    Is this the right career for me?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 12:51 PM PDT

    Hello, sorry if theres a post similar to this but I need someones help/advice.

    I'm 23 year old who decided to "chase money" right after high school. And after 5 years of chasing I've had enough, I decided last night to check college courses and I stumbled upon web development. After a few searches and Youtube videos I was excited, I though I found something I was finally interested in and willing to make a career out of (struggled to find passion after high school for any post-secondary schooling) I went to sleep telling my self I well start learning today.

    Fast forward to this morning and I saw a reddit post about someone who was burnt out and I read through it as well as some of the comments and it kind of scared me. A lot of the comments were about the fast moving/adapting languages that they are unable to keep up with vs the 18year old's who are learning all those languages and frameworks.

    The reason the post scared me is because I am a 23 year old who has 0 experience/knowledge about coding/web development. All I have under my tool belt is a couple youtube videos that explained "why" web development and 'where' to start. Even then I don't know where to start, I have no idea if it's too late for me to get into this. I saw that you can be self taught, or through my initial research I can give 10K to a college for someone to teach me and I don't know if I should anymore.

    Sorry to keep rambling I honestly am stuck and would like some help, do you recommend I leave this sub reddit and not look back at web development or is there something here for me. If I should give this a shot where should I start? Thank you in advance.

    Website that automatically posts social media posts using hashtags.

    Posted: 26 May 2019 11:30 AM PDT

    My friend and I are trying to build a website for a school club which is conducting an activity that will involve posting pictures on social media with a certain hashtag. We were looking for a space where we could compile all these social media posts into one, and thought that it'd be neat if there was a method where the website can somehow pull data from social media sites and automatically upload posts with certain hashtags onto the site. For reference, in a sports game or some big event, there maybe a display board that displays all social media posts with a certain hashtag.

    I did a little bit of research, but I couldn't find a mechanism that would actually link the website with the social media. I also don't just want it to be a link, but a full display of the picture and text on the website straight from the social media. I can think of a few options(please note that I'm still a beginner).

    Option 1. somehow automatically syncing the social media and website posts (this would be magical). Bringing up the exact display of social media directly onto the website.

    option 2. compile links of relevant social media posts with hashtags into a database, then manually post them onto the website. (it'll most likely be videos, pics, words, so I'm not too sure how I could go about this).

    option 3. If there is no way to sync social media and website automatically, some other convenient way to post on the website. Maybe a google form that puts the data into a spreadsheet and website that formats it to look like social media?

    We have an idea for what this site wants it to do, but due to our lack of experience we aren't sure how we could achieve this, so any words of help or advice would sincerely be appreciated!!!

    Making a website for game reviews/content/player submitted art work

    Posted: 26 May 2019 01:41 PM PDT

    I want to make a website to write and create content for a game my circle of friends play. I make websites part time. My question is, do I need legal permission to use the games logo or graphics on my website? Do I just have to put disclaimers and have a policy page that basically says I don't own any of their logos and or art work? I googled this but I'm getting no where so I figured I'd ask here. Would it be illegal for me to put ads and affiliate links on there? I imagine the legality issue would only arise if I put ads and affiliate links because now I would be profiting on their behalf.

    Website ideas that are "complex" enough for a final year project at university?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 02:59 PM PDT

    Currently in planning on what I want to do for a final year university project for my computing course. Web development and UX are my strongest areas so far and I've been getting 80+ marks on web development assignments so I'd like to do something web based.

    My second strongest area is HCI and UX design which I could incorporate into the project either way (i.e doing evaluation testing and improving the user experience as much as possible in the design etc.)

    My only concern is that I can't think of any project ideas involving HTML, CSS, PHP, Jquery etc. that seem "complex" enough to justify the project taking more or less a year. The obvious idea would be a mobile application, but we're seemingly supposed to be using things we've learned already and basically combining 2 or more uni modules into one large assignment, and we haven't learned anything about mobile app development (I'd be developing for android) and it makes me hesitant to commit and say I'll make an app.

    I'm confident with HTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript/Jquery, some Ajax and SQL to be used with a database. I've thought about making some sort of social network thing, or maybe an education tool with different subjects and some social or competitive elements to it, but whilst I can design layouts for desktop and mobile quite well I feel like doing a mobile website instead of an app would seem a bit lazy? I would make an athletic training site that tracks your progress and such...but I've already done this as an assignment for web development and creating similar things for a final year project isn't allowed.

    If that truly is the case then I probably could bite the bullet and learn how to program a proper mobile app but I'd honestly like to stick with something I'm really confident with and know I enjoy.

    JS breaking text input

    Posted: 26 May 2019 02:43 PM PDT

    I have this HTML:

    <div id="chrome"><div id="chromeHeader"><form><input type="text" name="url" placeholder="URL"><h1>Website Content</h1></form></div></div>

    This is my JS:

    dragElement(document.getElementById("chrome"));function dragElement(elmnt) {var pos1 = 0, pos2 = 0, pos3 = 0, pos4 = 0;if (document.getElementById(elmnt.id + "header")) {document.getElementById(elmnt.id + "header").onmousedown = dragMouseDown;} else {elmnt.onmousedown = dragMouseDown;}function dragMouseDown(e) {e = e || window.event;e.preventDefault();pos3 = e.clientX;pos4 = e.clientY;document.onmouseup = closeDragElement;document.onmousemove = elementDrag;}function elementDrag(e) {e = e || window.event;e.preventDefault();pos1 = pos3 - e.clientX;pos2 = pos4 - e.clientY;pos3 = e.clientX;pos4 = e.clientY;elmnt.style.top = (elmnt.offsetTop - pos2) + "px";elmnt.style.left = (elmnt.offsetLeft - pos1) + "px";}function closeDragElement() {document.onmouseup = null;document.onmousemove = null;}}

    When I remove the JS I am able to type in the input box, but with it I am not.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks.

