I got told I’m not good enough and demoted. learn programming

I got told I’m not good enough and demoted.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:14 AM PDT

Just happened. I feel crushed and kind of numb at the same time. I'd been working so hard for so long to keep getting better. And I was getting better everyday.

My boss called me into his office and basically said I'm not good enough to be a developer, even a Jr. developer, and that I'll be transferred to QA.

I feel like giving up all together. I feel like I want to die. Feels like everything I've worked so hard for and stressed over so much over was all for nothing.

I make less than 40k already and I'm already struggling financially, I don't know what to do other than give up. Feels like there's no point anymore.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who responded, I am down and very demotivated, but I'm going to keep practicing in my free time like I have been. If you have any extra advice or anything else helpful I'd really appreciate it.

Edit 2: First off I want to say thank you to everyone for your words of encouragement and your advice. It's really awesome that you all care so much about this community.

Today has been a real rollercoaster. So this morning I felt broke down and really wanted to give up, but then about 40 minutes ago I got a phone call from that company I had mentioned in the comments that I had been interviewing with and they made me an offer for double what I'm currently making.

Words cannot describe how much better I felt. When he told me they wanted to make me an offer I almost started crying. I thought they had called to say I had been rejected.

So thank you all again. I'm still not feeling 100% from what happened earlier today, but I do feel a lot better and I am a lot more hopeful.

Edit 3: Please don't attack my boss, ultimately I don't think this is what he wanted to happen, he was very nice and supportive since I've been there and I think if it was up to him he'd pay everyone lots of money and just help them continue to grow as developers. I think it's just how "business" is, if that makes sense. It really sucks but if one of his workers isn't doing as good as they expect his boss is going to be on his ass for that. He could have just went ahead and fired me but instead said I could just be transferred to QA. It still doesn't feel good but I don't blame him for the decision. I wish the circumstances were better but mostly I was disappointed in and upset with myself when I made this post.

Final Edit: Thanks again for all the kind words and advice everyone.

I really appreciate it. I'm feeling a lot better than when I made this post this morning.

I was feeling a lot of things at once and was having a hard time thinking clearly, but after I got that phone call I started to feel a lot more like myself.

I'm sorry I can't respond to everyone but there's just too many comments now, but I have read them all and will keep reading them as they come. I am very grateful you took the time out to comment.

Just finished my free YouTube course on Algorithms

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:16 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I just finished my JavaScript Algorithms Course, and I'm giving it away for free.

This sub has given me a lot of value over the years, and here's my way of giving back/saying thanks!

I'm a big believer in paying in forward, so I hope this helps anyone who already knows a bit about programming but is struggling to wrap their head around some of the more difficult concepts.

Can I learn two languages at the same time?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 05:26 PM PDT

I already have like... 4 months of experience in c++ but today I bought this book "Automate the boring stuff with python"

and I found python very interesting and it looks like you don't have to learn much to get amazing results, As a student I do a lot of boring stuff like renaming files and a lot of paperwork so I thought this book would Help me out a lot

But my question is.. can I learn two languages at the same time? I'm currently learning c++ I looked for this topic online and people said that you probably can but you'll find it very confusing.., but honestly I don't find it that confusing ,In fact I find both of them very similar it's as if python is just c++ without the annoying stuff and it looks like you can do some amazing things with python in a very short time and I've been having some trouble regarding that because I keep learning c++ but It seems like you have to learn A LOT in order to make useful programs.

Another JavaScript/Frontend Book Bundle - React, Preact, Kong, Electron and More

I couldn't find any good reviews on these but thought I would put this out there. Luckily, it looks like most of the books have about 3-4 authors so hopefully there is some good quality here. A quick perusal on Amazon shows that kindle versions of many of these books run about $20/piece.

    SCUMM similar language?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:28 PM PDT

I've always looked up to the games made by Humongous Entertainment and LucasArts, who both have used the SCUMM language.

