    Is this burnout?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 06:45 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is a normal (but bad) thing.

Lately I've been experiencing a dread of work, I lied pretty severely about a family issue in order to get a 4 day weekend and I feel as if I haven't recovered at all mentally. I feel like my mental stamina has decreased so much recently.

I used to be able to code 14 hours in a row, now if I do an hour straight I feel dumb as a rock. I get straight up mentally exhausted after a couple hours of work.

The mental exhaustion I'm referring to feels physically like someone put a balloon in my head and keeps inflating it, but mentally it just feels like I have little to no attention span or critical thinking capabilities. My drive to do development has also decreased, but I still keep at it.

I'm wondering if I should just take a couple days off with absolutely zero coding time, get plenty of exercise and eat right and see if that helps...

Just wondering if this is burnout, and if not I'm probably having early symptoms of dementia and will slowly descending into a semi-lucid state of hell.

How do you stay motivated when you don’t really care for the projects you’re working on?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 11:39 AM PDT

Having a hard time staying motivated at work. Not sure if it's just depression/anxiety getting the better of me, but for the past little while, I really feel no passion for the projects I'm working on. I haven't been able to hand off a project in the past 2 years where I can say "I am proud of my work on this." And that's not because I'm not putting in any effort in, it's just meaningless projects (to me) and time constraints always get in the way of me doing quality work, or maybe I just work slower than I should be, and so would that mean that I'm not suitable to be working in my position? How does one cope with all of this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Has anyone actually ever created a different language file for UK and US english?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:24 AM PDT

I've noticed the other day that some websites still have a different language selection option for US and UK english. It always seemed weird to me. Has anyone made use of the difference in the past when localizing a site?

Freelance offer, how much should I charge | Is my calculation okay?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 07:02 AM PDT

Today a colleague offered me a freelance job. He wants a small webproject to test his idea.

I am a webdev and have 2 years experience and I'd like to make the job, but want to make sure my price is reasonable.

    Location: Germany.

    He will need this functionality:

    - Register

    - Reset password

    - Email verification

    - User roles logic (User A, User B, Admin)

User A can register and create a profile with certain information. User B can also register (seperate register form) and will have the functionality to browse through all User A's and contact them if he wants to.

    - Edit user data

    - A result page with filter options

    - Contact forms

    - I will also do the design (I am a dev, but he thinks I have a good eye for design and I often do the first design in the company, of which a lot is kept in the end)

    - Paypal integration

    - File uploads to amazon S3

    - SEO

I have done all of these things a few times already and would need 1-3 hours per task.

Paypal is new for me, but I have worked with stripe a lot, so I know the basics. I still estimate paypal integration at 10 hours because its new.

I will use Python, Heroku, PostgreSQL.

    I calculated 33 hours for the whole project at 50 € /h, which is 1650 € total.

When I am doing these things at work I never think about how much hours I needed for each task, I just do it.

I red somewhere the final calculation should be multiplied by 1.5 for questions and unexpected things:

So my final total would be: 2475 €

    What do you think?

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who replied. There are still some things which I forgot, so I will up the price a bit. I wont go too high, because its a proof of concept project. But I will also make clear that every revision will cost extra.

    Need help with responsive

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:17 AM PDT

First, I am a designer learning CSS, so be gentle :). I want to make a card filled with information (boxes 1-8). And I want to be responsive but in a "different" way. When screen (or browser window) gets smaller, the information is shown differently (in terms of layout). I am trying to do this with CSS Grid and Flexbox but just can not do it or I do not know how to do/structure this. I have created a grid so I can put an element on. Is there anyone skilled who could show me? I have created a picture, what I want as a result and a codepen so you can see my code or edit it.

Question about developing with power consumption in mind? (Green development)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 10:56 AM PDT

I'm seriously wondering if there are steps to reduce carbon footprint when making web applications?

Does "dark mode/theme" help? Should I do fewer server requests with more payload? Is GraphQL more energy efficient than REST?

It sounds really weird asking these but I'm genuinely curious.

Could someone help me figure out why my site won't load (shows a black screen) on iPhone?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:12 PM PDT

Now the code is a shambles so I'm not going to ask anyone to go combing through that. But if you have an iPhone and a remote debugging setup of some kind and could post a quick screenshot of the console error(s) when you try to load the site that would be AMAZING 👍🏼👍🏼 https://brutalkungfu.com

Do you (not) have a github account?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:18 PM PDT

Okay, weird title perhaps. But the thing is, I'm in the middle of a recruitment/hiring process, and I'm receiving interests from developers without github accounts.

