Sharing tips to help with your Steam release

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:20 AM PDT

Finally the release day of my first Steam game has arrived.

However the road to get there was a bit bumpy and there was a number of things I wished I had known way back. So here is a list of things you should do WAY before releasing your game on Steam.

Here are some tips if you are going to ship on Steam that I've learnt along the way.

Steam certification, yes there is such a thing

Steam does actually have a lightweight certification for indie games. It's not like on itch where you just upload it and go.

Getting through Steam certification wasn't hard but I lost some time on it as I had not planned on it so I missed my planned release date with 2 weeks.

    Do's Cert

    • In your trailer ensure that you include a Steam logo if you display any other store front logo, otherwise thou shall fail cert.
    • Auto pause the game when a Steam overlay is opened.
    • Stop reacting to input if the Steam overlay is open.
    • Ensure that your ship package includes depots of all your supported platforms, the default is just your first depot.
    • Make sure that your launch parameters actually work after installed through Steam. You can test this with beta builds or your dev branch.

    Dont's Cert

    • Don't include any links to other store fronts, it's not allowed.
    • Don't try any fancy scheme to assign controllers like I did. Let user press a button to join.
    • Don't have any "work in progress, unpublished" achievements when submitting to cert.
    • Don't wait to long to press the cert button as it takes a few days to get through and your release date will get pushed forward.

Steam marketing tips to increase your chances of selling moooarrre

    • Create your Steam page early and ask people to wishlist the game. I've read that you can expect a conversion rate on about 10% from wishlist -> sold unit. Example if you want to sell 1 000 units then you need 10 000 wishlists entries.
    • Post frequent updates on your game about the progress.
    • Use Steam Navigation Traffic to see how your traffic develops and see what works to pull in people to your page.
    • Use your own Google Analytics account and connect it to your store pages to get more insights which external sites gives you traffic. It also helps to understand your audience, which you can use a decision for localization and pricing. You also get realtime analytic and on your launch day you want to see this with a bowl of popcorn and possible beer if you are old enough.
    • Setup a Google Alert with your game name that way you can react if your game pops up on a page or youtube etc. You can use that to help promote awareness of your game and you also see what gives you exposure.
    • Add your game to Giantbomb.com so streamers can select your game when streaming.
    • Add your game to Twitch with box art. You must first do the step above as the games must be on Giantbomb.com first.
    • Create a Steam homepage for your studio under creator homepage setup.
    • Us the connect with curators feature and invite as many relevant curators as possible. Most likely you will need all the marketing exposure you can get.
    • Ask for reviews from your beta testers, friends and family. You will need all the reviews you can get.
    • Do a press release, no matter how simple, and send it to mail@gamespress.com that will get you coverage on Gamasutra and a bunch of more pages as they pickup press releases from Game Press. Feel free to extend your list with more contacts.
    • Use Keymailer (at least the free version) to send keys to steamers, youtubers and review sites. The good part with keymailer is that you see how many followers the request has on social media, youtube, twitch etc. It also manages Steam keys for you with the ability to recycle them if they are not used.
    • Use the discount launch option to get more exposure.

And here is the tiny self promo that will get me into trouble, if you like the tips above and want to say thanks, feel free to buy a copy of Snake vs Snake on Steam or itch. It's ok if you don't but hope you found the tips useful.

Why do many gamers feel entitled to piracy?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:44 PM PDT

I saw a post today where a game developer said that piracy caused a devastating hit to their profits. The post got downvoted several times. A gamer then replied with reasons why piracy is justified.

    ---

When I was younger and didn't get paychecks, I pirated stuff. A lot of stuff. Games, music, movies, you name it.

Now that I can afford it, I don't pirate as much. I'm not a perfect angel, but I at least acknowledge one fact:

    Piracy is theft.

    • It doesn't matter if it's a non-violent crime.
    • It doesn't matter if the company is rich.
    • It doesn't matter if the DRM experience sucks.
    • It doesn't matter if digital content can be copied easily.
    • It doesn't matter if you just want to demo the game first.
    • It doesn't matter if you're broke.
    • It doesn't matter if the content isn't available in your region.
    • It doesn't matter if you weren't going to buy it anyway.

I'm not telling anyone to stop pirating.

I'm just tired of gamers saying things like "you solve piracy by making better games".

No. That's a sick and twisted thing to say to someone who invested massive time and effort into a product:

"Even though you prepared this thing, it's YOUR fault that I'm taking a copy from you and refusing to pay you for it!"

Do I pirate games? I haven't in a few years. Most pirated games have malware. Steam is convenient. And I like the satisfaction of paying for a product, receiving value, and knowing that the devs were rewarded for their efforts.

I'm not a saint. I still do legally/ethically ambiguous things. But I never blame content creators for my own actions.

Analysis type jobs for the gaming industry?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:51 AM PDT

I've been looking up jobs for Data Analytics and Data Science, outside the gaming industry there's a quite a bit of jobs.

But when it comes to game companies, whether it's consoles or MMOs, these jobs are extremely rare. Do these companies not hire Analysts?

I'm looking for an engine to use for a simple avatar-creation/dress up style game, does anybody here have a recommendation for a beginner?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:31 PM PDT

First post to this sub, I'm looking to make a simple game where you can make up your own custom frog or toad. Username checks out, I know. I've been looking for an engine to make my own avatar creation game but all that's been popping up is the games themselves. If you know those anime avatar creators or dress up games on sites like doll divine(think that's what it's called) I'm looking for something to make a game like that. Like most, I'd prefer a free engine or a one-time fee program rather than a subscription service. Thank you in advance.

Why does game companies' name often use "Games" in their second part instead of "Game"?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:51 AM PDT

Ex: Riot Games, Epic Games. Is it OK if I use "XXX Game" for a game company?

I'm not a naive English speaker so I don't know the reason.

Feedback Friday #333 - Triple Threat

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:07 PM PDT

    FEEDBACK FRIDAY #333

Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved!

Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback!

    Feedback Friday Rules:

Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game.

-Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo

-Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos!

-Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback!

-Upvote those who provide good feedback!

-Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them.
