" so I'm an absolute beginner! However my school is very unorganised at this moment because of the virus. I don't have any homework at this moment? So I'm really bored and feel unproductive.

So I was wondering if you guys know any websites where I can learn HTML&CSS? Or can make assignments specifically designed for beginners?

I'm also curious to learn PHP, C# and Javascript and it's should be easy.

So as you guys can tell English is like my second language and I need something that's very well explained. No difficult words or whatsoever.

Edit: I know W3schools, but I not looking for that type of websites. I'm looking for a website where I can so assignments or projects, but for beginners.

What topics/tools should I know to be able to devise an efficient algorithm for this?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 11:49 PM PDT

Suppose I am making a gaming website for a two-player game. We have to pair up people who will play together. Instead of being completely random when pairing, I would want players with similar attributes to be matched together. I would want more experienced players to be paired up with other more experienced players, I will want players to be matched with players from the same geographical region to be paired up (if possible). Note that this is not just a one-time pairing, after the players have finished playing the game, they will be matched with other available players for a new game. I will also want that the players who were recently matched with each other should not be matched again for some time.

How can I make such an algorithm? What topics/tools should I know to be able to make such an algorithm?

Currently, I am storing the information about the players in a MySQL database (if that matters). I want the algorithm to be scalable so that I can handle a large number of players (I don't know if 100k is achievable, but I would ideally want to be able to manage 100k players). I don't think this can be done using simple SQL queries efficiently.

Therefore I am pleading w you to help me find an online course to instruct him online and keep him busy. Failure to find something could be the difference between life and death, his.......

So he has taken coding courses since sixth grade. The best was done by a University were he was taught Python over 3 months in sixth grade. However he has learned NOTHING since we moved to Texas in 7,8 or 9th. He took coding class scratch in 7th, game solid in 8th and building games in power point in 9th. He literally slept thru his 1st period coding class in 9th and got an A.

So his mother and I are looking for an online course for him. We do not mind paying for a course but we do not even know where to start. I looked at the FAQ and some of the online courses but did not even know which direction to go in.

    So thanks for the help.

How can I create a lex/C program that reads simple Python statements and interprets them?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 10:49 PM PDT

I want to create a program using C that can understand simple fragments of Python code. Like a program that inputs a number and performs some operations on it and prints it. I want to run such a Python code without actually using using the Python interpreter, but rather through a C program that reads a Python file. How can I approach such a problem?

Flutter/Dart vs TornadoFX/Kotlin for modern and smooth cross-platform desktop and mobile apps

    Posted: 25 Mar 2020 09:35 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to create beautiful and performant applications, but I want to avoid any cumbersome or bloated web technologies like JavaScript/Electron, though web support would be an added bonus.

I've considered Flutter/Dart, but it's currently not ready for desktop or web, which is okay because I'm in no real rush.

I took a look at Kotlin, which seems awesome since it can be used with TornadoFX for desktop, and can also be used to create Android apps, and even target iOS and WebAssembly when compiled to native code.

Other than that, C# is out of the question since there's no cross-platform GUI framework for desktop, and Xamarin hasn't been keeping up with the times.

    Thoughts?
