Been working as a junior web developer for almost a month now and REACT is kicking my a**! Posted: 16 Oct 2019 06:40 AM PDT Damn. It's been close to a month now and I feel like I don't know shit. The project I am working on right now uses React and Firebase and there is a component for everything like input field, button, drop-down, list etc and at times it feels just too much. A lot of the things go slightly over my head. There are some days when I am able to fix the errors all by myself and there are days where I can't fix any without help. And then I feel pathetic and go home and study some more. Is this normal? How were your first few months as a junior developer? Any tips on dealing with this? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Feel like I've lost my passion since becoming lead Posted: 16 Oct 2019 02:29 PM PDT About 2 years ago I was promoted to lead Dev of a team of 6 developers. At first I loved it; learning more about pitching and managing people. I got to see behind the curtain a little and I really liked being the person people went to for help. But lately it feels like my entire day is spent speaking with clients, and just telling people what to do. I never really build anything anymore; I don't get to do any of the interesting research type work because I just don't have time. So, whenever anything comes up like building the new starter kit for Umbraco (we've recently switched from another CMS to Umbraco), I have to give that work to one of my senior Devs; because I just would never have the time to do that myself. I don't know what to do. I think I need to find a way to reset a balance and find time to work on exciting Dev projects, but I'm having a hard time really identifying what that project would even be. It can't really be anything we do day to do because that's all very deadline driven and I'd just end up jeopardising client deadlines. Work is just becoming a people management sim. I'm middle management defined and I just don't get to dev. Unless I'm working after hours to catch up on a deadline, then it's just no fun. I don't really know what I'm asking for, but I just feel like I need to talk about this. [link] [comments]

My First Portfolio - Looking for some feedback! Posted: 16 Oct 2019 10:35 AM PDT Link to portfolio - https://josephoravbiere.com/ Hi all, I've been looking to get into web developing for quite some time and have been learning and coding for the past few months. I've pretty much finished working on my portfolio barring a couple of minor I'll need to work but I figured I'd post it as this is how it would look and hoping to get some feedback. I also had a question on if there were any free tools that will allow me to test my sites on mobile browsers as it looks like some of my apps look slightly different on those verses on a desktop browser. Appreciate your time and assistance! [link] [comments]

Strategies for learning an existing code base? Posted: 16 Oct 2019 01:50 PM PDT I'm joining an established project and I'm looking for strategies to get up to speed so that I can contribute as quickly as possible. What do you guys do? [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT This is a task I'm experimenting with largely out of circumstance but I'm hitting some frustrating roadblocks. I started with wordpress thought I'd start small got a page done and decided to see what it was like to throw in some ads which even adsense advised me could be easily done with some plugin that I don't remember the name of because as it turns out wordpress "free plan" doesn't let you use plugins. So I figured no biggie I'll just do it manually except now every search gives me a general idea on how I could insert the code into the header except wordpress also doesn't seem to actually offer anyway to directly manipulate the headers code itself. Worse yet, if I use the "Code Viewer" option it's almost like the header is completely omitted since the code present only accounts for the "blocks" and none of the core functionality seems to be presented there(while search results acts as if "<header></header>" should just be there). That's likely also due to my own ignorance, but when articles are explaining the header as an option I can click on and add then I do kind of expect to be able to at least see what they saw along the way even abstractly. The same occurs when I want to change the color of the page. Search results state I can do so just by changing the backgrounds value and yet those parameters are never made available to me to adjust in the first place(at least, not where the articles claim they should be). It's almost like we weren't even using the same program and maybe we weren't because.... As I hear wordpress.org is actually the bandwagon everyone's on except, in order to use that version I need a domain. Seemed simple searched up free domain and turns out the domains are easy to come by but nobody will give you one unless you also subscribe to their service. Another dead end of course and an excruciatingly frustrating one because so many people present it as if it is actually a free option. That might be technically true, but practically speaking it's a dead end(for me at least). Liquidity right now is a total zero, I probably need to find 2 new jobs when I'm out, and the hospitals going to need their cut too so it doesn't matter to me if BlueHost or whoever is cutting me a deal because I saw some article when I have not a dime to offer and likely won't for a while. This probably looks more like a (bitchy) rant but to constantly run into these stupid f-ing paywalls for every little thing is really driving me up the wall. It's not like I'm at the stage where I need to worry about monetization but right now my primary goal is to have successfully crafted a single page with all the elements I know every single page in the future will have, which inevitably will probably lead to ads as well. Perhaps wordpress is just not suited for this sort of task or is there simply no mechanism at all to accomplish this? A proper mechanism to deploy ads through base wordpress is ideal but at this point I'll abandon it outright if there's a better alternative. [link] [comments]

