Is there any online web dev hackathons coming up? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:57 PM PST Alright, I'm bored and running out of ideas. I know there are hackathons but I can't find any online hackathons to join that are based around HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Are there any upcoming ones that you guys know about? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:27 PM PST Basically what the title says. I want to be able to use multiple files in my project for organization sake, and don't want to use a framework like React, View, etc. because its a small website that will be have a fair bit of novel effects, that would become more complicated if I was building on a framework. Can this simply be achieved using vanilla node? I know you can require functions and files, but does node have a commands like react build or something. Anyway, any recommendations are appreciated. Desiring feedback on first project. Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:57 PM PST So Im a completely self taught dev, that has only really learned to code through books and YouTube videos. Unfortunately I have a lack of feedback or others to code with or ask questions so I tend to probably have a lot of bad practices. I work full-time at a shitty stressful job and have taught myself during breaks or time off. I have tried to join de meetup groups for help but my shitty job and hours doesn't give me time to do that. I have a work in progress that im trying to build using js/react/css. This is the first project I've built on my own without a tutorial. My goal for this was to practice creating content using different apis and having it look somewhat presentable. I used some free movie apis to try and make a entertainment news site with top movie/tv show descriptions and trailers. It also has a sign-up/sign-in feature using localstate. This was not easy for me and took a lot of trial and error. The styles are not that great because I have not really studied much css yet, all my time has been learning JavaScript and framework. Any feedback at all is appreciated. There are definitely some parts not working 100% yet or is wonky, but I've been trying my best. Is this decent enough to put in my portfolio and show employers, or does it need a lot of work? Thank you. How do I structure data/db for my web app? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:39 PM PST Hello, I am building a web app using front end + flask and sqlalchemy. I want users to be able to store a table of items (name, price, date, ect.), but I want each table to be unique when they register for the site. Like one user's DB be different than anothers. Should I create a new DB every time the user authenticates, and have a ton of tables on my server with the user as the title? Or should I have one long list of items, and have a foreign key or some other key that points to the user so every time they login their data queries from the big table for their username or something. It may seem better performance wise to create a table per user so it can pull all data to the website instead of querying it What do you guys think? Thank you. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:35 AM PST Everywhere I see on YouTube all I find are projects guides/tutorials called "how to make a complete website" etc but all they use is HTML and CSS and if you're lucky you get some Js. Being interested in backend as a beginner I'd love to have some tutorials where the person first build the website using HTML and CSS and then adds some APIs, Payment gateways some basic backend structure maybe while explaining it all properly. Like a fully working website ready to be deployed. Any suggestions for such YouTube video projects ? [link] [comments]
Seeking UI web dev for ft contract gig Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:04 PM PST Seeking a front-end developer, preferably in the Mountain Time Zone. Full-time contract gig, duration of about a year. Looking for a UI pro, preferably with C#/MVC experience. [link] [comments]
How can I deploy a ASP.NET Core WebApp onto a Raspberry Pi? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:16 AM PST Hi there I have a Raspberry Pi 3 B+. Over the past few months, I have been working on a side project and I can soon deploy it into production. It's going to be in private use don't worry ;) I'm currently using Azure DevOps for my repositories and I came across Azure Pipelines. Azure Pipelines make it possible for me to deploy my code on any platform. I would prefer using this technology in order to have Continuous Integration. I have several questions for the setup of my Pi.
Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
2020 Web Best Practice CSSGrid/FlexBox/Other Posted: 30 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST I am working on a requirements document for a new site and want to identify what will be the best model to request the site to be built on whether it be a css framework, grid, flexbox, or something I'm not think of. Background info: in the past 12 months the site has seen 30% mobile traffic, 17% IE traffic (20% is <IE10) with an older demographic. Previous site was completed in 2016 on a modified bootstrap framework on a .net white label cms. [link] [comments]
Need Advice: Moving Project From 18 Years of Cowboy Coding to a Team-Driven Effort Posted: 30 Dec 2019 01:07 PM PST TL;DR; Was just promoted to "team lead" role on a "mature" SAAS project. What can I do to make my future team efficient? About 6 months ago I accepted a position as a senior full stack developer on a SAAS project for a local company. This project essentially 18 years of development by my boss, admittedly written "in a bubble" and without concern that someone else might have to one day work on the code. I've been working here for 6 months and just now feel a little "dangerous." There is no documentation. There are no real standards to speak of. Everything is proprietary. There are no common libraries that might offer a new developer some familiarity. Since I was hired I spearheaded the following efforts:
Last week I got promoted to "software team lead." This essentially means I'm helping to hire more developers, to manage them, and to have a role in guiding the technical aspects of our product going forward. Being a recent hire myself I know that my new employees are going to have a hard time. Before I bring them on board I want to do everything possible to make their transition to a productive member of my team far more efficient than my transition was. I've only done software development ever worked for this company and for my own clients when I was self-employed (since 2002). So I'm curious what the process looks like elsewhere, and what I can do to make our project better for new team members. Here are my ideas:
Adopting some of these things will be very easy. Adopting some of them will be very hard, because my boss's code tends to not be so simple to work with using modern methodologies. [link] [comments]
How do I overcome feeling my code will be scrutinized? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:54 PM PST I began coding in highschool in 2001 and I did all of my learning through books. A few years later, I use to post small projects on public forums. A lot of the more experienced developers at the time complete put me down for my poor programming practices and lack of knowledge and I developed this phobia of having other developers look at my work. Over the last 15 years, this has had a significant impact on my growth. I never pursued software development (even though as a hobbyist, I enjoy writing code and learning new languages). I took the sys admin route, because I'm only writing scripts and nobody cares. I don't engage in code sharing on github, I avoid meetups like the plague. I've made some personal successful projects in the past but I know my skills are severely limited due to the fact that I simply have not collaborated with more experienced developers. I want to grow as a developer, do I need to go to a therapist? [link] [comments]
[crosspost from /u/web_design] Recommendations for converting an application from Windows to web? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:38 PM PST Hello, Eight years ago I built a Windows application to generate official reports for a farmer. He has been using this app since then, and this current year he started asking for new features, these features are interesting and I want to distribute my software to other customers. After talking to the him, he agrees that a web version will be easier for all: he can use the application from his mobile, I can make real backups, more people can use the software (so more people will be improving it) and it's easier for me to develop and update (I've moved from Delphi to web application with Symfony years ago). The application itself is really simple: it just uses some tables showing some records, forms for adding or modifying records (less than 10 fields per record, and simple widgets like textfields, comboboxes and datetimepickers) and it generates reports in PDF format. Technically, I have no problems rewriting this application as a web application using Symfony 4/5 or something like this. Well, I have just one problem: I'm not good at designing nice looking web applications. I'm good at old Win32 UI, but I'm not used at webapps. So, any tips about building nice looking (and easy to use!) web applications? I don't want a GUI builder, just some tips, recomendations, UI toolkits (they exist?), etc... Keep in mind that I only know a little of Bootstrap and jQuery, I haven't used anything like React, Vue or Angular. Also, keep in mind that this app will be mainly used from computers with "real screens" (at least 21"). It can be used from mobiles, but the main work will be done at home. Thank you! Trouble implementing smoothscroll in Scrollspy (Javascript) Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:38 PM PST I am taking a course on Udemy about HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. I was able to implement Scrollspy into the project. The relevant navbar element gets highlighted when you scroll through the respective section of the page. However, after trying to implement Smoothscroll in the way the course outlined, it is not working properly. My project can be found here: https://github.com/nsethupathi/FirstSite I found the following code for Smoothscroll from Stack Overflow (the first answer): https://stackoverflow.com/questions/14804941/how-to-add-smooth-scrolling-to-bootstraps-scroll-spy-function I created a file for this code in smoothscroll.js and changed the first line to
since navbar-collapse is my class with the unordered list of list elements. I added the following line to the bottom of my index.html code.
