Are Text Adventure games still worth creating?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:00 AM PST

I have yet to ever do anything with programming and don't start my college major in it for another 2 months. I want to get my foot in the door of creating a good narrative before school by producing a text only game. Is there still a playerbase for these sorts of games if I post it up online for free?

I created a multiplayer PvP game with a game studio... and now I’m stuck

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:07 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Over the last couple months I've had a game created by a game studio. The studio followed the baseline specifications of the premise we had set out.

Please find a video of the game here

    https://vimeo.com/376395810

The game was made in unity, and our major issue is now that it lacks flair and overall doesn't inspire interest to want to play it. It's a multiplayer PvP battle ground game where you earn real life rewards by playing.

Since I'm not a game designer myself, I've ventured into territory that is foreign to me.

    I would like to humbly request your input on the following;

    1. What do you think of the game?

    2. Is it possible to work on the base code to give the game more flair and attraction, or better to abandon most of it?

    3. What do you think could be improved to bridge this gap?

Our worry is that a game like this will never garner users. We feel it is not up to par with what you'd expect on the App Store.

Good money was paid for the creation of this game. Am I completely ignorant to compare a game like this with a tanks game like the following? And, could the game still be saved by adding this level of profundity somehow or will loading times be horrid? So many questions that my incompetence doesn't garner answers for..

    https://vimeo.com/376397471

I would love to hear your constructive feedback and thank you kindly in advance!

I've released ModLab 1.4 (Free) which now supports Normal map from Sprite's alpha

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:31 AM PST

ModLab is free software that generates and combine Normal maps from diffuse and height maps. First release offered "Horizontal profile" function which let user to add any shape on horizontal axis using intuitive curve editor.

To address illusion of volume better, I've added ability to generate normal map based on sprite's alpha (thus its volume) and once again modify said volume through curve editor.

Normal map from Alpha in action, detail normal map generated from diffuse

Use of curve editor to shape the volume

Blur function used on kinda cute Skeleton sprite, credits to Irina Mir (irmirx)

ModLab is completely free and downloadable on Steam (I am not including link because of automoderator, but I believe it is fairly easy to find).

    2D Web based MMORPG

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:49 AM PST

Is it actually possible to make a 2D web based mmorpg using JS technologies, something like Pixi or Phaser for example?

Would the client technology here matter much or would the technical difficulties be mainly server based?

I'm thinking perhaps this kind of thing requires a ton of server work, optimization and creating utilities and such?

Using Hum3d 3D models in a commercial video game.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

    Hi.

If I'm making a video game based around vehicles and I buy 3D models of Vehicles from Hum3d (say I buy the model of a Range Rover), will I be allowed to use that in a commercial video game that I'm selling on Steam? Will I need permission from Land Rover?

    Thanks.

What's the best engine for UI-based strategy?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:58 AM PST

I currently, and have for years, used Gamemaker Studio to make games. I want to make UI based strategy or RPG games (see games by Paradox Interactive or Democracy 3). Is it plausible (ik it's possible) to make these kinds of games in Gamemaker. If not, what should I use? I can code in HTML reasonable proficiently as well as, of course, GML but don't have a clue about much else.

If you could, please also point me toward some tutorials on making games like this in Gamemaker, or basic tutorials in whatever you suggest.

I'd rather stick with Gamemaker because I know it well, so keep that in mind. I also only wanna make simple games. I'm not that deluded!

Can pixel-scaling be used to indicate interactive objects?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:23 AM PST

I am making a game in pixel art. Would it look good if the background tiles and scenery were in 16 by 16 whereas the interactive objects like characters were 32 by 32, in order to distinguish the two? Would this make a nice style?
