I Finally Got and Accepted An Offer! Posted: 26 Mar 2019 02:27 AM PDT It took me 8 months. 8 months of nonstop applications, over 400 applications, around like 80 or so who bothered to reject me, around 9 phone calls. 3 interviews, all three that I made final rounds, for one of the companies they flew me overseas to interview and paid for everything (didn't get it tho lol). 3.5 GPA majoring in Information Science and Business Analytics from a top 5 ranked business school in the U.S. My point is keep grinding guys, if youre still looking for an internship or job live and breathe sending applications, redo your reusme til its absolutely perfect, and mos timportantly dont ever look back only forward [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Mar 2019 12:01 PM PDT Looking at jobs around the insanely expensive Vancouver and Im tired of seeing 60k - 80k jobs. Like, WTF? Id love to leave this overrated city. Im wondering if anyone can share their experience in going over to the USA (if any). [link] [comments] |
Immediate offer from a huge company after only a phonecall, am I getting scammed? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 02:13 PM PDT I was contacted by a recruiting agency to interview for a junior role that is a mix of dev with experience from my previous career. I took the phone interview with the hiring manager at the company I will be working with on Friday and it went really, really well. Monday morning I got a call back from my recruiter saying they'd like to extend me an offer, which is amazing. Unbelievable. Almost too good to be true. I asked my recruiter if he's sure I don't need to do an on-site, and he said nope - it's rare that this happens so quickly over just a phonecall, but that it's not unheard of. This is my first dev role and honestly I was expecting a few challenges and on-sites, and for this to take weeks not days. Am I getting scammed here? How do I know if this is legit? How much of my personal info should I be giving my recruiter? I'd call the principal company to double check that this is all in their records, but they don't have an HR phone number posted online, so I'm a bit at a loss of what to think. [link] [comments] |
I finally got my first response from an internship I applied for! Posted: 26 Mar 2019 03:03 PM PDT I have applied for about 50 internships so far (yes i know this is low, compared to some people on here), and I have never heard back from any of them. I have even called a few of them to check on my application but none of them answered the phone or returned my call after I left them a voice mail. I applied for 3 internships yesterday, and got an email from one of them today. All the email said is that they wanted me to fill out this questionnaire before I was further considered. I know this isn't much yet, but its the first time I have felt like I wasn't just sending my resume into a black hole, so I'm pretty excited! [link] [comments] |
Any trouble find job after taking a 3 month break or so? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 03:26 PM PDT I am planning to take a break from 3 year job and go overseas for 3+ months or so. Would there be any issues with finding a new job when I return. Would love to hear your experience. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Mar 2019 12:42 PM PDT As the title says, I didn't graduate with a CS degree. I went to school for Game Development, which primarily focused on the art components. Programming was an aspect of it, but took a backburner to the other components--I am largely self-taught. While I am able to get by in the industry (first as a Flash & Unity developer, and currently as a full-stack web dev in ASP.NET C# and Node.js), I am starting to feel the parts of my skillset that are lacking. Notably, things like Algorithms, Data Modelling, and Design Patterns. Of course, I can find a million different books on the subject quite easily, but I was wondering what is generally more favored among them, and what you personally would recommend. Cheers [link] [comments] |
To those whith a job in Data Science or ML, what do you actually do? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 05:55 AM PDT I started a CS degree last fall and I really enjoy it so far, but I'm thinking about switching to a math/CS degree with a specialization in data science. But I don't really know what a data scientist does on a day to day basis. So, what do you do? Do you get to create a lot of new code to implement ML algorithm? Do you think that doing a CS/math degree is worth it to get a way better understanding of statistics? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Accepted internship offer but haven't heard back Posted: 26 Mar 2019 01:06 PM PDT One week ago, I accepted an internship offer with a company via email with an HR Manager. In the email I stated I would accept the offer and also asked a question about some internship logistics. I haven't had a reply yet and I'm worried the HR manager might not have received my email or maybe overlooked it by accident. Of course, I'm aware I might just be paranoid and might have to wait longer for a response. Is it common to not receive any kind of acknowledgement for accepting an offer within a week? How long should I wait before sending a follow-up email? [link] [comments] |
How does someone make a fake startup? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 03:49 PM PDT I'm talking mostly technology. If someone was going to make a fake startup as a form of practice, what steps would they go through to be the most successful? Develop an MVP? Consider routes of deployment? Think about how they would pitch it to investors? To anyone that's made a startup, what steps would you give to anyone that came to you with a generic startup idea, if they planned just to bring the product to fruition for the technical (and possibly imaginary business) experience. Senior engineers outside of Silicon Valley, how was your hiring process? