Is it possible to be a designer and developer, or should I just pick one and go for it? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:43 PM PDT I am interested in both the design and development of websites. Lately I've been trying to do both, but it seems kind of overwhelming. I like both aspects and I know they are very different. Would I be more valuable trying to get a job if I just picked one and went for it? [link] [comments]

How effective is cold calling for acquiring new web development clients? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:53 PM PDT Has anyone tried this? At the moment I am looking for work (see my forhire post) and am struggling to get any bites. I'm looking at cold calling businesses and asking if they need web development work done. Has anyone had success with this? Would you mind sharing methods? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:32 AM PDT Hello guys, I bought this domain a while back and I thought the name fits, so I built on it a tutorial search engine. The link is: https://tutorialindex.com Features:
Why I created this? Because I wanted to learn how to do it :) What do you guys think? What shall I improve? I will add more websites to the search soon Thank you, Cristian [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:58 PM PDT The current Director of Engineering (my boss) is leaving and has asked me (Mid-Level) and another co-worker to interview a potential replacement. He's asked me to come up with some non-technical questions to ask the potential new boss in an interview later this week. For example asking how he would support my career development. I'd love to know what questions you guys would ask in this situation [link] [comments]
As a self-taught developer, how long did it take you from knowing absolutely nothing to job ready? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:19 PM PDT Also what are the tools and learning resources you found most effective in getting there? [link] [comments]
Creating a secure form for input of sensitive info like SSN. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:35 PM PDT I'm a self taught web dev who has been learning HTML/CSS/Javascript(vanilla, jquery and react) for about a year. My uncle has a friend who is starting a business, and wants someone to help build a form for inputing customer information which includes sensitive info such as a social security number. My uncle gave him my number to talk to me and see if I can do it. I'm cheap because I'm inexperienced, and he is starting a business so can't pay much. Win/win. I'm not sure what the business is but we'll be talking soon. I can DESIGN a contact/input form very easily and have made quite a few. All my web apps and site examples I've made have just been on github pages, so I'm not experienced on the server side of things and I've never actually dabbled in languages like PHP though and feel like this can be a good project to learn on. We are going to meet tomorrow to discuss it and if it is way above my skill level I won't pursue it. As someone who is versed in front end web development, I'm wondering if this sounds like something a novice can accomplish, and if so what are my next steps? Again, I'm self taught and thus good at learning how to solve problems I don't have experience in, but would like advice from more experience web devs. [link] [comments]

Is it true you should stick to doing 1 thing, and get really good at it? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:59 PM PDT So I've been hearing lately that you should stick to 1 language and just get really good at it in order to move up in your career. For example, job postings that specifically say 10+ years Java experience. Is that the case? I'm a "Fullstack" dev and work with Java, node and the big 3 frontend frameworks... and I just feel I would get bored if I had to stick to one thing. But I'm also sure I don't Java as well as someone who just commits their work to Java , so maybe it pays off? [link] [comments]
What's your favorite strategy for dealing with color variables? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:54 PM PDT Hoping for advice from someone with experience on a large project with other developers We're gonna begin refactoring some of our css, and our color palette is getting some attention. We have a palette file that just defines some global css vars, and they're named like "dark-gray-1", "turtle-green" etc We also want to introduce themes so I don't think our current approach works well at scale One idea we had is to just break things into a themes file, create like "input-text-border", "input-text-label", "typography-light" variables and maybe create a less file with colors and fill them out, but this seems kinda verbose We've also seen some projects make massive palettes of every color, like blue-10, blue-20 up to blue-100, and any mockup has to use from one of these colors, but that seems like overkill Anyone got something that they're proud of and works well? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:40 PM PDT Hello, I'm in college right now and my major is information systems, but I'm not sure it alligns well with what I want to do in the future .. I am interested in the business side of technology and management, but I also like web development and cybersecurity, UXUI, etc I'm aware both management skills as well as coding can be learned without a degree at all but.. not really sure what to do about this.. I feel as though CS is overall more valuable for a degree but tbh I am staying away for one main reason and that is the math.. I don't think I would be as successful in it as CIS Is it possible to go into any of the careers I want with a CIS degree? Is it truly as useless as people say it is? Should I just suck it up and switch to CS no matter how much I doubt myself? Really lost, any advice would help.. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:04 PM PDT How do you handle a client who will need a privacy policy and/or T&Cs on their website for say a contact form? Do you tell them before starting that they will need to consult an attorney? What is your process? [link] [comments]

Frameworks to create an engaging web assistant for surveys? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:49 PM PDT Hey! I'm looking for a framework that makes it easier to create an assistant to fill out forms or surveys. I don't want to make an old traditional and boring form. It should feel more like an assistant that basically asks you a bunch of questions and has different paths based on the answer. I'm thinking about something like this. Does anyone of you know something like a free framework for that? Or do you have to build something like that from scratch? [link] [comments]
"Don't ask again on this device", how does it work? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:21 PM PDT When we log into accounts where 2fa is enabled or sometimes, after entering username and password, it asks one of your secret questions, how do those work when you check the box "don't ask again"? I can think of storing something in localstorage, but something must be sent to the back end to tell the server, "hey, it's a trusted device, skip this process". How does the back-end know that it's a trusted device? [link] [comments]
How is this animation done on this site? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:19 PM PDT Hello, pretty new here to this subreddit but figured this would be a good place to ask this question. I was using tensorflow and saw this cool animation that they have on their home page on the right side and really wanted to know what technologies they used. When you change the tabs it changes the animation. Here is the link in case anyone wants to see. Wanted to know if anyone had any idea how they did this. Thanks! https://www.tensorflow.org/ [link] [comments]

Should I still continue to go to school for web dev? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:42 PM PDT My back story is that I graduated from high school in 2014, and I am still currently in community college ever since then. I feel part of the reason why I have stayed for so long was because I was perusing a degree in business to then later find out I did not want to do that. I took me a while to discover what I really want to do and that is being a web developer/programmer. So, I started this spring semester to take a computer science course and other classes required to get a degree in computer science. I honestly feel that really haven't learned anything good and it took forever for us to start our first HTML website -_-. I am doing very good in class but I feel that it is a waste of time! Especially even more now since I've been in school for a long time. While I am taking my classes, I am learning soooo much more online doing web development work using freecodecamp/treehouse/udemy then when I was in class. I feel that I'm going to continue to grow better by becoming a self taught programmer. My question is: should I still bother taking classes to cover credits to obtain a CS degree or not? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:31 PM PDT Upon testing a site we're finalizing, we've discovered that the PNG image used for the logo appears with a white background only in Samsung's browser. Here's how it's displayed: For reference, here's how it should be displaying, as it does in every other browser we've tested it in: Does anyone know why this is happening, or if there's a way to fix it? I've already tried Google, with no real results. Thanks guys! [link] [comments]
Anyone know what's going on with Google Sheets API? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:12 AM PDT I have a project using the Google Sheets API v3 to consume some spreadsheets as a poor man's database. Strictly read-only. And it's worked fine from years. Last night it broke. It works if I'm logged into the Google account that owns the sheets, but otherwise it doesn't work. I double checked and all the sheets are still published to the web and accessible anonymously. After doing some research I see that the API v3 is deprecated, but I can't find any info about whether/when it's going to be turned off, and that still wouldn't explain why it works when I'm logged in. I'd really like to avoid upgrading to v4 simply because right now there's no API key or authentication required, and it's going to be a pain in the ass for me to update my project to do so. Anyone know anything about what's going on? Is there a blog or news page or something for the API? [link] [comments] |
