(NSFW) Full Screen Mobile App (PWA) for Tiktok-like NSFW videos to bypass app store/google play restrictions

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:25 PM PST

I have posted my web app (siksok.app) several weeks ago and I have updated the app with some nice features since then.

    Link: https://siksok.app

You can now add the app on your mobile phone's home screen and play videos full screen as Progressive Web App. My friends loved it so you might too:)

For iOS: click Share on Safari -> Add to home screen

For Android: click 3 dots on Chrome -> Add to home screen

    Other features added:

    - Likes. You can like the videos you like and they are saved on your device offline for privacy reasons, no login required. Only the video id is sent to server without and user info. You can list hem using the icon top-left whenever you want.

    - Tiktok algorithm to give priority what others like. When there are enough data, we will see what the community likes.

    - Using computer keyboard to change videos (Up, down keys)

    - Share icon to copy the url.

    Features of siksok.app:

    - Doesn't show you the same video again and keep info of watched videos offline.

    - Using many sources for videos and updates automatically.

    https://www.valleyconstructionsupply.com

They are a very large construction supply company here in Seattle WA, I took this project on as the sole developer with only a handful of small projects under my belt. Any feedback is appreciated.

    Version 2.0 coming soon:

    • Dark Mode toggle and media query
    • Spanish version
    • animations

    EDIT:

Yes, my personal website and the three websites on there are done with wix. That was how I started in web development. I have taught myself to code over two years and this project I linked is the result of that. Once I have the time I will be making a new website for myself and those three wix sites. But I have too many clients to work on right now so that is on the back burner till things cool down.

I created a privacy-first solution to home security by using old phones in your web browser

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:17 PM PST

I wanted to set up my old phones, tablets and laptops as security cameras using only my web browser but couldn't find secure solutions that checked off all of the boxes I was looking for. The mobile apps in the app store were extremely vague on security guidelines and just felt dangerous overall. I wanted something that I could safely use in my home built on top of WebRTC, and since I was letting a security service into the most intimate parts of my life (my home), I decided to put my web dev skills to work and build a solution that I would want others to feel safe using as well.

I created viyo.io as a privacy-first, web-based solution to these problems. It's also a progressive web application, so users can install it and use it that way if they want to. I handle motion detection much differently than the industry leaders in that I analyze motion directly on the device rather than sending video snippets to a server to detect motion. I use a super-lightweight algorithm for this, so it's very performant too. All users get one free camera with unlimited usage for life, and can upgrade for $5/month to use an unlimited number of devices.

I wanted to support as many devices and operating systems as I could. I try to provide backwards compatibility for older devices. One of the primary cameras in my home is a Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012.

I love all types of feedback and suggestions. I'm constantly working on improving the service, so I constantly take user feedback into account.

You can check it out here: viyo.io

    Main technologies I used:

    - WebRTC for video / audio relay on top of a secure STUN / TURN platform.

    - React on the front end

    - Node on the backend

    - Web sockets for real-time UX

    - Stripe for premium subscriptions and payment processing

    - Service workers for native notification relaying

Colorblind web devs out there, how do you work around it?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 08:04 AM PST

I've been programming for about two years now, but am now moving into more front end work with my company - which I think will better suit me. However, I'm colorblind AF and so far my only work around has been looking at other sites and see what colors they use and then plugging in that code, and then verifying with my team that it looks ok. Any other methods anyone here uses to make sure you aren't combining weird colors?

    Rules for grids

What are some key points to understand about CSS grids & grid template areas?

*Grids seem to not work for me when I have the content nested inside a few other things and seem to have to directly linked to the content - Is this the same for you or am I just messing it up?

Adding noobish projects to github question

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:40 PM PST

Hi I have noobish question^ is it worth adding very begginer projects like(Chuck Norris generator random hex colors basically everything what I builded) to github just to "build it up" and show recruiter all the things I done ? Or just add things what are worth putting so when the recruiter will go on my github he will be not like "ok next" :D I am still planning to learn for like another 8 months before I will apply for anything so will be quite alot of projects there probably 😅 Also another question maybe would be better to make like 1 respiratory named for example simple projects and add all the projects there if it's possible ?