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:33 PM PDT I'm curious to see how many of you had leetcode style questions still outside of Silicon Valley as I know that's pretty much the standard out there even for seniors. How were the system design questions? Were there any topics that employers focused on more than others? Authorization, database, caching, scalability questions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Mar 2019 06:44 AM PDT For me at this point it's a little bit of a pride thing + just wanting to secure myself a little. I know there are jobs out there that won't even bother with me solely because I don't have a degree, which sucks, but I respect it. Then at the same time there's a ton of companies that could care less about a degree. I suppose I can just stick with those companies. I would be able to finish my degree taking night time courses specifically for working professionals at Boston University's MET program. In fact, I'm already accepted in there. Just hesitant to pull the trigger because it's about $22k total and I'm already $45k in loan debt with no degree but a job that pays 6 figures. Also I love my weekend free-time way too much. How to respond to intersting position while not wanting to leave current job at the moment? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 10:59 AM PDT I was recently contacted for a position by the tech lead at a company that I have an interest in. A former coworker recommended me, and the job would be a nice title and pay increase. However, I don't want to leave my current position right now. I am working for a start-up with a very interesting product, and I really want my current company to succeed. Although, we have had a lot of management issues and I could see myself looking for a new job in an amount of months from now, if things go badly. They asked that I speak with them over the phone. I am curious about their company culture, tech stack, and development processes. But I don't want to waste this person's time, or make a bad impression. So, how can I make it clear that I have an interest in the company, and in this person's team, while also making it clear I am not ready to leave my current position right now? Should I tell them before we even talk on the phone that I am not planning on leaving my position soon? [link] [comments] |
How long does it take senior developers to get up to speed? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 08:01 AM PDT I'm a frontend dev with 6 years of experience who recently started a new remote job (3 weeks in). I'm still slow when developing on existing codebases compared to other developers. They use libraries I hadn't used before Flow and Recompose so had to learn those as I work on task. I might not complete all my Jira tasks this sprint and I'm worried I'll be seen as mediocre. As a senior developer, am I expected to be as productive as coworkers who have been at the company for a year or longer within a month of my start date? [link] [comments] |
Question for those in the field and what kind of job you like. Posted: 26 Mar 2019 11:57 AM PDT So I am sort of at a dilemma with what I want and I am trying to not make the wrong choice. My current job is what most people would probably call 'cushy'. I am a Software Developer working on web applications that are owned internally by the company. The owner of the company basically has a view that, as long as the company is making money, and the platforms run smoothly and generate revenue, there is no reason for us to be constantly be working on something. This means that after we have done a sprint (enhancements, bug fixes) there is some down time. I mean there is sometimes a week where I come in, read a book and just hang out at my desk, look at reddit etc. On Fridays I am out of the office by 2pm usually. They provide snacks and breakfast foods in a kitchen which is some nice perks. The downside of this, is I find my self getting content and possibly almost lazy and coworkers are also kind of lazy. The boss is reluctant to newer technologies and its hard to stay up to date on newer things. I am just worried I am getting dummer or rusty. Though I don't know if its bad. This job would be great for someone who is older and possibly content with just doing the regular. I am almost 3 years into my career so I am not ready to settle but I am not sure if I'd be throwing away a great stable job for something not so stable. Right now I am interviewing with a company that seems quite the opposite and seems like a very high pace environment. They are up to speed on cutting edge technology and have a cool office downtown. They work on cool products and do a lot of work for clients instead of work for themselves. Should also mention my current job has 30 employees (7 devs) and the new job has 50 (mostly devs and designers) TTDR: Easy laid back job working on in-house applications or cool high pace job working with clients? Should I take an unrelated job at a large company? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:52 PM PDT I'm an EE but I want to move into software. I have an offer from a FAANG company doing hardware verification which involves a lot of scripting and automation software. Should I take the offer and the large salary for a year, and then move on to a different company for a position more inline with my career goals, or will this pigeon hole me? [link] [comments] |
Seeking advice! Considerations to make in leaving a job prematurely. Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:44 PM PDT Hello /r/csccareerquestions, After searching for related questions, here I have a fair idea of what you all will say on the simpler questions so I'll segregate the two more important questions at the top. First some context: I am a recent CS grad (June 2018) and currently work at FAANG. The offer was great, the team is awesome, and my manager is why I accepted. There is a flaw though, I am a big city person but the team I work for is based in a small town that I went to university in. I am really struggling to have a social life here and want to leave, trust that I have done everything I can. My stock/bonus vests for yr 1 soonish (~5 months) , after worry I'll feel financially trapped for another year over ~%15 of my TC that would be forfeit. As for context on my team, we are located in 3 company hubs around the world. I already communicate with team members over video conference all the time. Also we have a few, notably higher level than I, team members who work remote. Important questions:
Less important questions because I love confirmation. This is assuming Q1 is impossible:
Lastly, I said all of this under the assumption that if I stay at the company I also stay in my team. I recognise it is an option is to move within the company. This is supported by my company but I would rather stay on my team if I stay in the company. Thank you in advance. TLDR: Just read the important questions list. [link] [comments] |
Describe what you do daily at work as if you were explaining it to your grandparents. Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:34 PM PDT I have always had a hard time explaining what I actually do at work to my family. [link] [comments] |