However, the navbar links no longer work after this implementation, and I'm not sure why. I have noticed that when i move up the above script element a few lines, to being the first script element after the footer, the links work again, but without the smooth scroll. Not sure what is happening, any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
The future of web development? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:12 PM PST Curious to see what others think... What do you think is the future of web development? Everyone says automation and that developers will become obsolete etc... I don't think we can automate anything that would start to replace developers for decades. Just seems too complex to automate front end and back-end, Design HTML/CSS i can see no code taking over some of that within the next few years? What do you think? Will development be automated or will developers be relevant for decades to come? Love to hear some opinions! [link] [comments]
Told to post here instead of web design, desktop support to web? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:26 AM PST Help desk/desktop support possible transition to web development I'm currently in desktop support and have been for a few years. I enjoy technology and generally enjoy my job. With that being said occasionally I have thought about pursuing web development. I have an associates of applied science degree with a focus in it, but it's been so long since I've used any of it, I'm barely able to start an HTML document. I can relearn HTML, CSS and learn JavaScript (also PHP?) no problem though, I understand those are necessary. My questions are, if I decided to do this, can I use the things created from a book, or a Udemy course in a portfolio? More so, would that be enough to get a junior position? I'd rather work for somewhere at least starting out. More importantly, I do have a family, so a pay cut would be out of the question for the most part. I live in the Dallas area, and am pulling in around 50k. Is it possible to start around that or higher? [link] [comments]

Bots have more than doubled the cost of our Pantheon hosting plan Posted: 30 Dec 2019 11:35 AM PST Hey everyone, since 4 months ago the company I work for has been getting absolutely slammed with bots that have driven up our website hosting costs from $150 to $400 which unfortunately isn't in our budget. I've looked into using Cloudflare along with the pantheon CDN but this isn't guaranteed to fix the issue, is there any services or procedures we can run through to remove this bot traffic? I am the only web developer for several of these sites and our resources are limited. We compared our analytics to that of Pantheon but they denied any issues and simply forced us i to the new plan stating that they have done this for several thousand sites in the past few months. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
How to find a mentor with learning web development? Posted: 30 Dec 2019 11:12 AM PST I'm not sure if this post is going against the rules but if it does I'm sure it'll be deleted so don't worry. I would have posted this to the learn web dev subreddit but it seems pretty dead. How can a person find a mentor when it comes to learning web development? I've been studying and working with html/css for the last 6-7 months and I'm about to start on javascript this January. I really enjoy front end web development and I do wanna make a career out of it. The issue is though I have no one to talk to about it. None of my friends are into it and I'm sure my girlfriend is tired of me showing her a site I built and asking her what she thinks about it and if she has any critiques. It would be nice to talk to someone who is in the field already who I could ask general questions/career questions, critique some of my web designs, and if I'm even going in the right direction when it comes to what I'm studying. I'm about to turn 28 in the next few months and I have so many doubts if I'll even make it because of my age. I've seen so many posts where people get hired after only 6 months to 12 months of learning front end development that it makes me nervous because I don't really consider myself hireable where I'm at now. There is also so much to learn and so many different paths that people recommend that I don't even no where to start after learning html/css and javascript. I'll quit rambling now. I just wanted to see if someone had any advice on finding someone who can be a bit of a mentor for me because I'm sure I'm not the only person who has struggled with this issue when learning web development. Posted: 30 Dec 2019 02:19 AM PST Hello world. Im learning on my own front end web development. But im worried abou job opportunities because i hear a lot that its saturated and the competition for entry level jobs is huge especially for remote positions. Is the supply bigger than demand? Should i keep investing in this? [link] [comments]
File path problems from VSCode to Github Posted: 30 Dec 2019 10:22 AM PST I am super new to programming (since June) and am redoing my school's website. I've been building it in VSCode and using Live Server extension to view it. I've pushed my code to github in preparation for some QAing and am having an issue with broken file paths. What works fine on VSCode doesn't work in Github and vice versa. For instance, just going off of the scripts running the page: This works in VSCode, but not Github. If I remove a ../ it works in Github but not VSCode. The tree is: hs.test (root) ---> academics ---> departments --->agriculture.html But then I go to hs.test (root) ---> academics ---> departments --->computerscience --->index.html and ../../../ works just fine on github and VSCode. So then logically wouldn't going one more out result in ../../ working? I do not get it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:43 PM PST 2 years ago I looked at the options for distributing applications, and came to the conclusion that PWAs were the wave of the future and the way to go. Now heading into 2020 I am still being nagged by websites left and right with huge banners exhorting me to 'download the app!' Is the idea dead in the water? The browser can do so much these days, and I personally CBA installing new apps. But I'm a technical person, not Joe Instagrampack. Non-technical people I talk to IRL are still talking about downloading apps and they prefer not to visit websites on their phone if there's an alternative. Would love to hear some thoughts.
