    A web-scraping guide for beginners

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:06 AM PDT

    Having worked in the web scraping industry for a few years I know how easily troublesome it can be to write, maintain and even begin web scraping.

    I am currently writing a series of beginners guide about the topic that will hopefully cover every aspect of web scraping.

    Part 1 is about many tool and concepts you need to know and understand in order to begin to scrape without getting blocked.

    Part 2, coming out by the end of the week, will be a bottom to top approach about scraping in python with more code.

    Please let me know if you'd like some topic to be covered and if this topic interests you.

    I thought Freecodecamp's 'Survey Form' project was a little too vanilla, so I decided to make a 'Scurvy Form' instead....

    https://codepen.io/rhelli/pen/YzKwJpy

    I thought the basic project requirements and the example provided were a little bland so I decided to make something a little...different. 'Scurvy' doesn't even rhyme with 'survey', so I really don't know what I was thinking about when I came up with the concept!

    Any feedback on my code (Github for easier viewing) would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Programming

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 08:57 PM PDT

    How would someone go about programming a computer to do something physical? Example would be (I know this is cheesy) but like ironman's suit. Like when he gets back home and makes his mark 2 I believe when it does the close up of his boots closing. How would someone program something like that?

    Learning Method: Bare bone/simple vs opionated/fully featured?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2019 12:02 AM PDT

    When learning to program in different areas, I've come across two main ways of learning to do something. The first way is to go with something simple and bare bone; supposedly, this way helps you learn the "inner-workings" and let's you understand what's really going on under the hood. The second way is to go with something that has a lot more done for you already and possible enforces some sort of structure and best practices, but can abstract a lot of stuff away.

    For instance, many Uni students might start with C first to learn core principles of CS while many others start with something like python which enforces tabs, has a lot of built-in libraries, etc. (I know this is a gross oversimplification but hear me out.)

    In other areas, I see the same sort of dichotomies. For frontend webdev, React framework is something simple to use and get started with, but Angular for something that has built in functionality and opionated way of solving problems. For backend, there's Flask or Express/Node vs Django. For deep learning/ML, there is Keras vs just tensorflow. For game development, there's SFML/pygame/... vs Unity. I know that not all of these perfectly fit my description, but I personally think there's a pattern.

    As a learner myself, I'm just curious on what others think is the best way to learn these sorts of things as a general guide. Is it better to start with a fully featured framework/language/etc. or does it hinder learning? Or does it not matter at all as long as you pick one way to learn? Is it too case by case to generalize? What do you all think?

    C++, runtime error vanishes when I use printf

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 11:30 PM PDT

    I have been programming in C/C++ for almost 3 years now. I have experienced this issue a few times now. Suppose, I have an error in my code (maybe array out of bound access/divide by zero), which is causing the program to crash when I run it. But when I put some print statements in random places for debugging purpose and I run the code again, it doesn't crash any more. If I remove the prints, again crash.

    Any explanation why this happens?

    How do I display/store/edit/modify a response from server?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 11:25 PM PDT

    Does anyone know how to store a response from the server as a text file or XML file which I can later modify? I'm using Visual Basic.Net.

    The response from the server is in XML format which I can view using Messagebox.show(ResponseFromServer) but I cannot modify or save it. How do I store it or even view it as an XML file?

    Just got my first job as Junior Java Developer, i need a quick help!

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 12:50 PM PDT

    Hey!

    Im 21, halfway through a CS Degree and surprisingly crushed a code interview for an IT Consulting company. Got hired and i'll have my first day there in 2 weeks. I asked for a list of technologies/programs they use for development in a daily basis and they answered me with this:

    • "Spring Boot, Spring Security, MicroServices, ActiveMQ, Gradle; also good to look up on some unit testing: JUnit,Mockito,Spring Tests"

    So, i literally have never worked with any of that, what do you guys think i should prioritize learning from that list so i can get a good headstart once i get there to work?

    Transitioning to another language profession

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 10:17 PM PDT

    Hello /r/learnprogramming

    I am a software developer of five years experience working for a company that uses a combination of a proprietary language named OpenEdge ABL for backend and angular js + jQuery for the front end of our web applications.

    I am looking to make the jump to another programming language to focus on career wise but am not too sure where to start or if anyone here has ever gone through the same experience.

    Off the cuff I have some experience with C++ and python in terms of being able to solve simple problems on leetcode but not too sure if I were to delve into these languages what career opportunities I would have available? Any advice is welcome.

    Java course done. What’s next?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 06:14 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone! I am almost done with a 12 week java course from the University of Helsinki( Object-Oriented programming with Java, part 2) . This is my first experience with programming. I am not sure where to go from here. I feel like I need to do more projects from scratch or do some other more advanced courses. My ultimate goal is to get a Junior position in programming. I currently work in IT as a system operator monitoring the health of our network and applications. Unfortunately we don't have any departments which work with Java. Thank you for your responses!

    I noticed Java.lang.String caches it's hash values. Should I be doing that whenever I have a immutable class that overrides hashCode?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 03:57 PM PDT

    Also for mutable classes should I have a cache field and whenever the object is mutated, reset a flag indicating that the hash needs to be recalculated?

