"You cannot delete (your) accounts." Is this legal in the US?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 05:53 AM PST

    Hi,

I recently stumbled upon a webapp I wanted to use, that uses a service, intuit.com, for their account management (I think it's some sort of OAuth service). Because upon account registration I had to enter a credit card number, I canceled the registration process. Nevertheless they created my account. Now I wanted to delete my account and I saw this: https://accounts-help.lc.intuit.com/questions/1590241-how-do-i-delete-my-account

So just out of curiousity I wanted to ask, wether It's legal in the US to not have an option to delete a users account, because in the EU it is defenitly not, and of course to raise awareness, so you can consider to never create an account on intuit.com. (imho: a company that doesn't allow you to break ties with them, is a shity company)

Does anyone find it really hard to talk to their partners about work, due to the general lack of understanding / knowledge of our industry by most people

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:24 AM PST

Always find it really hard to say anything more than "Yeah works been good", after my day as she literally won't understand anything else I say.

You guys deal with this at all?

I've got 7.5 years experience and am suddenly unemployed. Can I safely block/ignore the tele-recruitment calls this time around?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 01:22 PM PST

I hate them so, so much, and as an introvert they drain my battery even faster than my phone's. But I'm afraid that ignoring them means shooting myself in the foot in my job search. At this point in my career, are they worth dealing with?

How do you find the motivation to do projects outside of work?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 10:19 AM PST

I know that big part of continuing to learn and grow in development is doing projects on the side or outside of work to learn and apply new skills. I just have the hardest time finding the motivation to do anything outside of work. I work hard and kill it when I'm on the clock, and I love what I do, but when I go home I just wanna hang out with my husband and kids.

Anyone have any tips/tricks on what motivated them?

Can't select a class in chrome dev tools if there's multiple and at least one of them contains a number?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:12 PM PST

I've had this issue for a while but just dealt with it, but it's getting very annoying. If I try to select an element that has multiple classes, it does this if there's any classes with numbers inside.

I understand you can use your arrow keys to increment the numbers, but the fact that it's not allowing me to even select the text because of that with my mouse is driving me nuts.

    Any ideas?

    PHP roadmap for 2020?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:07 PM PST

As a front end dev I want to get into back end. Which path do you recommend to learn modern PHP and it's frameworks? Thanks

How long would it take to be ready for an entry level position? 0 - 100 self taught.

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 10:23 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I've recently had this realization that I no longer find my career enjoyable or interesting in any way. I was hired as a technical support engineer with some software development. But over the past few years I've done very little coding or anything worthwhile.

I've always wanted to be a web developer but I went where I could after college because I needed the money. I used to be really I to it back in high school where I ran the high school website.

How long would it take to go from 0 - job, if I put all of my time into studying and learning? I'm even considering leaving my current job. I have enough saved that I could live off of for maybe 5-6 months (if I stop going out to eat lol). I've tried studying after work but I'm so exhausted from my day job and the 1hr-1.5hr ride home that I find it difficult to keep looking at a computer screen.

What do you think? Is that a crazy misguided idea? Could I actually do it in that timeframe? I'm a little lost and just looking for advice.

    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I mean to start as a front end dev

I’d like to build a simple backend using Node JS - what’s an up to date and straightforward tutorial you can recommend?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 04:01 PM PST

Hi, I currently have a simple but fully functioning grade table app. I can add a student's name, course, and numeric grade.

The info is stored in a simple db.json file. I'd like to learn how I can build a proper backend using node (and either MongoDB or prostgresql) so that I can deploy it publicly.

    Thank you!

    Let talk about time sheets

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:57 PM PST

If you work 40 hours per week as a Web Dev or something similar; how many hours a day are billable on your timesheet? I'm curious bc I was told at work that I need to to stop putting general time on my timesheet. I feel as though no human can be focused for 8 hours a day. Every second of the day can't be billable. And everyday is different some days are more productive than others.

Does anyone have a fully ADA compliant website?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:42 PM PST

I have an upcoming project to make the company's website ADA compliant according to WCAG 2.1. but the requirements feel overwhelming.

I installed a Chrome Extension called "Siteimprove Accessibility Checker" that points out all the parts that are not compliant and not even Google's home page completely passes.

I was just wondering if anyone follows the guidelines perfectly?

So, what the hell is a full stack developer?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 06:44 AM PST

    Hi,

I've been reading this and other webdev related subs for a while now and have seen many definitions of the term. If someone were to present themselves as a fullstack developer to you, would you consider it a buzzword? What business activities would you expect them to solve?

    Looking forward to your opinions!

Question on the history of CSS class and id selectors

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 03:26 PM PST

Sometimes knowing the history of something helps me remember it. Is there a reason why class selectors are a dot (.) while ids are a pound/hash (#)?

How much time do you spend on each side project?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 02:59 PM PST

I seem to have the problem of projects that take too long (weeks) so I tend to end up completely bored with them and already starting with a new project by the time I approach completion. I don't know if I'm spending too much time and burning out on projects because of this.

I'm a uni student, final year with no experience, so I'm hoping having projects will help in some way.

How do I create a game like skribbl.io?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 12:41 PM PST

Hey guys, I want to create a simple game where you'd have to guess a special point on the world map. It should include multiplayer like skribbl. I know that I'd have to get a server and things like that but other than that: How do I start? What do I need? I do have knowledge in JS, HTML, CSS and a bit other things that probably aren't required tho. Just a brief instruction would help me a lot.