I am not sure what language to learn/focus on Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:30 PM PDT I'm graduating as a Systems Engineer the next year and I am still not sure about what language I like the most. I have been programming with Java during all my career but I just got an internship in which I will use Javascript/AngularJS and will learn C#. I got the offer because I felt like I should explore more languages beyond Java. But is it normal that I am still not sure about what language I preffer? Maybe once I get job experience I will understand. The main reason why I like Java it's because you can get better jobs, easier, since it's always needed. But I also wanted to learn JS/C# in case I wanted to go free-lance or to have a backup technology. Thanks for helping me out... [link] [comments] |
Am I not cut out to be a future software developer? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:28 PM PDT I'm taking AP Computer Science right now, and I'm a solid B-/B student. My math aptitude isn't great; had a C in BC Calculus last semester and will probably get a C again this sem. I can say with certainty that I DO NOT enjoy problem solving in terms of logic puzzles, math problems, etc. However, there were times when I enjoy the feeling of completing a project, but I just feel like no matter how hard I try, or spend my time perfecting my craft, I'll always be a mediocre coder. I'm only interested in doing a CS major because it's a practical way to get into business, entrepreneurship, and the private sector. Even when I don't become a software developer, I might get an analyst job. I plan to get an MBA anyway and go to consulting. Should I stick it out or go major in economics and risk the lesser job prospects as well as debt? (I'd have to come to a more expensive school if I choose econ) [link] [comments] |
1500 euro stipend for internship in Berlin, Germany worth it? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 01:21 PM PDT I have an internship offer in Berlin, Germany at a startup. They're offering 1500 euro monthly and a 1200 euro travel reimbursment. I will have to find housing on my own but they will connect me with an agency that can help. I also have a friend there that can let me sleep on his couch if it comes to it. Is this worth it? I love the idea of being able to travel there to work but the pay seems a bit low, should I try to negotiate? [link] [comments] |
Every job seems to have a different tech stack, should I apply even if I never used it? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 05:20 AM PDT Between languages and frameworks there is an overwhelming amount of jobs where I just don't know it all. I can start learning everything and get a basic understanding but most will be extremely simple one day projects just to get some use of each one. I wouldn't be able to get a full understanding that the job probably requires. Should I apply anyways and what do I say when they ask me questions on the tools they use. [link] [comments] |
Negotiating internship salary with other offers Posted: 26 Mar 2019 07:00 PM PDT Hello! I currently have 2 pending internship offers for the summer - one from Uber and one from Amazon. Amazon pays more, but I also prefer Uber's offer, location, work, etc. Will it be weird if I reach out to Uber's recruiter and negotiate my hourly rate? I do have a third offer on the table that pays much less but is a great offer nevertheless, if that makes any difference. Also, during my phone call with Uber's recruiter, she did ask me if compensation was a factor in my decision between offers. I'm not entirely sure if that's a hint at negotiation. Before some replies, I'd like to point out that yes, this is an internship, and I'm aware interns generally shouldn't negotiate salary. I just want to know if I'm in a distinct position to do so. I'd love to know your guys' thoughts. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Mar 2019 11:24 AM PDT Why do companies wait weeks to schedule next interview? Is it because they spend their time interviewing others or because they forget to write reviews? What's the usual case? [link] [comments] |
Getting a software engineering job with a physics degree? Posted: 26 Mar 2019 06:53 PM PDT I'm a student at UW Seattle who will be majoring in physics instead of CS because I have so many credits that I have to declare a major now to lift a registration hold and won't be able to apply to the CS major this Summer. Will I be able to make it past resume screens with an applied physics degree? I'll probably pursue a minor in Informatics and will take as many CS non-majors courses as possible, so I'll still be taking relevant classes, but I won't be getting a degree in CS or anything directly CS-related. What advice to you have for a non-cs major who intends to become a software engineer? What should I do to make myself competitive for software development jobs upon graduation? I have two web development internships under my belt. What else can I do? Seek out a CS-related research position? Join CS clubs? Work on personal projects and post them to github? Grind leetcode? Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Mar 2019 06:24 PM PDT Hi! New to this sub. I'm a senior in HS planning on studying CS paired with Biomedical Engineering/Neuroscience at university, and have been fortunate enough to have been accepted to a few prestigious universities. I'm still waiting on decisions for the majority of my schools, but here are my options so far, and how I regard them. My overall goal is to launch a startup in LA, NYC, or SF focused on healthcare/biomimetics tech. The universities I've been accepted to so far that I'm considering are: -Duke -Cornell -UCLA -USC I'm most interested in attending university as a launchpad to entrepreneurial pursuits; I'm looking for a university with a strong support structure for such activities. I'm also looking for a strong CS/engineering program, ideally conducting interdisciplinary research. Ideally the college has courses that are project-based, and focus on developing products or even potential business proposals (ie 'startup' class at Stanford). Obviously, I want to have fun at university too, and am a sucker for good weather. Of course, I'm interested in the tech recruiting from each of these universities. Does anyone have unique insights as to the entrepreneurial climate at all of these universities? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