    I keep hitting a wall with basic Ruby.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 09:45 PM PDT

    So I took a test for a coding bootcamp and I managed to get all the questions right but one and I've tried fixing it on my own in case the retake has a similar question. Prompt: Have the code produce words that have six or more letters and end in "e". My code is:
    def long_words(str)
    phrase = []
    *i = 0
    *letters = str.split
    *while i < words.length
    *
    if str[i] >= 6 && letters[-1] == 'e'
    **phrase << i
    *
    End.
    **i += 1.
    *End.
    *Return phrase.
    End.
    I'm on mobile so sorry if I messed up a tab and ignore the . at the end of End. I also don't know how to tab on mobile so hence the *

    Why adding more lines to a loop doesn't increase execution time by the number of lines?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 09:27 PM PDT

    I am working through time complexities and here is some basic function:

    public void basicMultiply(double n) { long start = System.currentTimeMillis(); int redundant; for(int i = 0; i < n; i++) { redundant = 2*2; } long end = System.currentTimeMillis(); System.out.println("Elapsed time is " + (end - start) + " ms"); }

    I pass the function 1.0e9 and it executes for 1450 ms. Ok. Next step was that I doubled the computations. Instead of every loop making a useless computation once, it was twice:

    public void basicMultiply(double n) { long start = System.currentTimeMillis(); int redundant; for(int i = 0; i < n; i++) { redundant = 2*2; redundant = 2*3; } long end = System.currentTimeMillis(); System.out.println("Elapsed time is " + (end - start) + " ms"); }

    Running time barely changed! 1470 ms. If this loop runs n times, and I added one more line to each loop, shouldn't execution time increase by a factor of 2? Its n*2 things to do instead of just n.

    Programmer looking to mentor beginner

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:23 AM PDT

    Hello World! I've been an employed programmer at a game studio for a year now, and a hobbyist for several before then. I am looking to take 1-3 new people to learn c# / unity as a way to refine my tutoring and teaching to help me before I start to volunteer at a local school to ensure that I'm up to par with teaching a variety of learning styles.

    I have a bachelors in software engineering / game development, and work with a variety of disciplines in my day to day job and can help you go from no understanding of how games work, to a completed project to show off and even grow.

    We'll be going through the basics of c#, learning things like basic user interfaces and data i/o, and quickly moving into unity to learn how to use sprites and animations in combination with simple code.

    I need to emphasize, this is a trial run that I want to use to further develop a curriculum and as such, it won't be perfect and we'll run into issues. I hope you consider me if you're wanting to learn!

    EDIT: The response has been bigger than I thought, Im going to open it up to a larger number of people instead of a direct mentor. I'll close signups when the first stream begins (which will be 08/16, or the following friday after this post)

    Is it possible to fully automate bill data entry?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:50 PM PDT

    The company I work for receives mail in bills, scans them into PDFs, then has employees key the bills (I'm working data entry so this is what I'm doing).

    I assume the company I work for has spent thousands of hours/dollars to work to try to automate the process. In fact, out of the ~2million accounts, only ~600,000 get keyed by humans.

    I was wondering if it is even possible to fully automate the process with a mailed-in bill turned pdf. I assume the best language would be Python for this if it was. It's been a goal of mine to want to eventually try to automate what I do, but before I even try to begin I'm wondering other, more experienced opinions than mine on if it's even possible.

    Confusion with the word “lexical”

    For example, what does it mean for a inner function to be written lexically to the outer function?

    How do I convert these integers to doubles with only two decimal places? (Java)

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 07:08 PM PDT

    I just started learning Java and I'm trying to create a small project where this code can calculate your finances. It is working so far but I want to be able to use a number with only two decimal places with this code.

    import java.util.Scanner; public class FinanceCalculator { public static void main (String[] args) { System.out.println("Enter your total amount: "); Scanner total = new Scanner(System.in); String[] items = {"food", "housing", "clothing", "your automobile","appliances","services",}; int totalAmount = total.nextInt(); int sum = 0; for (int i = 0; i < items.length; i++) { /*System.out.println("How much did you spend on food?");*/ /*myQuestion("food?");*/ System.out.println("How much did you spend on " + items[i] + "? "); Scanner itemInputCost = new Scanner(System.in); int itemCost = itemInputCost.nextInt(); sum = sum + itemCost; } for(int x=0;x< items.length; x++){ System.out.println(""); } int balance = totalAmount - sum; System.out.println("Your balance is: $" + balance); if (balance < 100){ System.out.println("You're broke! Manage your finances better!"); }else { System.out.println("Great job keeping your finances in check!"); } } }

    When I try to change every int to double or float I get this error message:

    FinanceCalculator.java:13: error: incompatible types: possible lossy conversion from float to int System.out.println("How much did you spend on " + items[i] + "? "); ^ 1 error error: compilation failed

    Firestore Admin SDK - Memory usage keeps increasing.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2019 06:55 PM PDT

    Can someone please explain why the following increases the memory which then doesn't get garbage collected?

    I am running the collection.add() function in a loop rated limited to 450/s as I'm iterating through a CSV file. The memory does not increase if I remove the collection.add() method so I assume it's Firebase consuming the memory.

    How can I make sure that memory is released after it has been saved in the database?

    My code below, any help appreciated.

    db.collection("games") .doc(req.body.docid) .collection("players") .doc(row[5]) .set({ Number: row[0], FirstName: row[1], Lastname: row[2], Email: row[3], Prize: row[4], gameID: req.body.docid, guid: row[5] }) .then(() => { progressCount++; updateProgress(req.body.docid); }) .catch(err => { console.log(err.message); }); });
