Finding research topics and industry needs

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:39 AM PDT

How do you find research topics? A classic answer is reading the current literature and looking into their faults and future work sections.

However, I like to base my research on industry needs. How can one look into current industry needs?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Accredited (Affordable) Upper-Undergrad CS Courses Online?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 04:33 PM PDT

    Hello Fellow CS enthusiasts,

Any idea where to get some online accredited coursework for upper level undergrad CS classes, preferably for a reasonable price (~500-1000 USD/course, ideally closer to <=$500)?

I've taken the core CS classes at my local community college (intro programming in C++, data structures C++, discrete math, algorithms, and intro architecture & organization), but I'm looking to get some more formal CS background ahead of an online MSCS program (Georgia Tech OMSCS, to be specific). I have a previous BS degree in Engineering (non-CE/non-EE).

Main topics I'm looking to cover are along the lines of the following subjects/textbooks:

    • Computer Systems - "Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective" (Bryant & O'Hallaron)
    • Computer Networking - "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach" (Kurose & Ross)
    • Theory of Computation (Automata, etc.) - "Introduction to the Theory of Computation" (Sipser)

My fallback plan is to just independently study these textbooks, but from my experience in the CC courses, it really does help to have some structure and curated content, along with labs and assignments to do; I learned a lot more that way than just studying programming on my own before my CC stint over the past year. Otherwise, MOOCs would be another option; if you have any recommendations pertaining to these subjects, that would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!!!

Insight on Hard Gainers in IT

    Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:09 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

As a fellow Computer Science graduate with a career in the IT industry, I understand that it can be difficult to motivate yourself to be active after a full day of sitting in a chair and staring at a computer.

I've been skinny my whole life but I've always had the urge to become stronger and to not feel like I might be blown away by a powerful gust of wind one day.

Does anybody else have similar thoughts? I am trying to gain insight on this so that I can help hard gainers who are struggling.

For anybody who has thought about this, I just have two simple questions:

1.) As a hard gainer what are the two biggest issues you have?

2.) If you were exactly where you wanted to be today, regarding your fitness, what would that look like?

I understand this issue may be a bit personal so feel free to DM me if you wish.

Thanks so much for your time and input.

    I really appreciate it!
