[Showoff Saturday] NSFW I've made my own porn search engine out of over 45 mio. porn videos from 40 tubes. My first real side project since '11 (I think).

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 07:19 AM PDT

I have made prefap.com my own porn search engine b/c all the existing ones either don't have enough porn tubes indexed or won't let you combine categories.

Already indexed over 45 mio. porn videos from 40 tubes. Combine standardised categories across porn sites to find the perfect video. Narrow it down with animated thumbnails, video quality, (tube) view count & (tube) video rating.

It's all written in PHP/Laravel. I don't have a computer science background and am fully self taught. So this was a really big side project for me to take on. It's 100% custom made by myself so feel free to ask any technical question regarding it or Laravel. I will do my best to answer them.

I never really realized how much the internet feels like it's catered towards Chrome (or maybe not Safari) after I started using Safari fairly often for simple web browsing.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 07:52 AM PDT

When I'm not developing, and I'm using my MBP unplugged, I like to use Safari, as my laptop power drains much more slowly and the temperature is nearly half that of the temperature when using Chrome.

However, I've noticed that some web applications just don't function well on Safari, like YouTube for instance. When you full-screen a video on YouTube, rather than just going to 100vh/100vw, 100% width/ 100% height, or what have you, it opens up on another window. This prevents me from scrolling down and reading the comments or choosing other videos to watch in the "Up Next" sidebar. This forces me to go through two steps to do what I want on Safari, whereas it's only one step in Chrome. It's small, but the difference in UX is clear, and it only becomes more clear for websites, where the difference just ends up being flat out annoying to deal with.

There are also some websites I use for watching anime or doing game-related things (information, competitive research, etc.), and those websites don't really function as well on Safari.

Sorry, this is just a small rant, but it's an interesting difference I noticed.

Is there Heroku/Netlify equivalent for mobile apps?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 09:25 AM PDT

I'm looking to beef up my portfolio with some projects I made with Flutter. With my web projects I was able to use Heroku and Netlify to deploy them for free so I could still show them off without having them come up in search results. Besides deploying my apps to the app store itself is there any way to host a virtual emulator running my app that I could use to show others?

    Laptop for webdev advice

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 04:24 PM PDT

    Hi r/webdev!

I just got my first job as a programmer and I am looking to buy a proper machine to work with. We basically do web development with Python and React. My brother works at Apple and has some employee reductions so I was thinking to get him to buy one for me but I am not sure which model. The Air looks nicer than the Macbook Pro and also cheaper but I am not sure if it is capable enough! Gaming laptops at the same price range also seem to be great value spec-wise but maybe a bit overkill, especially their gpu's.

    Sorry I am a bit confused ^^'

Is it possible to compare prices from two+ marketplaces?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 04:23 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Im quite new to web development, but just had an idea and basically was just wondering if it was possible, what tools you might use and how much work would be involved. I dont really have any intention to try to create it - atleast not in the present but i was interested.

The website would be able compare prices, but not from retailers. From sites such as eBay, Facebook Market place, shpock. etc etc the main two i am interested in are eBay and FB Marketplace. Also you would need to be able to filter results using alot of eBay filters to get a closer match.

    Any info appreciated.

    Mix and match apparel

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 03:51 PM PDT

Hi folks, going making a mix and match section for an e-commerce site which sells GAA sports gear. Ideally the user could select multiple items and they would then be shown together to see how they would look. Is there a JS library I can use to help if not, tips/advice be appreciated.

how to speed up image load on a site?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 03:15 PM PDT

I built a custom CMS and in the front end there are huge images and take 2 years to load on the page. What are some ways that I can speed up the image load time? The client gave us the images and some of them are huge. Idk what to do about it. Also it is a Laravel app. I was thinking of creating an api route that will return the requested image and a specific width/height. But that would mean the each image would have 2 requests, 1 to get the image path and the other to get the image in a specific size. For example: /api/[path]?width=234&height=345

Does anybody need any stock images for a project? (Free!)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 03:14 PM PDT

So I was about to cancel my Adobe Stock subscription, but noticed that I have 93 unused stock photo licenses that would go to waste if I do. Does anybody need anything in particular for a project they're working on?

If not, do you have any suggestions for some types of images I should grab that I'm more likely to use in the future for a client project?

    First come first serve!

Edit: just comment what you'd like and I'll DM you. If somebody already mentioned something then just tag along on their comment. If you have a specific request just include the File# from stock.adobe.com along with a description of what it is.

Is it possible to extend the chrome pdf viewer through the Chrome extension api?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 02:57 PM PDT

Essentially I want to find certain words in the pdf document and do 2 things:

1 - Find the x-y location of the word (to place an invisible clickable element above it)

2 - change the color of the word (make it look like a link)

Would this be possible without replacing the chrome pdf viewer?

Recently landed my first freelance job. Any of ideas of how to go about calculating the amount of time it will take and how much to charge?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 01:53 PM PDT

The company wants me to create a dashboard and a logotype for an already existing user base. The process is currently being done manually and my mission is to automate it due to user growth.

I don't want to disclose too much information but I need to: - create a logotype - enable users to log in/create an account via a third-party authorization - retrieve some data through api - present said data and keep it updated daily - send email-notifications to users weekly - invite friends to use app - add friends enabling them to watch each others "stats" - design dashboard

I will build the front end with react and the backend will be based on node.js. Any thoughts regarding the topic or general tips how to go about the project is much appreciated.

How can I run a python script that takes input and outputs to my website. Both hosted on the same VPS.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2019 09:48 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am making a python script which runs an analysis of live team information of a video game "League of Legends" based on the input of the user on my front-end website.

How do I communicate data from my website to the python script such as the username variable for example? In return how do I output python to a fancy front-end website rather than the console which I have been doing.

They will be both hosted on the same VPS. Website is running PHP.

    Thanks
