[REVIEW] Stay away from 1&1 ionos

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 06:52 AM PDT

I bought an .io domain for $85 for two years.

When I purchased the domain, it took for 48 hours to "register", well when 48 hit. I got an email stating my domain was not successfully registered.

I looked it up and now it's a premium domain, owned by "NameBright". It was registered the day after I registered it.They're selling it for $5k.

No big deal right, oh wait I can't get a refund.

Well I guess it's in their TOS, if they're unable to successfully register the domain, you'll still get charged.

Now I have to do a chargeback on my credit card.

I will be transferring my domains to a new host, and avoid ionos at all cost!

Attempting to learn PHP, where do I begin?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 04:46 AM PDT

I know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/jQuery and now I'm attempting to learn PHP. I started watching a course on Udemy that I hope to finish and it suggested that I download MAMP, so I did and I was at a loss trying to navigate around the vastness of it. I also bookmarked the PHP.net manual. What are some of the best resources for learning PHP, what are some PHP essentials one should know?

Starting first full time frontend dev job this week

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 10:55 PM PDT

Hey everyone. For the past 6 months or so, I've been working as a frontend web developer in a couple of different part time positions for startups on an hourly basis. When given the freedom to pick the technologies I work with, I like to use React even though I've only started working with React in the last 6 months or so as well. Last week I got an offer from another startup in my city that would be full-time and salaried, where I would be the only frontend dev, working with two full stack devs. The purpose for them hiring me is them wanting to completely redo the frontend of their SaaS platform in React or Vue.

I'm basically entry level at this point, and my resume shows only about 6 months of work history, along with my fairly small portfolio, and I'm not being paid much. I crammed for the interview which didn't end up having much technical questioning, and it makes me feel like I somehow cheated the interview process. This project is way larger in scope and responsibility than anything I've worked with in the past. This along with me working with two full stack developers with a ton of experience that were relocated to my city makes me very nervous about "performing" well or whatever.

Does anyone have any advice acquired from similar situations? I've got a month probationary period, and even that is stressing me out. There will be a huge amount for me to learn, even within React for this position, and impostor syndrome makes me feel like I will be replaced immediately upon my first mistake, even though I rationally know that probably isn't true.

    Thanks for any replies!

    Edit: spelling and stuff

    Grails?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 10:28 AM PDT

Anyone here actively using it? Anyone think it's a viable language in 2019? I've dabbled in some RoR and full stack JS stuff, but I am primarily a Java developer. So naturally Groovy and then Grails would, theoretically, have the smallest learning curve and most carryover. But everywhere I look Grails just doesn't seem to have that much support compared to the other popular frameworks. r/Grails is basically a ghost town, for example. Any happy, successful Grails devs out there?

SEO and How to Appear on Page 1 of Google Search?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 04:07 PM PDT

Hi, I've recently become interested in SEO and I've been using Google Console to track how my site is doing and, ostensibly, increase my ranking as far as indexing is concerned. My portfolio website - which I use primarily to document my recent art and design work - was initially on the first page of google search results when I searched by my full name (which is included in the site url as well as the site title) and, in an attempt to move my page further up, I removed my middle initial from the title and included my name in the meta tags. Now my website has moved all the way back to page 4. I can assume that this is temporary as Google has newly indexed my website, but I really have no idea what's going on behind the scenes here. I'm not quite sure how this happened or how to go about remedying such a thing, so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Project Manager at web dev agency

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 09:52 AM PDT

I'm a non-technical PM at a web development agency. I see I need to acquire more technical and leadership skills.

How would you describe the best Project Manager you've worked with? How did he/she manage to have the team perform at their best?

How often do you use algorithms and data structures in front end webdev?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:29 AM PDT

I've been applying to a bunch of front end positions and I keep getting code tests related mostly to solving some sort of puzzle problem involving algorithms. I'm self taught and I don't have the tradiontal CS education. I've built some projects, but now I feel like I wasted a bunch of time. Since it seems like I would have been better served spending the last few months doing leetcode or hacker rank. Now it feels like I'm starting from square one. For the web developers that have gone through the hiring process, do ever have to do any of these puzzle type problems you see on leetcode on the job?

Having a hard time with UI/UX

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 11:42 AM PDT

    Hello fellow programmers!

I'm currently a third year Computer Science student, with a big passion for programming.

HOWEVER! I really face trouble in the design phase of any project I start working on.

