Is it normal as a Web Developer to do things at work that you’ve never done before?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 05:24 AM PDT

To my experienced Web Devs out there, do you sometimes have to do work that you've never done before? Is that normal? Or do you eventually get to the point where you feel like you know what you are doing. Or is that feeling of "Idk but I know enough to figure it out" never goes away? I'm asking bc I'm self taught and in my first year of real world experience. So I'm feeling a little insecure when I have to do a task that I've never done before and it may take me a few extra hours to figure it out or research or to learn through trial and error. I'm wondering if its because I'm self taught or if that's normal for Entry level dev. On the flip side I like to think, learn and be challenged so I enjoy it and I think that's what being a programmer is all about.

[Showoff Saturday] A JavaScript quiz app that you can use to improve your JS skills and contribute to!

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 12:40 PM PDT

In the past week, I created this gatsby-based javascript quiz app based on some quizzes I was posting on twitter. The reception has been pretty good! I since opened up the app to contributions and have received a lot of great PRs, ranging from very experienced devs looking to share their knowledge to first time contributors (I find it really heartening to get someone his or her first PR!).

The questions can at times be challenging or tricky, so I tell people not to be discouraged by them. The correct rate appears to be ~50%, although a larger sample size is probably needed. I think the real "payoff" is the explanations that (hopefully) really drive home the core concepts.

I'm hoping this can both be a great resource to hone JS skills and also practice contributing to open source projects. I welcome your feedback on the app, additional questions, or what have you.

    Here is the app: https://quiz.typeofnan.dev

And the repo if you're interested in contributing (again, first timers absolutely welcome and encouraged!): https://github.com/nas5w/typeofnan-javascript-quizzes

Showoff Saturday: I made an open-source full-stack website, looking for some feedback.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 10:15 AM PDT

Hey, after working for a couple of months on my full-stack website - Randome

Stack: Node, Express, MongoDB, Firebase, React

You can view it here: https://randome-site.herokuapp.com/

I don't want to say what the site is about because I kinda want the feedback if it is clear and intuitive enough at first glance.

There are still some things I want to change/add. I just want some feedback. especially on the editor (when you create a new randomizer) and if you find any bugs please let me know.

The entire source code is available on Github https://github.com/avivbiton/Randome

    Thank you

Just a word of caution on using free services like AWS to build a portfolio.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 11:25 PM PDT

Just thought I'd pass along something that happened to me recently. I know it's probably common sense for a lot of folks, but beware of the limitations of using some of the "free" resources out there when expirimenting and building your portfolio. In the process of going through some tutorials last year, I signed up for a few things that I thought were completely free but I probably should have read the fine print because the AWS free tier and Elastic Beanstock storage that I signed up for wasn't completely free and I started incurring about $9-$10 (edit: per month) worth of fees a few months ago.

I just found out today because I happened to be looking for something in one of my spam folders for an email address I had set aside for these projects. Apparently they had been emailing me statements that show I now owe them $28. It's not going to break the bank, but it is a totally unneccessary cost if I just had paid more attention. The worst part is not the money though, it is taking time out of my weekend to search for answers on how to close my account through their confusing and unfamiliar interface and having to create a support ticket and wait for an answer.

[SHOWOFF SATURDAY] Website to automatically create a portfolio based on github projects & user added submissions/Connect with Developers from current and future projects based on Skills

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 03:51 PM PDT

I've posted about this project before, but as I keep updating, I'm going to post again for feedback!

In case you haven't seen my post before, I've been working on a platform for 2 purposes:

    • Quickly/Easily creating a portfolio for developers or designers pulled directly from their github account.
    • Allow Developers to post their skills and see possible projects they can request to help with or in reverse, you as dev can find others to help you with your projects!

This is still certainly a work in progress. The portfolio aspect is pretty much functional and I'm still building out the developer connections. However I would still love for you seasoned developers to give me your feedback on Design, UI/UX and overall usefulness.

    Check it out!

Besides computer science what is an alternative degree that is good for front end developer

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 06:49 AM PDT

Hey guys right now I have an associates in web development and is still looking for my first job. I really don't want to get into the workforce until I have a bachelor's. My started off with backend and really didn't like it as much compared to frontend . I don't want to get a bachelor in computer science because of financial reasons and time. The schools I want to go to wgu or asu will offer me half the credits i need for a bachelor in digital media or information technology. My question is that besides a computer science degree what are alternative degrees that will benefits me to become a front end developer.

Tdlr: I have the option to get a digital technology degree or information technology bachelor at an accelerated pace. Is this a good path for me and what other degree is worth it that is not computer science or software developmen

    I'm stuck.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 03:19 PM PDT

    Dear Reddit,

I am doing a project where I'm making an multi product quantity based order platform for a small in company in my town. I have almost everything set up. I got the customer and product management done. I'm only having a really hard time managing the orders. I've got the order and order_items tables set up, my only problem is that I don't know how to process the inputs into the database.

I hope that someone could give me some advice. I am happy to answers any further questions.

    Thanks in advance.

    AWS MVP costs?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 03:03 PM PDT

    Hi all! 👋

I have a wix website that works a bit like the popular freelancer websites and brings people together for various projects. I'd like to migrate it to AWS and to have a good chatbot with all sorts of useful features, like conferencing and file transfers, and want the various sign up features and talent search to be done automatically via a database with various tagging systems.

How much should I expect to pay for an MVP and how much should that prototype be able to do for its users?

    Cheers!

    Free or cheap SSL hosting

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 02:16 PM PDT

I have been hosting a hobbyist blogging site with Heroku until today. I have decided to move away from Heroku after a bad experience with billing and general management of my domain. I own a .dev domain name through Google--I am not very willing to spend more than the yearly cost of the domain name. Since it's a .dev address, I need SSL for it to work (wish I had known that before buying the domain).

I'm looking for a free or (very) cheap service to host my site. I was looking at GitHub pages (the repo is already hosted on GitHub), but I'm not sure if it would work with my Django back-end. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