Creating a landing page that I can self host ?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:33 PM PST

Hi all , while Wix is great, I don't want to spend 17$ a month on it. I can host the same site on AWS for like 3$ a month.

I'm fine with buying a website builder as long as it's a one time cost. I'm not really a web dev person ( although I do have some skill with React Native ).

What do you think about contact forms?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:20 PM PST

Currently making a website and not sure about the contact form.

Do visitors still use them a lot or a simple email link to open the visitor's email app is enough?

Do you use them as devs on Mobile and Desktop view or just on one view?

    Please share your thoughts.

I have experience with Django and React, and want to create an app that can be used from desktop or mobile. What should I learn/focus on?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:13 PM PST

Bit of title gore, yes. So I have a bit of experience with Django and React, and will probably be working with them for quite some time. I'm interested in driving home the experience I have and expanding upon it if possible, but I'm also open to learning other things if they're much better suited for the task.

What I want, ideally, is a way to create an app that will work well for users on desktop, through their typical browsers, or on mobile. I've seen a few people pointing others in the direction of Django REST Framework and I've done a bit of reading about it, but I think my lack of knowledge in that area is crippling my ability to search for things effectively (the problem of not knowing what to ask). I don't think I'll need users to communicate with each other, but I think regardless of what I end up doing I'll need to be able to send and receive data during most of the time that the app is used.

Given my current experience, I think I'd be able to set up a site with a Django backend, React frontend, but I'm unsure of how well that would translate into being able to write a mobile app with a few different technologies swapped out.

    Thanks for any input!

How much would you value the sale of a website for a client?

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:50 PM PST

A friend of mine asked me to design a website for him. I usually use wordpress and shopify because its faster, however, this time, his needs are very specific, so I will have to code it from 0. I know programming and I've made a plan to make his website, so I know what to do. He's ready to pay $$$$.

It's a very small business he's starting. Nothing big. There will be virtual sales. I'm expecting maybe around 5-10 sales per month. Planning on using the Paypal API. There will be user interactions.

Having to code the front-end and back-end, how much would YOU charge him?

I was thinking somewhere around 4k$ USD. Is it reasonable?

[Showoff Saturday] I created a funny rhyme-finding application that uses NLP technology.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:54 PM PST

    Welcome to RhymeFind!

You plug in words like "pirate" and get back "freighter traitor", or "marriage" and get back "wife life".

It uses Django, Javascript, and Postgres, is hosted on Heroku, and uses data from GloVe vectors and the CMU pronunciation dictionary to build the rhymes. It was inspired by a reddit post from a few years ago.

All suggestions are welcome! I also have some ideas for new features if anyone wants to collaborate ;)

A newbie question. Asynch and web workers

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 04:31 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am just starting to learn JavaScript while also working on a project. me and my friend had basically created a web app for scraping and processing the data. However, i am struggling with the performance of the code. i figured it was because all scraping is done in one thread, which i want to solve. if you guys do not mind, please give me us some pointers.

The app scrapes a web site by sending GET requests. Each response from the GET request has about 100 objects in an array. The script goes thru each one of them in a for loop, and sends a certain POST request for each at the end. This, i think, slows it down a lot because, if i am not mistaken, the iteration will not continue as it waits for the call back or response from that POST request before proceeding to the next iteration (i).

    for (i=0;i<arrObj.length;i++) { //do some stuff //send POST }

The 1st thing is: is what i think correct? Does it wait for the POST response before moving on or not? The 2nd thing is: I cannot figure out how to use web-workers in a way that would do the above loop in, say 4 threads, so 4 web workers. I need several threads to speed up the processing of array of objects (arrObj), not to have 4 parallel scripts running (GET requests, loop and POST reqs as one).

Help if you can, please. And thank you.