    Recomendations for LMS/Udemy "clone" in the cloud?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 10:21 AM PDT

    Hey.

    I am looking for recommendations to existing platforms and solutions where an admin can create "courses" with images text and possibly videos, then after each "section" there is a quiz that has to be answered to proceed (similar to how udemy works), integration possibilities should include creating users, assigning courses, removing access to courses, deleting users, and possibly getting a users progress (use case: Users buy courses in a separate system, and via an integration, they are created in the quiz application and assigned the correct course).

    Does anyone have any suggestions on a good platform that does this?

    Netlify and plain html/js/css hosting

    Posted: 26 May 2019 02:06 PM PDT

    Ok, this is going to be a bang your head against a wall question but i just can't get it sorted. I'm just a hobbyist and wanted to prop up something i've been working on to try and get my friends to click around a minute. It's literally just html/css/js files. So i got all set up and tried to follow any and all instructions I could find. Connected it to my github repo all that jazz. And it works. If i go to [nonsense netlify stuff].netlify.com/main.html....

    what do i have to do to get [nonsens netlify stuff].netlify.com to show main.html is basically the crux of the question. There are no build commands, no fancy stuff. super simple. Just messing around with using api's and stuff, but I do want to make a conscious effort to not cut corners and learn why/how/when things aren't quite right.

    Docker's PHP image uses HTTPS be default.

    Posted: 26 May 2019 06:08 AM PDT

    Hi,

    I'm currently following this tutorial. For some reason, whenever I run the image and try to access the website I'm coding, the browser automatically redirects me to using HTTPS and I can't prevent it. Obviously it throws an error because SSL isn't configured (it's still my development machine). I can't seem to find any solution to that problem on the Internet, and it even seems I'm the only one with the problem !

    Does anyone have an idea why it's doing that ?

    EDIT : So I changed the content of the Dockerfile and removed the line that creates the new vhost. It removes the problem concerning HTTPS, but this time I have a "403 Forbidden" error.

    What is this window & how did they do it?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 06:05 AM PDT

    When you go to this website and click on the visual color selection field (below the manual hex input), a window(?) with the color selection opens in the website. It doesn't appear to be part of the DOM and it doesn't seem to be it's own browser window, although it does appear in any additional tabs & browser windows opened. My system is Chrome in macOS.

    So what is this thing? Is it some web API that I can't find or a Mac specific thing? And how do they open it?

    Property does not exist on type 'FormData' HELP

    Posted: 26 May 2019 12:32 PM PDT

    I've been working on getting Cloudinary set up on my personal portfolio site (working on the MEAN stack) and I'm having some issues sending the FormData object that contains the image and the upload_preset. I think that it's never actually putting these things into my FormData object, even though I call formData.append() on the data necessary. In debugging this, I've discovered the issue that it seems like my FormData objects have no properties!

    Higher in my code I've got:

    let imageFormData = new FormData();

    imageFormData.append('file', projectImage);

    imageFormData.append('upload_preset', this.CLOUDINARY_UPLOAD_PRESET);

    I've got the line causing the issue:

    console.log(imageFormData.entries());

    I'm working in WebStorm and it autocompletes entries(), but when I try to compile it it does not compile, claiming that: Property 'entries' does not exist on type 'FormData'. This also happens if I use .get(), .has(), getAll(), keys(), values(), delete(), or set(). It seems like the only function that doesn't cause this error is append().

    In addition, when I console.log(imageFormData), it appears in my browser console to be empty, but to include prototypes for each of those functions. If anyone knows how to fix this that would be very much appreciated! Thanks all!

    Edit: as a note, if I don't use any of these functions and just send the FormData to cloudinary with:

    this.http.post(this.CLOUDINARY_URL, imageFormData, {headers: headers}).map(res => res.json())

    I get an error 400 that I need to specify the 'upload_preset' field, so I'm inclined to think that the append() function doesn't throw any errors, but also doesn't work is is just skipped in execution.

    Requesting infinite scrolling website

    Posted: 26 May 2019 12:27 PM PDT

    I have to scrap a website with infinite scrolling. I used 'request' and 'cheerio' to return the html of site, as expected it did not return the complete html.

    So, how do I get the complete html ? Is it even possible with cheerio ?

    request('https://www.website.com', (error, response, html) => { if (!error && response.statusCode == 200) { console.log(html); } });

    Is there an easy way to switch from BlueHost to another web hosting service?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 08:36 AM PDT

    Hello!

    I am not really big into web development, but decided to start a blog about a year ago and have been trying to find time to work on it.

    BlueHost at the time looked great and had really good prices. I was a bit surprised when the renewal charge came in and was way more expensive than before. Seems I missed the hidden text at the bottom that the price was only for 1 year.

    I saw a lot of other hosting sites have cheaper prices and I can get my refund from BlueHost until tomorrow. Is it easy to swap to another hosting site that uses Wordpress too? Is it just better to stay with BlueHost at this point?

    Thank you!

    How to scrape links from different url on client side?

    Posted: 26 May 2019 11:50 AM PDT

    Hi Guys and Girls

    I want to add javascript to a website, so if a user visits, it scrapes the links from another website and write them in the DOM.

    Website 1 - On document.onload, scrape links from Website 2 and write them to the DOM in Website 1.

    I tried 'cheerio' JS to scrape but I can't run node JS on my webserver.

    How would you do it? Thanks for any (beginner friendly) Ideas :)
