Who's really enjoying web development here? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:07 PM PDT First of all, I want to start off by saying I love coding and building software. I'm currently building quite a big project for the past 6 month. I'm coding a web app and a mobile app. I have been programming for two years now and I also study computer science. However I'm staring to get frustrated with web development. There is just so much annoying stuff about it like having to support so many different browsers and device sizes. Having so many different frameworks and packages I feel I need to know. Everytime some weird problems and errors pop up. Currently I have trouble with getting my web app that uses server side rendering hosted. Sure I might just be a bad/unexperienced developer but in other programming fields I have a lot less problems for example mobile development (especially with flutter). However I really want to finish my project so I cannot just quit web development. Am I the only one dealing with these issues/feelings? How do you deal these problems? [link] [comments]
Do you build websites from scratch or with a platform like Wordpress? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 02:47 PM PDT Web Dev has mainly been a very enjoyable hobby for me. I mostly start from zero. I have some experience with Wordpress and similar platforms. When you're building a website for a customer do you write most of the code on your own or do you customize a pre-built template? Does it depend on the situation? If yes, please elaborate. [link] [comments]
Should you form an LLC for your first web app? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 05:31 AM PDT I see the benefits of forming an LLC for a web app, but this is my first one. I have no idea how successful or profitable it will be, so it seems like overkill to spend $500 + meeting with a lawyer (100's more) to create a formal business. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

How to create a chrome extension that will scrape data and upload it in Airtable? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 03:11 PM PDT Hello, I would like to create a Chrome extension that will fetch certain data from an Amazon listing and then upload it into and Airtable document, with just the click of a button. This would be for my personal use. I spent way too much time copying&pasting stuff. Data would be : - Product picture - URL - Title, brand name, bullet point, description - Options from the drop down menu (e.g. sizes, colors) Question : 1) How do I go to create something like this by myself, with no prior coding experience ? (except some basic html and css, which I don't think will be useful at all here) 2) If you think this will be way too long for me to learn the right skill for this project. What question should I ask a freelancer before hiring him ? I hope this make sense, Thank you for reading ! [link] [comments]
Am I using the best languages for a fast, responsive, modern looking website? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 03:01 PM PDT I am unsure whether this is the best place to ask this question, but here it goes. So I am looking to make a website using the following languages in the .NET environment: I havent been developing for too long and this is my first project. I am wondering if the languages I have listed above are the best to use for what I want to achieve, I want my site to be: Here are some examples of the kind of sites I want to develop: Could anyone suggest a good set of languages to use for this type of work or do I just need more knowledge in the languages I have already listed? Can you “hide” a webpage on the internet? Posted: 11 Jun 2019 02:13 PM PDT I know that sounds strange but bear with me. Let's say my website is www.xyz.com and I have 2 customers... Sam & Jeff. I want to make page on my website that only Sam knows about and can see, so I make a page called xyz.com/sam19238jdjdei And I only tell Sam about the link. Can I hide this page from the internet and google? So (in this case) Jeff would never be able to see or find it via search engines or source code. Sorry I know that's weird but its just an idea that popped into my head! Thanks [link] [comments]

Django and Vue project's static content is being blocked because of MIME type mismatch. Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:57 PM PDT I have made a simple Django and Vue project using Django and Vue CLI. It calls a REST API and displays some words in the window. It is working fine locally, Django serves the app connecting to the Node server. I have deployed it to Heroku but the browser is blocking the static content, which is very important. I get the following error: I have read about it on Mozilla but I don't know how to fix the issue. Can anyone share their knowledge of the issue? [link] [comments]
Advice on first Freelance project Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:42 PM PDT Hey guys! So I got my first gig! I have to admit I might be a bit over my head but the guy knows that and understands everything and agreed to give it a go. I need some advice on the stack and and path to take. Take into account that this is also a huge learning experience for me. So the guy has an apartment rental business (around 10 apartments) but he only does it through airbnb, booking.com, etc. And now wants to have his own website to start being more professional and getting more clients(apartments), so the site would be the start of his brand. Now, he would like to showcase all the apartments and having the option for customers to book them, and so would have to take payments too. Of course it would be responsive and I was thinking of a SPA layout for the landing page with some key aspects and then adding some extra pages like a blog, separate apartment listing page, etc. So it would end up being a multiple page thing. For the front-end I was thinking of React with redux for state management and material ui for the components and layout. And of course CSS for customized styling of the components. Now the backend is where I'm not sure how to go about it. Because I want to give him something he can manage by himself after the site is up and running so maybe a cms is the best route. Has anyone tried Strapi.io? or could give some other option. Or if you think the best would be to just go Fullstack and code the server side with a simple approach, like just a small database, express, node and maybe linking the bookings to his email or calendar. I have done simple backend stuff were small things and never had to think about maintenance. I also thought about start by doing just the front end so he sees how everything is going to look and later on going with the backend to add reservations and so on, but maybe this would not be the best decision from the architecture design. All opinions, encouragement or critics are welcome. Thanks!! [link] [comments]
flushdns does not seem to help... (question) Posted: 11 Jun 2019 01:22 PM PDT So I have had this problem for a long time, I want to migrate a site from one server to another. Once I change the nameservers or A record IP my laptop takes FOREVER to propagate the changes....however my iMac (in the same house on the same internet connection) sees the changes much much faster. I've tried going into cmh and running ipconfig/flushdns which suggests that is successfully flushes the dns, however it does not appear to propagate. I ran "nslookup -debug" on one site I was working on and the TTL (saw this suggestion in another post on /r/webdev/) was anywhere from 4 hours to 1 day, which is probably pretty accurate from past experiences. So why can I see the changes almost right away on my iMac and it takes so long on my Win10 laptop? [link] [comments]

Freelance Pack + Questions on Invoicing Posted: 11 Jun 2019 10:49 AM PDT Hi folks, First, an overview of who I am and my experience. I've frequently joined companies as an IT Support Analyst and worked on creating them a new website or intranet on the side. This has helped not only build up a substantial portfolio, but helped boost my self-taught web dev skills. I primarily work with Wordpress or templates (simply due to time constraints and usability) but often jump into the code too, bolstered by my Computer Science degree. Now I've been coming across plenty of website companies who offer website solutions at astronomical cost. These tend to be charged not only per page, but also per feature and they often have a base rate for hosting too. I look at the industry and think damn, I could do that. So for a while I've toyed with creating my own web design business. I'd target small-medium companies, see what their current websites do and if I can do better. Now, I've joined a new company and their website is dreadful. Not great for SEO, generating leads or being the slightest bit different from the Wordpress theme they were created from. I have put my neck out to the company saying 'I could do better than that' afterthey were impressed by a better Sharepoint-based intranet I created. My question for this is, should I look to charge my own company here? Should I ask for a raise before cracking on with something that is well out of the remit of my job description? My other question revolves around a freelance starter pack... Has anyone bought this freelancing pack? https://studywebdevelopment.com/freelancing.html I like that it has templates for how to invoice as I've often thought it is a bit stupid how some companies charge per page, per feature etc. I also like the checklists you can put in front of customers, all formatted and with colours and formatting for your company look too. Is it worth forking out $99 for? How do you charge your customers? Cheers! [link] [comments]