Is varnish still worth setting up? (wordpress) Posted: 16 Oct 2019 04:42 PM PDT I setup varnish the other day in a lamp/centos plesk stack. Didn't know this until after setting it up but I found out that varnish only works with http and not https. I have found that there are some workaround options to get it to work with https but is it even worth it? [link] [comments]
Skills test for a job interview Posted: 16 Oct 2019 04:42 PM PDT So. During an online assessment something interesting happened. I was asked to open a .psd file (which I now know is a Photoshop extension) and given an hour to mock it up in HTML. However, I don't have Photoshop on my computer. So when I tried to open the file, it gave me a bunch of code. Once I threw that into VScode and formatted it...it turns out that it's the HTML for the file they sent me. Since I can't view the image as they wanted to send it, I was wondering what you guys thought about me copy/pasting the HTML that I got and dropping it into the assessment, with a note saying what happened. Maybe they'll give me points for not reinventing the wheel there? I dunno. I'm a bit torn on what to do here. [link] [comments]

How to create a fade in animation for a background image? Posted: 16 Oct 2019 09:49 AM PDT I know this is quite a noob question, but I am just that when it comes to css and js. Can someone help me out with this? As always, I am thankful and greatful for all your suggetions! [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:31 PM PDT What programming languages would be optimal to query large amounts of legal information and present conclusions about them? How would you get access to information about the courts and attorneys? Are there databases for that which are only available to licensed attorneys? Are there any programming languages that are better suited to data analytics than others? And what would be needed to bring all this information to the web? If these are the wrong questions to be asking, please let me know. And if so, it wiuld be great if you could let me know what the right questions are. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
I have a "song sorter" from GitHub, and I need to get the end results table sent to a Google Sheet. Posted: 16 Oct 2019 09:23 AM PDT Here it is, I have just forked it from the original dev, basically you vote for which of two songs you like best until a list of each song, ordered by preference is created at the end. I want to add in functionality that will send this table to a particular Google Sheet upon completion. Any ideas at all would be really appreciated! Here is the GitHub link. https://github.com/Psychochria/song-sorter/tree/master/assets [link] [comments]
Requests for suggestions on free web hosting platform? Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:07 PM PDT Hi Redditors, I need your help and expertise. I am a noob when it comes to webdev, I've done a bit of html, css, and javascript like over 5 years ago when I was still studying in school. The most I've ever built was my own personal website using github to host the website. I didn't really like html and css that much because it was just a pain to try and design the website and position things and get everything aligned the way you want. However, I do have lots of experience in java, C++, and python which should be translatable to figuring my ways around javascript again but I really don't want to deal with things like html and css since I remember it was a real pain. Has there been any frameworks or libraries over the years that made that side of things easier and also include allowing options with ease of embedding ads? I have an application in Python that I would like to convert over to javascript and put it on the web for people to use. Are there any tools out there that can allow me to do that without paying any subscription fees? I would like to stray away from hosting on a paid platform. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Project notes and todos files in project directory (personal projects) Posted: 16 Oct 2019 03:06 PM PDT Do you guys keep a markdown or text file in your project directory for todos or notes about the project? Or do you use github projects or some other project management app external from the project. I'm just curious to see what other people do. Thanks [link] [comments] |
