ELI5; difference between CMS and Headless CMS? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:01 AM PDT Hello friends! So please excuse my ignorance as i have zero experience in webdev, but I am thinking about starting a small online magazine, and I got into the rabbit hole of hosting platforms and the appropriate/economically convenient CMS for such endeavor. Can all of this be done without webdev experience? Or must I hire a developer? Your help will be very much appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Aug 2019 10:22 AM PDT Hi y'all! I'm self-teaching and early in the learning process, but I just wanted to post a note of thanks to this sub and the content you guys & gals & theys provide. I'm lucky to have a freelancing gig that allows me to practice and grow my skills, and having this sub (& web design) along side has made my work one of daily discovery, which is a joy. So thank you! I don't have anything to show off yet, but I'm looking forward to the day. [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:07 PM PDT I made a post a day or two ago asking how to properly structure a project so when I hire it's clear and understandable as to what will need to be done. I wanted to do this with a mock project to see what you guys think. The TL;DR
Mock Project Scope Of WorkThis mock project will be based off of this bootstrap social network theme. Stacks
PHP & Javascript Packages
Pages
Functionality FeaturesUser
Messenger System

Search
Database InformationHere I would include a database schema from: https://dbdiagram.io and I would also include all of the modes/tables and their relationships for example a user has many posts. Notes On FunctionalityGenerally any notes that have to do with features. Github BranchesMaster -> Dev -> Feature -> Sub Feature So how does all of this look so far? I think for my actual project I will want the firm to mostly tackle UX/UI stuff and what I would do is abstract my front end into a vue project and give them the "theme" I've already created and ask for their help with that. Then any functionality issues I have I would get their help with that as well. Thanks a lot for all of the help so far guys. [link] [comments]
Where do you go to hire / be hired for free lance web dev projects? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:26 PM PDT I've been using UpWork, but have had mixed results. And I hear they recently changed the format for freelancers that makes it worse for them (taking a bigger cut?). I know there are recruiting sites like ZipRecruiter and stuff, but I'm looking for some places that is project based not permanent hire. I'm not promoting a particular site or myself, so hoping this is approved by mods. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:57 PM PDT Hello guys, I'm a pretty inexperienced web developer. I was tasked with figuring out how to use git on our wordpress sites. I am struggling to figure out exactly how to set this up. Our server allows git repository, so i can install it there but im not sure what my path should be? Or how to connect from a dev's local computer to push to that repository. I've done a ton of googling and looked through some of the guides on Reddit, but they still go over my head. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]

Are there any programming languages that you should avoid learning without a degree? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 04:09 PM PDT I wanted to learn C# for game dev, but I also was hoping to get a job in .Net. I was also learning Java , but I heard you can only get Java jobs with a CS degree. Before I commit a massive amount of time learning a language, I want to know which languages are not worth learning if you want a job without a degree ? Thanks [link] [comments]
GoDaddy Free Email Forwarding Being Phased Out? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:55 AM PDT Does anyone know the validity of this question? GoDaddy fed my client this line trying to get them to buy their email service to which I advised against since you can just use free email forwarding and send things from gmail. But now there are rumblings of them getting rid of it? Does anyone know of any other free alternatives to this? [link] [comments]
Advise needed: How do you build a GitHub worthy for job applications? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:34 AM PDT I am inquiring what people would suggest is the best way to build up a portfolio that is worthy of using for job applications. What has worked for you in the past? What would you do differently knowing what you know now. Also, I am a new parent so it is even more difficult for me to find the time to code and learn frameworks like React or Vue. Are there any new parents in the community that has gone through the job application process and if so what did you do? I appreciate any and all advise! TY [link] [comments]
I'm looking for a client-friendly CMS that generates a static site Posted: 09 Aug 2019 03:02 PM PDT Lately I've been making fast and light marketing sites. I build them locally and push the html etc. to the server. I'd like to build on the same concept and give clients a way to add / update text.
I've been researching this quite a bit, and a lot of options come close. But so far I haven't found the silver bullet. [link] [comments]
What's something you feel that you learned 'too late' related to web development? Posted: 08 Aug 2019 07:14 PM PDT I learned about a month ago that in VSCode you can hold ALT+UP/DOWN arrows to move lines of code up and down the editor and that SHIFT+TAB lets you tab backwards. I also learned a week or so ago that you can use `$$` in chrome console to run a `QuerySelectorAll` function. Both very useful time saves. I have these moments allllllllll the time, anyone else? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 05:57 AM PDT To anyone experienced this is probably gonna sound stupid, so a little background on my personal experience: I started last year learning front-end web-dev by my own for a personal project and liked it so stuck around it on and off, lately I've been spending more time learning, reading, subscribed to this and a couple other dev subreddits and did 2 more projects, one commercially and other one is my own personal portfolio site. For all three of those projects I used HTML + CSS and Bootstrap as a framework with ocasional JS scripts for specific things I could not make with vanilla CSS or that weren't on Bootstrap (so far so good). Also, for those 3 projects I used Atom and Github Desktop to upload to Github Pages as a host (since I haven't had a need for other kind of hosting and I didn't have a buck to spare so used every free service I could find, freeDNS, github pages and that's that) So, recently I've been reading lots of threads and everyday I find new services or alternatives, I've been watching Traversy Media videos and there's always something new and I'm not against innovation or anything, it's just that since I don't have a steady footing on my knowledge about these things every time I see some new service I'm like "and what's THAT for?" So, CI/CD, Docker, GitLab, Netlify, CDNs, and other services and abreviations are kinda confusing still. I can understand that Gitlab is a competitor to Github and stuff but still, on every service description I read there's 3 new things mentioned and it's honestly a rabbit hole I can't quite follow. before anyone asks I have seen the Guide to Web Dev in 2019 from brad complete like 2 times and even took notes, It's still confusing past the first third of the video. So, can anyone dumb it down or link me to any comprehensive guide where these things are explained on what they are and when I'd need them? I know the "when you have the need for them you'll find out about them" rule, but I kinda wanna learn on my own a little to see where to aim my educations towards. Thanks in advance, sorry for the long post and I din't find an exact answer to this, but if it was already asked (and still relevant) sorry for reposting. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to have two frontend connected to one backend? Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:38 PM PDT I want to connect two front ends (one for clients and one for office) connected to one main backend. Such that when I press some buttons on the office side, it affects the website on the client side as well (i.e change some styles). Similarly, when a client clicks some buttons on the website, lets say he buys some stuff off of my website. All his order is displayed on the office side. How will achieve this? For the client side I am using html, css and vanilla js. For backend I am using node.js For office side I am building for android and I am open to suggestions. Please guide me to what my model should look like? [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT In 2019 do we still need to use vendor prefixes for modern browser compatibility? I checked this website out but looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. If so, what specific properties do we need to watch out for? [link] [comments] |
