Frustrating knowledge gaps that keep me from improving

I'm an average joe programmer and I just feel like I don't know what I'm doing a lot of the time regarding certain things, like threads for example. I sort of know what a thread is and why it's useful, but I don't really know it. Like, I'll look at a static Java method and think "ok this is thread safe because it only uses local variables, and local variables are kept on the thread's stack... or are they? do I even know what a stack is?"

How do you deal with this?

Why aren't computer games created using vectors, so that each user can have as much definition as they want by upgrading their hardware?

    Hello

I was playing Factorio and was wandering why the programmers didn't use vectors to avoid graphics getting blurred very easily with just a bit of zooming in on an area of the map.

Given a list of objects, find all lists who contain only objects from the given list? Help figure out?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 10:28 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm working on a personal project and this is something I'm trying to figure out how to do efficiently. Let's say you have a list containing [ObjA, ObjB, ObjC], then find all lists who only contain ObjA, ObjB, and/or ObjC. So a list such as [ObjA, ObjA, ObjC] would be valid but [ObjB, ObjC, ObjD] wouldn't be because we do not have ObjD.

Note: These lists will not be sorted but could be sorted based on their name ie if we have [ObjA, ObjC, ObjA] then it could be sorted to [ObjA, ObjA, ObjA] but the sorting algorithm must be included in run time if chosen to do.

Help figuring out distance modifier for my friends game.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 08:25 PM PDT

My friend wants help figuring out a formula of some sort for the following thing :

Basically, if someone in his game shoots someone from a distance of 600 meters, and the bullet does 10 damage, it'll do 10 x 0.5 damage. However, if someone shoots someone from 0 meters, it'll do 10 x 1.5 damage. This makes sense because the further away someone is when getting shot, the less damage it does. If the person gets shot at a distance of 300 meters, it would be 10 x 1.0 damage. So the damage of the bullet is multiplied by a certain value depending on the distance. Each gun will have a cap for damage (so it could be 1.5 like the previous example, or another gun could have 2.75) and a cap for max distance before we hit the cap (so 600 meters like the previous examples or it could be 1750 or anything). We're trying to figure out a formula that can determine the damage done based on the distance, even if the values change. Read how my friend explains it because it goes into more detail :

"If i shoot you from point blank, it'll do way more damage than from 20 meters away. I want to use what i'm calling a distance modifier for the sake of convenience that caps out at 1.5 and has a minimum of .5 so assuming that base damage is, say, 10 the maximum damage from the minimum distance (0, for example) would be 10 x 1.5 and the minimum damage from the maximum distance (600, for example) would be 10 x .5 but how to determine what the distance modifier is, i do not know" - my friend

Does anyone know how this could be achieved? Thank you!

    HPC/CLOUD SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas is seeking a professional Linux systems administrator to manage large scale research computing systems.

    POSITION SUMMARY

The HPC (High Performance Computing)/ Cloud Computing System Administrator, Sr. provides cluster and systems administration for an HPC system and private cloud computing infrastructure used by researchers. Duties include performing maintenance of associated software environments including installation and configuration of open-source and commercial scientific applications; coordinating with the IT department to deploy and maintain hardware and storage solutions for research scientific computing; using system monitoring and reporting tools to ensure the maintainability, scalability and availability of infrastructure; providing training, support, installation and configuration assistance to researchers. In addition to overseeing the HPC, this position also provides systems administration for a private cloud computing and storage infrastructure used by researchers including installation of hypervisors (VMware), creation of OS images and VM creation and management.

Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to provide systems administration in a Linux environment and possess advanced knowledge and understanding of Linux (REHL, CentOS or equivalent) server configuration including services; system scripting; and knowledge of security and network protocols. The applicant must be capable of contributing within a team environment and have an eagerness to learn new technologies as well as being a self-starter, with ability to problem solve independently.

Work or education experience in an HPC environment, especially with cluster file systems, scheduling, workflow and resource management tools (Moab/Maui/Torque), and experience with Singularity/Docker container technology is highly desired. Knowledge of parallel computing techniques (multi-threading, MPI) and GPU computing with ability to help researchers optimize software for this type of computing environment is a plus.

A bachelor's degree and five years of work experience is required. Advanced degrees or other training may substitute for work experience.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

50% Cluster, Storage, and Cloud System Administration

Manage and administer production systems used by researchers on an HPC cluster environment, high speed storage and private objectstore. Manage and administer production systems used by researchers on the research component of the UAMS private cloud. Work closely with service IT departments to maintain system integrity, deploy and maintain hardware solutions including CPU and GPU-based clusters, high-speed networking and data storage.

    10% Software Installation and Maintenance

Install and configure open-source and commercial scientific applications. Work closely with administration and IT purchasing to source and implement appropriate software. Maintain software licenses and provide updates and fixes as necessary.

15% Analysis and resolution of technical issues

Provide issue support, installation support and solution support. Develop and maintain system documentation and user guides. Assign and spin up VMs for researchers.

    25% Customer service

Interact with and assist the public and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner. Demonstrate effective communication skills; communicate accurate and complete information; maintain strict confidentiality when necessary. Demonstrate positive working relationships with co-workers, management team, and ancillary departments. Assist internal and external stakeholders as needed with exceptional customer service. Such service will include taking new users from their initial log-in to fully running jobs on the HPC. Training users to use Singularity container techniques and how best to optimize their software applications for the UAMS HPC environment.

Can someone suggest a research topic?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2019 05:16 AM PDT

I don't know if this is the right sub-reddit to ask this…

I am a 12th grade student and one of our main requirement to pass this level is to conduct a research study in which our research topic must be related to the program we'll take in college. In my case, I'm interested in taking Computer Science. I've been thinking a concept to make an RFID payment system in our canteen since the main cause of traffic and chaos is when paying and waiting for change. I don't have any background in coding and don't know where to start. I have proposed this project but was rejected as it was marked as "too complicated".

If anyone would like to suggest a topic for a case study/research study that is related in Computer Science, I'd appreciate it so much.
