Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:55 PM PST ive been researching about legal and safety fees i might face, and it seems like there's a lot of hidden costs. i watched a series of this GDC video and it made me a bit concerned that ive already made some potential mistakes that he mentioned in the video. So i'm wondering for all of you game devs that have already dealt with all this bs, how much did it cost you to make sure you are covered, legally speaking? like including cost to set up an LLC, hiring lawyer and/or accountant, trademarks, paperwork and all that? and are there any optional extra protection legal fees that you didn't pay? such as trademark name registration. Repercussions of not trademarking the name of my future Steam game? Posted: 04 Jan 2020 05:26 AM PST Hello! I'm a hobbyist with an aspiration of publishing to Steam. I have formed an LLC, as it's relatively cheap in the UK to do so, but I have been back and forthing about whether or not to register a trademark. The cost is quite high for me, especially as I am not savy at legal issues and will also probably need to pay for an attorney. In the meantime, I'm investing into my own legal fund. I'm not bothered about someone making clones of my game, i.e. with the same name. I would assume that Steam also protects against this in some way, as I very rarely see clones. What I am worried about is if someone registers a trademark of my un-trademarked, published game. Thank you [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Jan 2020 02:05 AM PST It is kind of a catch-22. To release game you need to have a community already. To make a community you need a game. Are there any articles on how could you build a community? Development blog is the only way? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:09 AM PST I'd like to ask for suggestions, about books that contain stories of game developers and companies, in the form of day to day life inside their teams and anecdotal stories about game development and the industry at their time, from their point of view. The closest book I found about what I seek, is the famous "Masters of Doom". Any suggestions you can make? [link] [comments]
How do you create a good GIF for twitter? Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:49 PM PST I'm not talking about what makes a good gif, but what your process is to get nice, clean footage into a gif without sacrificing quality or length. Apparently twitter only accepts gifs under 15mb and if I understand it correctly, only displays ones smaller than 5mb on phones. And since everyone uses twitter on their phone, that basically means a hard 5mb limit. And I find it hard to get a good quality gifs smaller than around 10mb. Any advice would be appreciated. I've finally gotten to a point im proud of and I kinda want to show it off to my 3 followers (one is a bot, he's cool) [link] [comments]
What’s the best method for creating Sprite Sheets? Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:51 AM PST I'm developing a video game with a few others, and I was assigned with creating the UI and Sprite Sheets. I literally don't have any experience in creating sprite sheets, and I made an attempt at creating one in Adobe Photoshop CC 2020. I'm not entirely fond of it. I don't have much time before the sheets are due, so I'm curious as to how I should go about in creating these. These aren't like 8-Bit, 16-Bit, or 32-Bit characters either. Anyway, what is the best way to go about creating sprite sheets? [link] [comments]

Looking for video resources on technical concepts Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:15 AM PST I'm a software engineer, and at one point I worked professionally in unity (but not in an exciting way i.e. casino gaming). During my time developing casino games I worked with another engineer who was incredibly bright and loved video games. He ended up going on to actually work for a real game dev company. But during my time working with him he loved to explain to me some of the more technical aspects of game development i.e. lighting, ambiant occlusion, subsurface scattering, dithering, screenspace reflections, hdr, occlusion culling etc. While I never really got very deep into these concepts he was incredibly good at giving high level explanations so that I could wrap my head around the concepts in theory although I never took the time to implement them in practice. I was thinking about this the other night and I realized I really would love some video resources that go into these kinds of topics but I've been having trouble finding them. Can anyone recommend any good videos on the technical side of game development? Preferably from a technical, programming point of view. [link] [comments]

Unity - Network Transform Slow Rotations Posted: 04 Jan 2020 08:01 AM PST Hi! I'm trying to sync rotations in multiplayer, but when they happen so slow that we can see the sprite turning. I know that i can just turn the sprite... but it will mess up with some transform points (like the eagle following the player).I tried changing the localScale, inverting the X, and also localRotation with Quaternions (I Think in the end, they do the same thing).Any help would be appreciated :) ty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llBKBw6ZoxM /editI'm using Mirror, and these are my network transform options: https://prnt.sc/qj3not If i drop network sync interval down to 0, it will "work". But when i go to another PC, even in the same network (The ping will go from 0 to 2~3ms) the problem will happen again. I also uploaded another video, setting up the network sync interval to 1. Things got really slow, it doesn't looks like 1 second of interval at all. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5sVgW2euz8 [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:29 AM PST Hello Redditors, I've had this question for a while: Can you use those free to download sketchfab models in a paid game if you give them credit in the credits? or can you only use them in a free game? (btw I've looked over the sketchfab 'rules' and there doesn't seem to be anything about this specific question that a non-lawyer would understand). [link] [comments]
What's the Way to Move GameObjects in Unity? Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:23 AM PST Hi, Ok fairly new to Unity and game development in general. I'm still trying to understand basic development concepts and guidelines. As far as I can understand, there's two ways of moving game objects. The first is with a rigidbody using the physics engine and the second one is by the transform function. While in both cases rotation are being implemented by transform.rotation both for cameras and GameObjects. What I don't understand is, which method should be used and under what circumstances. Is one method better than the other? I'd appreciate it if someone could clarify it for me. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
