Wanting a challenge website for practicing HTML, CSS, and Javascript

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there was a website that had designs of websites that one can try to implement with HTML & CSS? I am just looking for a way to practice what I am learning. On top of this, maybe even add a little bit of interactivity with Javascript and jQuery. At work I use React right now and get the job done, but just want to further my front end development skills through challenges like these. Thanks! Let me know if you happen to know of any.

What are the basics knowledge for a javascript interview?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

So I'm interviewing for entry level UI role. The interview is on javacript. I'm fairly experienced in interviewing for entry level ish roles, but I've never used javascript specifically on an interview. I know other languages well, but javascript is not really my strong suit, although I've done a couple projects on React/javacript/etc, javascript still remains somewhat of a mystery.

I'd like to know what are the basics I should know going into the interview? The gotchas? What are the important things from the basics - midlevel knowledge? Any help would be appreciated.

    Bring me your nightmare stacks

Have you ever worked on an insane stack and no one at work understood how antiquated, idiosyncratic, and brittle it was? Let me hear what you've worked on! I too have Seen Some Shit (TM) and would love to sympathize.

Did anyone record the Microsoft Business App Webinar today? I really need it.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:02 PM PDT

I promised a colleague I'd record the webinar today in his absence, but the recording stopped early and only got through the first 30 minutes.

I feel so bad, and I really want to find a recording of the whole thing. It would really be saving my butt.

Possible to make network tab in chrome dev tools work like Firefox's?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:39 AM PDT

In Chrome, any time you click on something it, it wants to debug it and takes me out of the network tab. In FireFox, you are free to click on anything and watch the network traffic.

EDIT: Got it. In the sources tab, on the right-hand side, go to Breakpoints > XHR/fetch Breakpoints > Uncheck "Any XHR/Fetch".

Books to understand web development as a Marketer

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:38 AM PDT

    Hi webdev!

My boss is looking for some books that would help her understand the concepts of webdev, in layman's terms, she wants to understand what the hell do I do :)

From what she told me, she wants to understand what the different languages do and where should you use them e.g. what are the uses for PHP and why would you use it instead of "x" language.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Feeling lost...

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:56 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I've kind of hit a weird wall of sorts, and I just can't make a commitment to learning anything. I think I'm just a bit overwhelmed at all the things I need to learn to get a junior position, and it's hard to judge whether I know enough of a prerequisite technology to move on to the next.

Example - React. I have no idea whether I know enough JS to move on to react yet, but I know react is super high in demand so I feel like I should learn it.

Then therre's CSS. I haven't learned a pre-processor like SASS yet, and my recall of CSS grid isn't super clear, but I can't tell if I should focus on one more than the other.

Then there's the camp that will likely tell me to just do some projects and I totally respect that option. It would be nice to have some work to actually show for learning all this, so I should probably setup a portfolio page, but again, I feel like I'd be googling so much even for a basic site.

I guess it's normal to feel like this, I just really want to progress, and I think I'm overanalysing things.

Any tips for me moving forward? Massively appreciate any responses, thanks guys!

Can users tell the difference between webviews and native apps?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:43 PM PDT

Every developer I've talked to gives sort of biased opinions on this topic which makes sense because their job is either "ionic dev" or "iOS dev" but from a users perspective, is their a noticable difference?

How to go about developing a social media style search for organizations on a college campus?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:10 PM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but I am very inexperienced in web design and simply want to figure out the best way to realize my idea. Essentially what I'm looking for is a way to allow users to search for a certain keyword and pull up a list of organizational profiles that contain said keyword. Google custom search API isn't really what I'm looking for, as I'm thinking of more Yelp styled search results (Title, image, contact info, and short description) as opposed to simple text based ones.

Basically, are there any premade tools or APIs that would help me accomplish this?

    What would you charge?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:46 AM PDT

I have no knowledge of website design so I hired someone to create a website for me. Trying to figure out if the web developer I'm working with is worth it. It's a pretty simple site, under 10 pages. It does have buttons and a shop. The shop has different product sale choices, one of which is automatic download of an ebook. It has a forum, like an interactive message board so I know that requires some coding and some art/vector badges. What would you say a fair price for all that would be, or just a range off the top of your head??? It's build on the Squarespace pro/biz platform

How to prepare for web development class

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:27 PM PDT

Hi, so I'm new to web development, and I'm taking a class on web development at my university. And frankly, I'm worried about the course load/contents. I know basic Java, Python, and R, but I don't know how I can learn and digest 5 different languages in a quarter(HTML, CSS, Js, PHP, SQL). To all you web geniuses out there, what's the best way to learn these web languages?