Is that even possible? We (as webdevelopers) work with so many open source libraries. How can you not have an account?

I'm not saying we must all contribute to libraries. But a senior developer that has never created an issue for a discovered bug? Or even to ask a quick support question?

Are there senior nodejs/javascript developers here, without an github account? What's your story? Am I short sighted here?

Learned the basics, which apparently don’t get used?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:09 PM PDT

Last month I started learned basic CSS, JS,React, and HTML5 through 1-2 hours long crash courses on youTube and made mini projects for experience. Recently I was commissioned to create a beauty salon/spa reservation website and app for a startup by a friend and it's my first ever full project. I'm handling the front end and another friend is handling backend. When I started working on it today,I found myself at a loss, so I decided to go look at other websites using the inspector tool to get an idea of how real, non-tutorial projects are done. Here's what I found: 1. The basic html tags are rarely ever used, and there is a lot of vector graphics, why so?

    1. I don't think I can build this website on my own right now let alone the app using React JS, is that a correct assumption?

    2. A lot of the times I see confusing names for style sheets and classes... as opposed to a meaningful class name like "header-logo", you're much more likely to see "c0788gef" which probably came from someone mashing their face on the keyboard. Is there any reason for that?

    Messed up databases

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 06:23 AM PDT

I've always been using XAMPP for website projects but had to use Python for one specific program, so I downloaded and installed a connector (the whole installer) from dev.mysql.com.

After I finished, I unistalled it (with Revo uninstaller) and now can't access my databases (I use HeidiSQL).

The data that was on those DB is not a problem, just, how can I make it work again?

I have to remake the website on the same server while the previous version is live and then point the domain name to the new website I made. How should I proceed? It's on WordPress.

Also the data needs to be retained.

Help with website for a small business

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:46 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am looking for recommendations on how to begin starting a website for my small business.

I have posted this question to another similar sub, but I apologize if this not the right place to ask, and would appreciate being directed to the right place.

Anyway, so as this business is a very small startup, I will be paying for all expenses out of pocket, so obviously minimization of costs is key for me to start. Ideally I would hire a professional to design my webpage, but that will not be an option to begin with.

After doing a small amount of research, I believe there are four components to my website.

    - Website design

    - Website hosting

    - Domain name hosting

    - Email hosting

I know this sub is not a fan of those sites such as Wix or Squarespace. Although they may provide an easy place to start, I agree with the community on their limitation being that you cannot have control over your files to transfer to another service or upgrade further.

I am thinking that possibly using a wordpress theme, and then bringing it over to namecheap for the hosting, domain name and email is a potential option. While I am fairly 'tech-savvy' I have no coding experience or anything of that nature, so I am hoping that my option is fairly simple.

Is using a wordpress theme (i.e. Avada) an option? Will this let me have my own files? I saw that that them in particular has support for 6 months, and can only be used on one site. What does that mean? It doesn't seem like I would have full control in that case.

Any suggestions, comments or opinions would be welcomed.

    Thanks

    E-Commerce Site for Digital Art

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 10:52 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

First of all, thank you for replying all my newbie questions so far. Love this community for it and definitely will pass along the tradition when i'm good enough to help others.

I'm currently studying web developement pn different sources and my ultimate personal goal for starter is an e-commerce site that i can sell my own digital art. What excites me and what i'm interested in is not the money i'll earn from that site, but the idea of it being out there and me being able to create such a platform.

I know it's still too soon about it but just wanted to ask and have an idea about the challenges i'm gonna face.

So if it's not too much trouble, I would like to learn about the basic structures of a site that suits my description. Such as preventing users just to copy the content or transaction methods and protocols, the security both for the site and the users and so on...

Any external links about the topic or personal input is hugely appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

How to create a working contact form for a site that will be hosted on github?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:35 AM PDT

Basically I have a contact form on my website that doesn't wactually work. I want to be able to take someones name, email and their message and send that message to my email. This is for a portfolio page that I'll have hosted through github.

I've never done anything like this before though, and I don't really know where to start. Could someone give me some guidance? Will I need to use PHP for this? will that work on github?
