uBlock Origin will no longer work with Safari as of MacOS Catalina.

Also the authors of UBO in this post say the same is true for Chrome and I quote "Chrome will itself be ending support for uBlockOrigin soon"

Freelancers - do you market yourself as a contractor or as a development company?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 11:32 AM PDT

I'm in two minds whether how to market my self and the services I provide. I was going to start a small indie development agency/company (mainly to target bigger clients) but now I'm thinking whether I would be better off branding myself as a freelancer/contractor instead.

Love to know what/how you guys brand yourself.

How often do you switch jobs?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 05:05 AM PDT

I get the feeling that most people tend to switch jobs a lot. I might be the oddball here, so here are my questions:

    • How often do you switch jobs?
    • (Un-)voluntarily?
    • How many jobs did you have in how many years in the field?
    • What was the main motivation? Money? Learning chances?

My example: 3 Jobs in 9 years, including my current employment.

1 voluntary switch (from 1 year of freelancing to employment), 1 unvoluntary (company shrinking, after 6 years)

My only switch was because of stability, but I could imagine money being my motivation for the next switch.

Front End or Back End first?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 10:25 AM PDT

I am building personal projects but I am a little conflicted where to start first. Do you people start with Front End or Back End first? What are the advantages of starting with either of them first?

    Thanks for any tips

Looking for resources to work on back-end! Would love some tips.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 10:23 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm wondering if there are resources that are equivalent to the resources here for front-end:

    https://beta.frontendmentor.io/

    https://frontendmasters.com/books/front-end-handbook/2019/

Those two resources provide guidance from basics to advanced in the front-end-handbook and the beta site has awesome challenges you can go build and compare solutions with others! They give you all the resources as if you get it from a designer and you build it! Pretty cool right?

I'm a full stack developer comfortable in the front-end, and want to work on the backend some more.

    Got any?

    Thanks & Happy Coding

eCommerce Question: What CMS should I use? High Product Count, Low Traffic

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 10:58 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I will try to make this as simple as possible.

    Site Details:

    - Hold 60,000 - 70,000 products total

    - Each product doesn't need an image (1 image per category of 26 - 125 products)

Eventually be able to handle a couple thousand visitors a day (probably around 50-100 transactions daily). <-- This is the ideal outcome in a couple of years - Realistically probably won't make it this high, but I want to make sure it can handle this.

    - Still on a budget (it's a small company so Magento isn't the ideal option here)

I posted this on r/ woocommerce since I started the site on this CMS and they think this is manageable if I use a proper VPS, tweak the database & optimize css/js but I thought it would be biased...

    I guess my question is

    1. Do you think woocommerce could scale to this size given it is optimized? I know woocommerce is not really built for a site like this but it makes more sense for the cost than Magento.
    2. What is the optimal CMS to build a site of this size when you are not an enterprise company? I am willing to make the switch if there is a CMS out there that would be a much better fit for this type of site. FYI: Magento would be far too expensive and frustrating to maintain... So I am not looking into it as an option. Someone mentioned Shopify in my previous thread, which I previously wrote off. I think it may actually be a realistic option at this point? I have read that it can easily manage 100,000 products.

What is everyones opinion on this? Would love to hear what everyone thinks!

How to scan QR Codes using webcam ?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 02:10 PM PDT

I'm a back end developer and right now I'm developing a CMS for managing orders it's a postal service, on each order I'm generating a QR code based on the order's id. The problem: Couriers need to scan the QR code using their phone webcam so they can deliver that order. How do I scan a QR code and decode it to send it to the server side ? Sorry if the question is not clear, I suck at being a full stack developer front end isn't my thing.

Looking for solution for hosting with user access restrictions

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 01:44 PM PDT

Basically I'm trying to create a website for a client where files can be uploaded/downloaded, but that flow is restricted depending on user category (IT, accounts, finances, etc.).

I'd also like to have some way to generate reports based on # of downloads.

Looking for something off the shelf if possible, but I can build something from scratch given the right solution.

Does anyone know if there's a ballpark figure for when the (non-beta) Chromium Edge will be release?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 01:31 PM PDT

I've been looking into a few issues in edge related to flexbox behavior and performance and found that all of them are resolved in the beta versions of the new chromium based Edge. Just curious if anyone has head mention of an estimated release date. Even if it's unofficial. Thanks!

    Drawing a lot of charts

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 09:42 AM PDT

Hi, i maintain a web app that needs to draw a very large amount of independent line charts. So far I'm using the JavaScript library chartjs but it is very slow because of the huge amount of canvases and scripts created and not really seems like a good idea.

Are there any other approaches I could take here?

How to go back to front end after doing backend first?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 01:09 PM PDT

I did a course on udemy for full stack that used MERN stack. I have familiarized myself with node quite a bit but I want to make apps without using frameworks. How does one learn to like front end because I have no artistic talent and hate everything I make on the server side. I like Owen king with algorithms and numbers but I am getting frustrated with JavaScript animations. Any advice?

Recommended resources for finding remote contracts for Rails devs?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 12:57 PM PDT

    Hey webdev!

I'm in the process of starting my own company, but until I'm (ever) able to make it profitable, I need to do something to have some income. I was curious if anyone had suggestions for the best places to find US-based part-time or contract work! I'm a pretty experienced developer (4+ years experience in java and ruby/rails) and I'm used to working remotely, so I feel like I'm in a good position, I'm just not really sure where to go. About the only place I've found is Upwork, but they take a pretty hefty chunk out of your hourly rate.

    Any suggestions?

Barcode scanning direct to web database?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 12:23 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I posted earlier about something and since then I've thought of a possible solution to it (it was about RFID scanning and a web app for running times). I was just wondering if it is possible to use a barcode scanner (possibly a usb one) to input data straight to a web based app. The user would scan a card to start a run, and scan the same card to stop the run, this time between would then be their run time and displayed on their profile.

I am just wondering if it's possible to make a system like this, as with RFID I needed a middle system to send the information from reader to the website, and I would rather send the information straight from the scanner to the website.

Thanks for any advice you can give!