    Better form submission reliability?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:27 PM PDT

I maintain about 50 sites, mostly WordPress. The issue that has haunted me since the beginning is unreliable contact form submissions, this is, the client contacting me and saying "I haven't received emails from the site contact form in weeks" or "some come through, others not" etc.

I've tried several SMTP plugins including WP SES, Postman SMTP, etc, but at some point, they fail.

I wanted to know what do you use or do to make contact forms super reliable on your sites. Any tips and tricks? third party services that you may recommend?

I'm trying to determine my most used css properites so that I can begin to create helper classes to abstract them out or determine a utility css framework to choose -- how do I do that?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:33 PM PDT

As title states -- I'm looking for some sort of script to run through my CSS files and count out the properties and values.

    example: I have 35 font-weight properties, and 3 are bold, 17 are regular and 15 are 400

I'd like to scan a few of my files and look for some repetitive items that I can start turning into classes that do the same thing. The idea behind that is to create some helper classes that allow me to do less CSS that is very common and turn those into classes. I spent some time googling and couldn't find something but I'm not even sure what to look up.

Any help with this. I'm not opposed to scripting this out if necessary. Just wondering if there is a tool out there and what it is called or how to search for it --thanks!

How to host sites that aren't ready for a portfolio but that I still may want to come back to eventually?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:31 AM PDT

I'm learning web dev at the moment. I want to create a few static sites to practice my front-end skills before moving on and learning back-end. Where / how could I host these where they can be shared and viewed by myself and others? I don't want to have to pay for hosting. Ideally I would like them to all be grouped together, and if possible, with the files and code to be along with them. Github is something I would rather keep more "pure" for my presentation ready sites. Would codepen work for something like this? I'm just not sure.

    Web Accessible Work Schedule

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:11 PM PDT

If I had a table (such as the one below) that organized jobs throughout the day for workers, what would be the most web accessible way to do this?

    Time Joe George
    7:00 Trash Water Cooler
    7:30 Front Desk Phone Lines
    8:00 Break Front Desk
    8:30 Phone Lines Break

I assume its a table, but if this got long (what am I supposed to do at 15:00) or if there were lots of workers, I feel as though it would be near impossible for a screen reader to use effectively.

    Thoughts?

So far I have shirts from stuff I use at work (Docker/Elasticsearch/Slack) but im always looking for new tech shirts/wearables. Any ideas?

    Where to start?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:02 PM PDT

So I currently am in my final year of university and final project is to create a web app for a popular attraction in my local time. It'll have a members area, a shop, an admin version of the site, quizzes and games. I'm looking for advice regarding where to start. In most of my web projects I begin with the page designs then move onto members areas and things but is this the right move?

Where should I start and how should I plan this so I can use my as efficiently as possible?

Tips for passing a culture fit interview?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

I've been doing this jazz for about 4 years now. Independent projects to eventually doing web development professionally for a few companies.

Recently, I made it to the team interview for a potential employer. They gave me some technical questions and wanted to see if I was a good culture fit. I got a call saying they decided to go with a different candidate. The feedback my recruiter got was "He knew his the tech stack, but we didn't like what he said about a former employee." I backtracked through the interview in my head, but I was careful not to say anything poorly as my mother in law who works in HR said to avoid saying anything badly and if you do, say 2 nice things and something they could improve on.

The problem I'm facing is that these arbitrary reason seem to follow me interview to interview. Citi said I had trouble staying on topic, So I practiced and fixed it. I even write on my whiteboard the job requirements before an interview as to stay on topic. Another company manager was 30 minutes late to my interview and said I had an attitude with him, but I used my best customer service voice.

I'm trying to figure out these culture fit interviews because when the company just does a tech interview I'm fine, but I can't seem to get past culture fit. Is there anyway I can do to improve or change my mindset. I'm at my wits end here.
