How useful is Digipen’s CSGD degree outside the gaming industry. Posted: 16 Jul 2019 04:39 AM PDT Need some advice here. For some context, I'm from Singapore, and we have a local Digipen campus. Somehow, to my surprise, I ended up with an offer from Digipen for Computer Science and Game Design despite my less than impressive GPA (2.78, my fault for slacking off back in the day) and the fact that it was at the bottom of my list for university and course choices. The only other offer I had was from UNSW Australia, Computer Science (2 years instead of 3, thanks to my diploma). Is a Computer Science degree from Digipen worth it? Or is it better if I take the offer from UNSW despite the costs? Note: I took a year off to work as a developer in a small startup, both to instill some discipline into myself, some practical experience and a good referral for university applications. The last one didn't help me as much as I hoped it did. Note: as for my own thoughts about the video game industry, I'm honestly rather neutral at best, and 'I don't like the idea, but at the same time I don't hate it' at worst. If I end up as a video game developer, so be it. If I end up as a software engineer, so be it. Been stressing over this dilemma for quite some time now, especially since the deadline is in a few days. Hoping some advice would help me come to a decision and put my mind at ease. Vectorized Image Classification Posted: 15 Jul 2019 07:04 PM PDT In this post, I'm going to introduce a set of algorithms that can quickly classify images. Running on an iMac, it took just 1.363 seconds per image (on average) from start to finish (including all pre-processing time) to classify the dataset of images below. Note that this is the amount of time it took per image to train the classification algorithm, as opposed to the amount of time it would have taken to classify a new image after the algorithm had already been trained. Like all of my algorithms, these algorithms have a low-degree polynomial runtime. https://www.researchgate.net/project/Information-Theory-SEE-PROJECT-LOG [link] [comments] |

Starting a team project with close to zero experience, scared of inadequacy. Posted: 15 Jul 2019 05:16 AM PDT I'm not in college, was a dropout. My teammates are either in college for Computer Science or graduated, and they're much more experienced in programming. Meanwhile, I failed horribly and dropped out a while ago, though I've been seeking real experience. They accepted me despite this huge knowledge and experience gap, and I'm just stressed and nervous about what to expect when the development starts. I'm not sure why I wrote this post, but I needed to get this off my chest and hopefully receive some insight or advice. Thank you for reading. [link] [comments] |
Is there a site/app that amasses tech and cs-related articles? Posted: 15 Jul 2019 10:24 AM PDT I find that when I'm waiting for an appointment or something, I just waste my time scrolling on reddit. Occassionally I find a post linking an article about a new technology (whether its a phone feature, programming-related feature, etc), and I enjoy reading through the article. This way I'm learning about and keeping up to date with new technologies. Is there a site or app that aggregates articles like this? I know there are individual blogs or news sites but navigating to each individually is annoying, especially because there might not even be a new post. I know reddit somewhat meets this function, but there's all sorts of posts that aren't blogs or articles. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
What modules do you recommend? Posted: 15 Jul 2019 07:02 AM PDT Hello,i am going in my final semester (currently studying Computer science conversion).Which non analytics modules do you recommend? Performance of Computer Systems Web Services in Cloud Computing Designing and developing mobile apps with Android Advanced Data Structures in Java My personal choices are cloud, android, iot, ruby, Ubiquitous(not sure about this one).(wants a job as developer). How can I retain concepts that I learn? Posted: 15 Jul 2019 05:16 AM PDT Hello, I have a problem where I feel like I sometimes forget concepts that I learn, even though when I learnt them, I felt like I fully understood them. For example, I wanted to give a simple explanation of turing machines and decidability to another redditor in another thread, and I realized that I have almost forgotten these concepts that I spent weeks learning when I took a theory of computation course, even though, at the time of learning them, I felt like I completely understood them. How do you retain concepts that you learnt but haven't used in a while? I'm still an undergrad student, so I don't get to use Turing machines too much outside a theory of computation course. The same happened to me with hashtables; I fully understood the concept and even implemented it in C when I took a data structures course, but this was 2 years ago. When I wanted to use it recently, I had to look up a reference and read about it again because I didn't use it in the past two years. I am grateful for any and all answers! :) [link] [comments] |
