How important is it to take an intro to OS class when pursuing a career in Software Engineering?

I'm in my final semester of my degree and have an SWE job lined up. I don't need to take an OS class to graduate, as I have taken other things, but feel like it might be important knowledge to have in the workplace. It would make my schedule more challenging as I could take an easier class in its place. What are your thoughts?

How active is research in cryptography?

And which programs would be good to look at for a PhD. I'm still feeling out my options for grad school so I'm just curious about it

Automata as an area of research

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 08:32 PM PST

What areas of automata are most actively researched in CS today? Putting constraints on the question:

    • Relatively simple input provides output that is meaningful but difficult to derive by manual processes.
    • The process itself is somehow communicated to humans. Meaning - Conway's Game or Life communicates the process, black box machine learning does not.

Why does the sound from the video app take extra few seconds to stop when I switch from the video app to some other app?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 01:12 AM PST

I observed that when I navigate from YouTube app to let's say Twitter or something similar, the audio takes extra few seconds to stop. My guess is that the audio thread is not stopped while I switch from the source app and only is interrupted after I switch to the other app. But is it true though? Could it be just that the latency in audio stopping is due to something else?

I start my post-grad, full-time SDE I job in 6 months at Amazon. What can I realistically expect and how can I best prepare myself outside of coursework?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 11:13 AM PST

I don't learn my specific team assignment until 90 days prior to my start date. I'm extremely proud of myself for reaching this level and landing this job, but I expect it to be challenging, and I want to be best prepared. Does anyone have any advice for a new lad like myself?

How to save YouTube videos into file or any cloud storage, other application , etc???

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 06:51 PM PST

I'm using a music video that use YouTube music video to play(which mean if they violated something, my YouTube video music is gone).I'm concerned about the copyright, terminated user so I'm wondering what are some possibly way to keep it permanently on your computer, and able to play even after the owner of the video deleted it, or have been terminated.