I want to become a remote/freelance developer, so I decided to start building my portfolio, got a couple of project ideas and started gathering some information, afterwards I started with the design phase, and I looked at Dribbble, Behance, Pinterest just to get some inspiration, and I did! I've found a couple of designs that I really liked! But whenever I start replicating the design my OCD kicks in! I design something in a specific way, it works somehow and breaks when on mobile I fix that and after I finish it I look at my work and feel that the solution is just a hack of some sort and is not perfect! So I abonden the whole project!

This started to really cripple me, I'm 23 I've been programming since I was 15 and I haven't even worked on a single project that I can be proud of.

When a project involves coding a backend system, or a console app I really shine and enjoy what I do! I feel like I have a purpose and push through whatever obstacle I might have and even get the perfect solution for a problem.

When I'm required to do design work whether mobile or web, I get depressed and really don't want to start working on the project.

I really need your help guys, I don't know how to overcome this!

Should I just focus on the backend? Can I get a remote / freelance jobs with backend knowledge only?

Lots of opening are available for Front-End devs / Designers and that's what pushes me into the field however I am not enjoying it and I don't know what to do!

    Thanks in advance :)

    Online ordering / delivery options?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 03:26 PM PDT

I have a client that has a WP site for her coffee kiosk. She takes orders for pickup and deliveries online. The best option I could find for an all around solution a year or so back was GloriaFood. It works well, has a nice WP plugin and a fairly easy interface to update menu options, has an app for tablet / smart phone, And it's free.

My client needs to use multiple devices for receiving and viewing orders, something that GloriaFood does not support.

Does anyone know of a good solution that integrates with WP, is easy to use (client is not tech savvy) and allows multiple devices to receive and view orders? It does not necessarily need to be free.

    Thanks!

[Freelance Question] Client is refusing to pay by ignoring me. What are my options?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 09:14 AM PDT

About a month ago, I was referred to a big university that wanted a website for an upcoming conference. We talked on the phone and discussed what they wanted, price and completion date. They needed this done in 3 weeks.

I fill out their paperwork, they sign my contract (which basically just agrees on the work being done and price). I start working on the project, a Squarespace site, and quickly get it up and running. I added the layout, styling and logos. I keep the client updated and they are super easy going. Complete the job in 2 weeks and they do a final review with their media director. They approve and the site is published.

WELL they have yet to pay me. I have emailed all points of contact numerous times but have gotten nothing back. I am kind of at a loss at what to do since its a Squarespace site and I was added as a contributor so I don't gave access to take the site down, lock it, etc. I've never had this happen so I was seeing if anyone had advice on what to do next? Thanks in advance

In today's episode of things that I thought would be straightforward but aren't... how should I handle image orientation when a user uploads from a phone?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:45 PM PDT

It turns out that mobile phones just set a flag for the orientation of a mobile phone's photo rather than rotate it at the file-level. My application involves image editing so I really need to know what the proper orientation of the image is so that I can process it properly. The user can't change the orientation after initial upload, although I can add a rotate-image UI during the initial upload phase.

The easiest system-level strategy, for me, is to simply choose the correct orientation at upload and rotate the image in the file so that everything afterwards doesn't need to care about orientation metadata flags.

I use AWS on the backend and can run a lambda function when the user uploads a photo, any advice on what that lambda function should do? Are there packages that reliably determine the orientation? Should I let the user determine the rotation at upload time?

Not certain who to ask but we have a web direction problem`

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT

Issue, we have an unused domain hosted at GoDaddy we want to use for our backup program.

This program we have now in our own storage at our own colo. We have it mapped to some public IPs and want internet traffic to use the domain name instead of the public IP name.

I honestly have no idea how to accomplish this, or if this is even the right place to post this. We are a small back up company and don't want one of our public IPs noticeably visible when using the program, I find it would be far more professional for clients to see depository1.productname.com instead of a bunch of numbers. I am slightly familiar with GoDaddy and redirecting, I previously had a setup where the public IP portal was accessible through the domain name instead of the numbers.

What are your favorite donation button setups for websites?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 02:01 PM PDT

I have been doing research into adding donation functionality to a community website project I am working on. I am looking for a system that will automatically cash out the donations and disperse them among the developers. Something that's transparent so everyone can see the status of the donations. However, simple enough to prevent having to assign one person to ensure everyone gets their cut at a regular cadence. I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel by creating one, I'll keep searching, but in case anyone knows of something, I'd love to get suggestions.