So I was wondering, what language is similar to SCUMM? I don't know much about it honestly, but learning the language these studios have used kind of motivate me somehow.

    Thanks in advance!

What exactly should I include in my website / portfolio and what is the best way to build one?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:22 PM PDT

Hi there, I am a New Grad SWE interested in making a portfolio website. My end goal is to apply for trendy Tech Companies in the SF Bay Area, NOT in Freelancing or Web Agency work.

I am wondering what kind of projects I should include in my portfolio? I heard To-Do Lists, Calculator apps, and simple projects should be left out. If that's the case, what should I be focusing on?

For the portfolio website itself, what is the best way to make it?

I see the following options: * Use GitHub Pages + Jekyll (seems be the most popular choice for Techies / CS grads) * Use Wordpress theme and just modify it (seems to be the most popular choice for general beginners and aspiring freelancers) * Use non-Wordpress HTML/CSS theme and modify it * Create website from scratch using HTML/CSS/Bootstrap * Use Netlify + GatsbyJS (seems to be a newer option) * Use SSR tech like Next.js for React (seems to be a newer option)

Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

How to change html code with a form

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:18 PM PDT

I'm making a very basic website, and I was wondering if it was possible to add information to a form on the website and have new code be created to reflect that information. I have to repeat the same divs many times, but with slightly different text in each one. Is it possible to be able to fill out a form that will paste new code in the desired spot of code and fill it with the text I put in that form? I've delved into PHP and form outputs a bit, as well as using the clone element in HTML, but the bottom line is that I don't know how to have my HTML document automatically update by pasting new code in the correct spot.

IT systems engineer (15 years), keen to learn a development language, maybe for future career change. What language and what am I in for?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 12:23 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've developed an interest in development and wanting to learn a language in my own time to perhaps have a change in career in a few years.

I'd like to learn a language that will allow me to write applications and games, supported by most common PC and mobile platforms. What language do you recommend?

Also, what is it like to have a career in development? What should I know before I decide to embark on this huge undertaking?

About me... I've been in IT for about 18 years and currently a systems engineer. Not to brag, but I think I have the brains for it and I can be a pretty creative person too. But I don't know how intelligent I really have to be and whatever else I'd need to be.

    Thanks!

What is good architecture in an app that contains messaging features?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:12 PM PDT

I am building a web-app where people can share source code and talk to each other. Right now im trying to nail down the communication part so I am learning about messaging technology like STOMP and RabbitMQ.

I am going through RabbitMQ tutorial (for a java client) and I have a couple of questions:

    1. I know "hello world" guides just want you to get something working, even if its not working optimally. But why do I need to write 2 classes that each has a main method? Is this how you handle messaging? How that ties together in a program?
    2. Why am I prompted to compile 2 files? Here is the command:
      javac -cp amqp-client-5.7.1.jar Send.java Recv.java
      Is this how messaging works?
    3. I have difficulty understand the "Putting it all together" section. Why I need to run the program through the CLI?

Books/ Resources that help with problem solving but don't require computer access?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:48 AM PDT

I feel like I struggle with aspects of problem solving, and pretty soon I will be backpacking for a month. I figured it will be a good time to work on something like problem solving skills/ logic, since I won't be able to code. For reference I'm a computer science student comfortable programming and with a math background up through calculus and discrete math. Thanks!

Why do we use Floating Point Number standards, which have levels of inaccuracy, and their own issues, instead of simply storing two integers to represent the whole, and the fractional?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:42 PM PDT

I feel like it's a simpler system, that's less prone to errors. When we work with Floating Point standards, there can be multiple issues that appear with rounding, and edge cases, which is extremely annoying. Why not just use two integers to represent each side of the number? It's exact, and the memory usage isn't exactly an issue in these days. I'd understand if floating point systems would conserve memory, and you're working on embedded hardware, or with restrained resources, but nowadays I don't see it being a necessary restriction on modern hardware.

