An approach to a non-paying client that worked. Posted: 13 Jul 2019 10:58 AM PDT So I didn't want to post about this until it was resolved, and since as of today it finally has been, to my satisfaction, here's a short story. I've been working as an independent contractor for a startup in my local area since February this year. I prepare my invoices by the 10th day of each month and they cover all work done over the course of the previous month with NET15 terms from the date of issuance, so payment is due on the 25th of each month for work done in the prior month (in retrospect, this is way too generous of terms IMO based on this experience). After the first two invoices were issued, the client immediately paid them, in person (March, and April). When the May invoice was issued for work completed in April, I handed the client the invoice (with NET15 terms), and for the first time, I had to send a reminder on the due date and ended up receiving a check in the mail 2 days after the due date postmarked on the 25th, so I considered it an on-time payment. Next up, an invoice for May (issued in June) was sent out, on my normal schedule, on the 10th day of the month. I again send the reminder on the due date and say to disregard the notice if the payment had already been sent. Then I'm completely ghosted by my client. I send emails, make calls, no responses are sent back, no updates, nothing to say "Yo, the check is in the mail.". So I'm at a loss. How do I get their attention without potentially getting into some legal fiasco. Sure, they owe me money, and I can take them to small claims court over it, but I'd rather avoid that if I can. So, I come up with the idea to rollback the website in git to the last check-in that was paid for by them and redeploy it to both their development server and live www server. Good thing I keep meticulous records (shoutout to Harvest). FINALLY, I get their attention. Some of the unpaid work included updates to the copy on the website and better quality graphics, and the old material they had started with was very much first draft quality and didn't portray them as a serious business. I started getting text messages where they acknowledged they owed me and they wanted to set up a face-to-face meeting because they were experiencing email issues where they weren't receiving attachments. They paid the past due invoice, and the invoice issued on 7/10, so they're finally up to date, and I redeployed the latest content to their site right then and there. I really should switch to prepaid billing or issue invoices on the 1st of the month and tighten-up the terms. Anywho, this is a lesson learned, perhaps others can learn from my experience. Also, other tips on how you guys and gals have handled non-paying customers are welcome too. I'm not sure if this was the best way to handle it, it just happened to work for me this time. Does anyone have examples of sites that are visually pleasing? Posted: 13 Jul 2019 01:31 PM PDT I'm taking some time right now to actually learn CSS and how to style my projects so they don't look like websites from the 90s. The thing I hate about online courses and tutorials is that I don't feel like they go in depth, especially with CSS. I'm left feeling like there's a lot I'm missing. But because I don't know what I don't know, I don't even know just how much I'm missing (I know that sounds confusing...). Right now, I love looking at sites that are well designed (especially if the code is up on GitHub) because I can see how someone more experienced designs a page. I stumbled across stateofcss.com and I was baffled by their opening animation. I didn't even know absurd.design is nice too. I just love how simple the site looks. Just from scrolling through this site, I looked up some examples and saw it wasn't too hard to replicate the scroll animation. Does anyone else have some site I can inspect? I'm tired of avoiding CSS just because I don't know it. [link] [comments]

A minimal, easy-to-use and highly adjustable ReactJS dropdown. Posted: 13 Jul 2019 11:04 AM PDT Hi all, Have you struggled with styling <select> and <option> elements? Maybe turned to a UI component library but later faced their extensive style? I have, many times. And usually, I turn to Semantic UI React for their functionality but find overwriting its style a hassle. I'm on vacation and thought I should make a reusable dropdown once and for all. It suits my basic needs and is easy to use so I'm quite happy with the outcome. I will keep adding missing features such as search functionality. Feel free to check it out. I published it as a npm package, you can find it here: https://github.com/KiTiVi/react-kiwi-dropdown If you have any questions, issues, suggestions or general feedback please let me know! :) [link] [comments]

Headless CMS with native markdown support? Posted: 13 Jul 2019 01:35 PM PDT I've tried various headless content management systems (Contentful, Sanity and Prismatic) and I really love the idea, but none of them have markdown support, they provide a WYSIWYG editor and save to a proprietary format. I searched a ton but can't find anything. Ideally, I would like an editor like Dillinger. Does this exist? [link] [comments]
[Showoff Saturday] My alternative state management library Posted: 13 Jul 2019 06:38 AM PDT I know state management is perhaps a bit of a overdone topic but I still hadn't found one that seemed simple enough yet not too cumbersome at larger scales. I also wanted it to be Typescript based and basic debugging support in the form of history of changes. I don't have a snazzy name nor am I looking for one really but it's called SimpleDataStore. My simplest explanation is that there is a store that contains the current state and then when you want to change it, you execute a modifying function that returns a new partial state and that's it. No need to register a reducer or reducers, no actions, no action types or action creators. I don't want to go into more detail here however there's some more detailed examples here I have used this in a semi large project (it would have roughly 50 reducers in a redux setup) that is unfortunately an internal project for a company so I can't show it off, but I haven't encountered any issues with this setup. So this is a both a showoff but I'm also curious to know if I'm missing anything with such a setup compared to redux. I know that I would have to create my own browser addons if I did want that kind of debugging support compared to using a well known library. I'm wondering what I'm sacrificing for my simplicity that I might be missing. Thanks :) [link] [comments]
Any beginners want to start a project? Posted: 13 Jul 2019 08:36 AM PDT So I've been self studying web dev for a month and a half now pretty much none stop; following tutorials, udemy courses, etc. I now have an extreme urge to want to create something completely from the ground up but I also think it would be fun to get some other people in on a project so us beginners can start getting some experience working with other people and (possibly?) create something useful. Let me know if you're interested and we can get a Discord server going or something to start spitballing ideas. Anyone who is interested, add me on discord AntKnee#1592 [link] [comments]

Why does this JavaScript only work for images? Posted: 13 Jul 2019 11:52 AM PDT Hey Guys, I am currently rewriting a Javascript code and IDK why, but somehow it only applies the code to <img> tags. The idea is, that when you scroll to the half of a certain element, a class with a style will be added. However it only adds the class to img elements, not to divs. Any ideas why? Here is the code: https://codepen.io/lukaszadam/pen/bPypPe It is no adding it to the <figure> tag. [link] [comments]

React feels atrocious. How did it get to be so popular? Posted: 13 Jul 2019 10:30 AM PDT Just started out with it. JSX feels weird. A lot of the things feel absurd. Any idea why React is so popular? Do you use it on a regular basis? If so, why do you prefer it over the others? [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jul 2019 12:56 PM PDT Hi I'm a little new to some of this. My current issue is that I'm trying to test my PHP version by using: <?php phpinfo(); ?> And my screen is blank I have followed this guide and I'm on the final step https://www.sitepoint.com/how-to-install-php-on-windows/ I have tried using: ini_set('display_errors', '1'); to display the errors i'm having and still nothing is showing up. Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments]

What does "rockstar", "wizard", "guru", etc... mean? Posted: 12 Jul 2019 05:54 PM PDT Why do some freelance posts phrase stuff this way? "We are looking for a rockstar WordPress developer..." or "We want a React guru..." and so on. Obviously I know this is something people are getting from those stupid HR psychology articles that haunt LinkedIn and other such places, but what is the intended manipulation here? Anyone know?