Feedback for idea (in Python): Creating generic interface for pluggable message/task brokers/queues and changing core architecture of and for current implementation

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:38 PM PDT

I am developing on a software project that at this moment is based on a REST API changing documents on a DB, that DB pushing those changes to 'Producers' who parses them, pushes those as workitems to a Redis Task/Message Queue (the horror), 'Workers' picking those up and sending them to 'Handlers' who execute them, and afterwards the Workers pushing the results back on the queue.

My idea would be to change this principle in two ways:

    (1) First, I'd like to simplify and have the REST API directly put things on the queue, Workers picking them up and both be responsible for updating the DB and sending it on to the Handlers. Rollback if necessary. This avoids producers and seems simpler (2) A pluggable/generic interface that hides the specific Message/Task Queue/Broker used to allow to serve different types of use cases with different performance requirements. For instance, I'd like to be able to use Kafka, Faust, Pulsar, MQTT (Mosquitto) and others

What do you think? Especially for (2) a good idea or something similar?

i have a great idea but not the skills required to excute it, can you guys help?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:33 PM PDT

    hi!

first of all i just want to say because this is my first try at programming in a long time ,and i wanted to use a languge that is not heavy (file size) i choose to use p5.js since it can be used on the browser.

ok, so my idea is pretty much just solving geomtrial promblems.

now i think it's possible because it can broken down to smaller parts:

input - you press and drag in order to create the shape of the problem

correction - you can input the length and sizes of components (angles and lines) and it will redraw with those "constraints"

data base - a whole bunch of "if" statements thet represnt geomtry sentences("if 2 lines are equal size in atriangle the 2 angles the connects them are also equal")

output - every action it does it prints and in the end you get every piece of information about the problem.

so where do i need help?

    - i dont know how to structure all the code and if i should try it in a diffrent programming languge.

    - i dont have the slightest clue about how to make even the first step

so can any of you lead me to a course/wiki/tutorial anything that can explain some of this stuff?

    [HTML/CSS] Basic video help

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:26 PM PDT

Hi I have a 3840 × 2160 video to be played in the background for a small personal project, however I am having some issues when opening it in safari as the video is zoomed in, and can be scrolled up and down. Just started learning HTML and CSS so go easy! I would like to have the video playing full screen, in the browser, as like you view it on a media player.

    HTML:

    <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> </head> <body> <<!-- The video --> <video autoplay muted loop id="myVideo"> <source src="la.mov" type="video/mp4"> </video> </body> </html>

    CSS:

    #myVideo { position: fixed; right: 0; bottom: 0; min-width: 100%; min-height: 100%; }

My company paired me with a mentor who is a self-taught developer. What questions should I ask tomorrow when we meet for coffee?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:36 PM PDT

The goal is to become a full-stack developer by 2020. I was accepted into a career mentorship program at work and from there my career mentor paired me with a mentor on the software development team who was completely self-taught (like I will be).

I'm not sure how to utilize a mentor though. Do I ask him about high-level programming concepts or for networking within my company or do I show him my code and get feedback? Or all of the above?

My company expects that senior software engineers mentor younger ones, so this isn't new. I could use advice on how to make the most of this mentorship.

    Thank you in advance.

What language/ skill I need to learn to improve myselt?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 08:10 PM PDT

    Hello brothers,

I had been learned Java in 3 months (from 12-2018 to 3-2019). Then I've been working as a intern at a start up company in PHP for over 3 months. I use html, css, simple js (jquery, ajax) laravel in my work.

Now my work is likely easy to me, use only some skill to clone interface, use my company's source code to build backend. I built a website with only 2-3 days. But I'm scaring I couldn't improve my programing skill if I continue work like that.

So what language I should learn now for not only improve my skill but also helpful for php web. My company doesn't want me learn something new because they have a lot of small website job and want me spend all time to work.

Thank you everyone who listening, my english maybe not enough good.
